That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. My list of dolly turns-off is quite short really, there's not a lot I don't like! For bodies tho I personally don't like the female bodies that has very big boobs and/or tiny waists and very large hips. I'm also not a fan of very manly/muscular boy bodies.

For faces I sort of like a bit of everything... except for faces that are 100% symmetric >< I find that as soon as a dolls face is completely symmetric it starts to look...lifeless? I can't seem to bond with dolls that have 'perfect' symmetric faces for some reason :/

    2. Hour-glass figures on girl bodies (the Volks SD 16 girl body for instance). Huge out of proportion eyes (which usually can be fixed by getting eyes w/smaller pupils but not always). Weird shaped heads. My 2 Angel Studio guys are fabulous as long as I keep their wigs on, but they have such huge egg-shaped heads! Volks has over-sized heads & eyes in a lot of their dolls as well (thank goodness for my pocket book & nerves). Their Williams sculpt has the opposite problem head-wise - face looks too big for that head, looks squashed somehow (not really noticeable w/a wig on).
The really overly skinny dolls (Doll Chateau, some of the DollZones) w/strange joints - just not me at all.

    3. Dolls are without eyes (sleeping dolls), with articulated fingers ( I don't like view of their hands).

    4. Hmmmmm... Sorry, but anthropomorphic dolls. Except mermaids, I just don't like that.

    5. This is a neat thread! It was interesting to read what everyone dislikes in a doll. I am a bit picky so I have quite a few. Based on my personal tastes:
      • Puckered lips, pouty lips, and anything that resembles a duck's face. Just… no. It feels like they are trying too hard to be cute. Depending on the sculpt, the head might even look a bit dimwitted.
      • Too big of a bust. I don’t want a doll that looks like she visited a plastic surgeon. A completely flat chest isn’t the best either.
      • Dolls that look like a young child or chubby baby. Not my thing.
      • Poor proportions. If the head is too small or large it feels so off. Gigantic eyes do not appeal to me either. I definitely do not like a baby face paired with a body that looks like it frequents the gym, and vice versa. I like it when a doll feels “whole” because the body and head work so well together.
      • Lanky bodies. This mainly applies to male dolls for me. I like some muscle definition.
      • Open mouth/teeth. If the mouth is barely open, I might consider it if the sculpt is nicely done. Otherwise, I can’t seem to bring myself to like it.
      • Large nose and/or lips. It bugs me and I usually notice it every time.
      • Super curvy and voluptuous female bodies. I cannot relate to this body type because I am petite in real life. Lack of curves aren't my favorite either. I really dislike fridge waists and straight body lines.
      • Very round facial features, especially the eyes. I prefer for eyes to have a more almond shape. Faces with more sharp features appeal to me.
      • Legs that are completely lacking in shape. They have zero appeal to me.
      • Giraffe necks. Some long necks are nice and remind me of models, but I do not like the ones that look like they have been stretched too much in Photoshop.
      • Smiling/grinning faces. I find them somewhat odd. Neutral or sleepy expressions are my preference.
      • Nipples that show through clothes. It is just an inconvenience.
      • Lackluster profile. Sometimes I think a head sculpt looks really nice until I see it from the side.
      • Lack of detail in the body. I like a nice hand sculpt!
      • Tattoos. I find it tacky.
      • Extremely masculine male faces.
      • Extremely wide-set or close-set eyes.
      • Facial hair.
Well, that list definitely isn’t short. :sweat I wonder how things will change a year or two from now!

    6. Boobs that are way too big.
And the noses that are way yoo pointy..

    7. My turn offs for dolls would be large to comically large breasts, white or fantasy colored resin, and inexpressive hands with super-straight fingers or fists

    8. I think one of the things I'm most picky about is bodies. I get unreasonably mad when a body has zero detail and the legs are just straight tubes with no definition and the hands are forever in some boring pose. Also, I hate looking at male dolls that have a ton of muscles. That's just my preference though, I understand the appeal!

    9. I don't like really, really thin dolls, even if they're stylised like Doll Chateau. I'm just not a fan of the aesthetic. I also don't like male dolls with very plump lips. XD

I'm also really not keen on the stylised kids with really wide noses and tiny eyes.

    10. I suppose, that I don't like dolls where the resin that neighbours the joints isn't fluidly tapered. I even prefer heel legs because of this.

    11. I believe mine would be huge breasts that are raised high up and squished together to make that cleavage. I'm more of the smaller to medium breasts that fall naturally

    12. Yosd noses! It's very hard to find noses that I really like on yosd dolls in particular, for some reason. On bigger dolls I like almost all noses I've seen, but on yosds, many companies will either make them too snout-like, or too lumpy, or too prominent, or etc, for my taste somehow.

I'd also say bulging cheeks! To me, it looks like the cheeks are heavy lumps on the face, like orbs, which round inward, and they make the chin jut out. I think they're trying to replicate how babies look, but babies look cuter (in my opinion, haha). I think mostly only yosd sculpts do this.

I'd never say anything to someone who likes these qualities in their dolls, of course; but when it comes to me picking out dolls, these are what get me the most.

    13. The one turn off? Super full pouty lips.

    14. Hands with moving fingers. I really palms of these dolls. Yes, moulded hands are not so universal, but I can`t see it ((.
P.S. Very big boobs I don`t like too.

    15. Unrealistic chest proportions have already been brought up so much; actually, I'm surprised that, given how much it's been mentioned, most of the bodies I see still haven't tried to fix that...issue.

Other things that I personally find to be a turn off:

      - Eyes too widely set apart on the face and/or too big
      - The tiniest mouth, usually with the most exaggerated M shape
      - Bodies without much definition/detail in the sculpt
      - Bodies that aren't anatomically proportioned, and in an unappealing way
      - Mouths that look closed, but from certain angles are revealed to show teeth
      - Sculpts that go with a mature body, but the sculpts themselves look like 8 year olds, or actual babies

    16. I really don’t like sad faces or unnatural proportions...

    17. My biggest doll pet peeve is when dolls have beautiful face-ups, but then the eyes look 'off'' in they dolls head. I don't know how to explain it, but doll eyes, to me, can make or break the doll's look!

    18. I saw a sculpt that looked like a male character of mine who I am desperate to shell. He was perfect - the face shape, nose, slightly furrowed brow, slightly closed eyes... but he had a cleft chin and I can't stand them. Would have 100% bought that head if not for that issue.

The other thing I really can't abide by is giant boobs. My female characters are few, but they're all small-chested and genuine small chests can be hard to come by. I ordered my girls with the smaller bust option but they're still bigger than I'd have liked. One of them is supposed to be almost flat-chested but I couldn't find any affordable bodies with chests that small so I had to go with a 21cm bust on a 60cm doll.

    19. Dolls with a lot of their teeth showing. I'm fine if it's just a barely open mouth or fangs but if there are too many teeth showing it makes me shudder.

    20. One very specific thing is: eyes that are too wide for the face. I don't mean wide-open, or set wide apart, but like horizontally stretched too wide. Especially if they're paired with too-small noses and/or mouths. Baby faces are fine, with their big doe eyes and little snub noses and rosebud lips, but what looks like an adult face where someone just cranked the sliders all the way up on the eyes and all the way down on the nose and mouth? Nah. That's why a lot of MiniFees are really unattractive to me.

When proportions are just "off," that's really hard for me to get past also, like if the lips are too high or low on the face or the shoulders are too wide for the hips. Same for bodies with overly simplistic sculpting (like ones with tube-like limbs or flat torsos) or inconsistent details (like sharply bulging veins in random spots).

Finally, horror-themed dolls. I'm perfectly fine with gothic style or some monstrous features, but not the ones with evil-looking things coming out of their eyeballs or their "flesh" rotting away or snarling mouths full of needle teeth. To each their own and all that, but personally I can't imagine getting enjoyment from having mutilated murder-demons hanging out on my bookshelf. *shrug*
