That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. It's so funny to look at everyone's turn-offs and see dozens people say they hate something that I like or even prefer in a doll. I guess it goes to show how varied the doll hobby is hahaha!

In any case, if the body doesn't pose well, it's hard for me to bond with any doll, even one I think is perfectly cute. I guess I just really value posing, it makes my doll feel more alive to me.

    2. Too small feet on big boys, too long legs on any doll, unnaturally posed hands... I'm thinking... No, those are the most important. :wiggle Found another one: small heads on gigantic bodies. I guess good proportions are important to me.

    3. Just came up with a new one: the newer trend of realistic proportioned bjds that are in actuality quite pin-headed. Impl's newer heads have been especially prone to this. I took life drawing classes, and human heads are not that small (with a few exceptions).

    4. My tastes have completely changed since I entered the doll hobby back in 2016. I first said I'd never own a doll over $200, then I'd never own a doll over $700, never own a resin...you get the picture. I still, however, do not like super skinny dolls, toothy dolls (depending on the face because two of my girls are vampires), and I'm not into plus sized dolls or dolls with huge thighs and boobs. I know there is a general want for dolls of different body sizes and I totally understand that. Coming from someone plus sized, the last thing I'd want to own is a doll that looks like me. My dolls are facets of what I want to be and can't.

    5. My biggest turn-offs are weird hands and feet. I own an old DZ body with weird toes that I somehow have learned to live with but when the hands look like there are no bones inside then that's a pass from me, no matter how pretty the body. I also steer clear of torsos that are too long - it just looks weird to me, exaggerating proportions in the wrong place imo (not every top has to be a crop top, thank you!).

    6. Sculptured strong face expressions, like winking or raising eyebrows, I don't know why. Recently, I saw a doll on second hand marked and I liked it,he had stunning faceup and body blush, but his ears pierced, like, someone drilled the holes in the resin. Pain :( I would have considering buying it otherwise, I understand some people like it, a pity it bothers me for no reason at all...Especially funny cause irl my ears pierced too :XD:

    7. I don't like the pin headed dudes with the massive bodies either, even though that seems to be the style now. Maybe I'm just resentful that the huge dudes made the 62-65cm boys clothing market dry up so much.

Other than that: neck joints (weirds me out), cankles, joints that click when you move an arm/leg, legs that lock in place (either sitting or standing), gore mods (this is my weak stomach, they can be very artistic), spider/insect legs on things, eyes where I am not expecting eyes (weak stomach again), legs that are too too long, necks that are too too long, and that thing they do with the knee where it has it's own piece and you can see joint lines above and below (I realize this makes great mobility, but I don't like the look).

I used to think I hated visible teeth but somehow I keep ending up with dolls that have them so I guess that wasn't true!

    8. This! I came back to the hobby after a long while to see these gorgeous angelic faces on these hulking bodies, and to me it’s just kinda goofy. It’s not a big deal, bc I’ll just hybrid any head I really want…but sometimes I miss having full sets.

    9. the way most boobs, especially large ones, look on most msd size bodies i've seen bugs me... idk many of them seem a bit too unnatural looking for my taste. but i generally prefer boy dolls, so that's not really a huge issue for me!

and teeth, especially defined teeth D: i just really do not like it. i do like expressive dolls, but teeth are usually a dealbreaker for me. i've seen a few dolls with just a bare hint of teeth that i've liked okay, but for the most part... teeth = absolutely no thank you!

and super realistic looking or hyper-defined dolls in general, i'd have to say, are not my thing. whether they are just very realistic in the face, or if they have like crazy muscles or something similar (even if it's stylized), i'm probably gonna pass on it. i prefer a softer and somewhat more stylized look.

    10. Pin heads on 65cm and taller dolls.
My collection is mostly Volks, so any new dolls have to fit with my existing crew. My Loongsoul Cang Jue is bordering on pinhead with his wide shoulders and big old yaoi hands.
It does help me save money though! I can see the most beautiful head sculpt, but if the circumference is less than 22cm, it's not for me

    11. Too big breasts. Too long and skinny shins. Pear bodies. Anime faces. Unrealistic body details. Unnatural posing. Pin heads of cute little boys on giant bodybuilder bodies. Silly faces. Too expressive faces. Breasts that look like the law of gravity doesn't apply to them. Dolls that look like they stepped out of a comic book. A bland beauties... Interchangeable faces... It's not enough for me if the doll is beautiful. It has to have a soul.

    12. My biggest turn off is lack of texture. I’ve seen some lovely dolls but the lack of any muscle sculpture or flow built into the doll kills me every time.
I’m also not fond of locking joints. Not entirely certain why.

    13. Really sweet, young looking female dolls. Especially with the small mouths. Chubby MSDs. Duck lips haha. Just not my cuppa!

    14. Very expressive face, especially a tongue hanging out. Or l would want another head with more neutral expression. I mean nobody walks around the whole day like a panting dog. Kids or toddlers with a mouth so small that it looks like they don’t have any at all. Eyes that remind of the trivia fact that ostrich has more eyes in the head than brain.

    15. Asymmetrical face with lots of space between eyes. Very big hips & chest 1/4 of that. Open mouth dolls.

    16. and when you google it: "usually a symptom of a birth defect or genetic disorder". Only good for Avatar blue creatures, not for humans.

    17. I want to apologize - for joking that I want to fight (heavens, it's just dolls), but also... now I totally agree with you. Funny how much your tastes can change, eh? Now, I love sculpted knee caps and seek them out when looking to purchase new dolls.

I love all of the new taller girl sculpts that are coming out, but man, the laffy taffy legs are driving me crazy. What I mean by that is, some companies make the dolls taller by streeeeettttcccchhhhing out the legs so that they are super long and skinny - like the calves are made of laffy taffy or something.

Another thing that really frustrates me (as someone else mentioned) is a lack of sculpting detail. Legs and arms that are just tubes, or backs with no shoulder blades - especially on more expensive dolls. If I'm dropping $500 and up, I want some detail, please!

    18. Pointed ears on “human” dolls, maybe someday I might like it, but I really don’t right now! I love vampire-esqe dolls but I just can’t get one with pointed ears, they feel like fairy dolls and those just don’t fit my vibe. I also don’t like mouths too close to the nose, I saw one doll like that and I just, couldn’t make myself like it. I also am not a fan of flat chins, I at least need a bit of a shape, it feels like a square without it, but honestly flat chins is lowest on my list of doll turn-offs

    19. - big lips. Seriously, why? I know they look cool and whatever but sometimes they take up half of the face. :/
      - overly long elf ears. I know they have to stick out but I want some ears that look like Vulcan ears, just a tad bit.
      - humungous eyes. I get that the eyes are the mirror of the soul but sometimes they are just too big.
      - heads that are just too big for the body (looking at you, Dragon Doll)
      - lack of sleepy, half closed eyes versions. For 20 dolls there sometimes is just one of this variety.
      - teeth. I just don't like them. But when I draw characters yes, I do a slightly open mouth with teeth, but with dolls - please keep it closed.
      - three part torsos. I have an Island doll and it's frustrating. T_T I know it's for better posability but I don't need it - I need a nice two part torso.
      - resin itself as a material used. It's heavy, usually yellows so what's the point of getting any other shade than yellow and is heavy and fragile :/ I picked up my girl today - cheesus, she's heavy, and she's only 1/3 :/

    20. For me, it's the dolls with tongues and defined teeth. It's just not my cup of tea. That and dolls that have ribs showing.
