That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. For me, it's when dolls have open mouths. A little teeth is ok, like the Unoa Lusis is adorable to me. But when dolls have very open mouths it's just not my preference. Also, when dolls are sculpted to look permanently sad. I have found some that are so lovely! But they are sculpted that they can't look anything but sad, and I find it a little limiting artistically. Last thing is unnatural looking breasts. When they look like they'd be someone who, in real life, has had implants, it's not my preference. Bigger is fine, but personally, when they are very round all around/squished together/very very large in a way that is unnatural looking I don't prefer it.

    2. Male dolls who have a 10 year old face in a grown-looking body (even if it's not muscular). I've seen a lot of companies do this and I just dislike it a lot. Looks uncanny.

    3. Thick ankles… I know it’s weird, but some sculpts have really bulbous ankles and I just don’t like it. Sharp pointy faces are also a bit of a no for me.

    4. Some people say bobble heads but I say tiny heads. I can’t remember the company or doll but it looked like the head belonged on a 1/8 or yosd body but it was on an msd body.

    5. Sculpted on "facial expressions" - specifically like the ones from FL. There's something so off-putting to the faces that have this (looking at you Iset and Lami). I don't really know why, because their more neutral faces, or faces with a slight smile are gorgeous

    6. This actually reminded me of something I won't consider a deal-breaker per se, but is something I find rather obnoxious—ankles/wrists that are curved near the joint area. A mild curve is fine—it's those ones with the pieces jutting outwards that reduce poseability that really irk me. Besides poseability issues, it makes those areas more fragile against tight stringing in a way a more straight wrist/ankle region wouldn't be burdened with.

    7. I don't like dolls that have huge unnatural looking chest, hands that are not that detailed, extremely large eyes or anime features like a nose that looks non-existent. If the doll has somme features i dislike though it doesn't always stop me from buying the doll if overall I like most things about the doll. I saw a male bjd that looked super muscular in an unnatural way I didn't like that.

I don't like dolls that have a child face, but a grown up body. Is it a young looking baby-like adult or a child with a grown up body? If it's a child with a grown up body that's too disturbing for me. Those chunky hands for those smaller dolls look somehow unpleasant.

I saw a doll on Instagram that had a chest that looked sort of like two large watermelons on her chest on a thin body. That is something I wouldn't personally buy. It's not a doll for me.

    8. The greatest turn-off for me is when a male doll is just so muscular that his head looks super small compared to his body.
For female dolls, I'm also repulsed by big boobs taht look fake. But if a doll has a big chest but is also, for example, chubby, and her chest looks realistic, it doesn't bother me.

    9. I am not a fan of grey skin, or super pouty lips. The grey skin is something that I think could look good given the faceup, styling, etc., but I have not seen any doll I like with it yet.

    10. I’m not a big fan of YOSDs, I have one of them that I really like, he’s got the basic YOSD face though. They all have that standard baby doll look with that same expression. It’s fine, nothing actually wrong with it, but boring.

A thing that genuinely squicks me out though is strongly sculpted expressions. Like the big smiles that actually open the mouth and wrinkles the cheeks are pure nightmare fuel for me.

    11. I find that sculpts which look too much like a human being are weird. I admire the art in it, but...a doll need to have a "doll aspect" and not to be fully like a human...them dolls are strange (but beautiful)

    12. Hm.
I don't like the extremely muscular dolls with body- and/or facial hair.
No matter the quality or rarity of the doll, I would not be interested. On the other side of the spectrum, I permanently don't like anything in the 1/6 size and below. They just look too toy-like and have the tendency to be too young-looking.

    13. Usually the size of the doll determines whether I'll be interested in it or not. I've learned that I'm more into 1/3 scale than 1/4 scale, so when I see a doll I like and its MSD 1/4 sized I pass on it. Also the price of a doll can be a turnoff to me as well, not necessarily anything wrong with the sculpt itself.

    14. I’m not fond of dolls with broad shoulders and narrow hips. They feel unbalanced. Also sculpted human teeth. I’ve never liked the way teeth look in drawings either.

    15. Different colour skins on human bodies ( like green/blue/purple)
Those dolls with oversized body proportions eg lips like bratz dolls
      Like pear shape dolls?
      And like teeth too
I do have some dolls I admire with these features actually but in general I wouldn’t really buy them so

    16. Heads with very smug faces. They just annoy me I guess

    17. Oddly shaped lips that are way too big. I love full lips on a doll but some look like they overdid it with the lip filler. Like two sausages pressed together.

    18. Oh! faces and special genital parts will always be ?? to me, like I just don't get it.

Also dolls that are super muscular and then they have a tiny pea head lmao, I'd rather my doll have a big ol' noggin' bobblehead effect if I had to have bad proportions.

Sometimes magnetic parts annoy me, like not everything needs to be magnetic, enough already...

    19. Tig ol bitties in general, open mouths or "kissy" faces, impaired arm and leg movement (especially in the knees)

      • x 1
    20. Weirdly long, spindly necks.
On some dolls it is stylized a lot and isn't so bad, but I've seen some dolls that otherwise have realistic proportions, but have a giraffe neck.

Also, my other big one is male dolls with super wide shoulders, to the point it makes their head look tiny
