That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Now I know it's probably slightly more realistic but for some reason the neck size bothers me on most dolls (especially the 60cm+ boys). Some of them are practically the exact same width as the heads and it just looks so... off. I don't want them to look full bobble head but I definitely prefer a slender neck look to that stocky body builder type.

    2. I am not insanely picky when it comes to dolls, but I do have styles and types of dolls that I prefer. I am not big on male dolls because they aren't my style, but I agree with the person who said that the way male bodies are made is weird, unrealistic, and the proportions are strange. When it comes to girl or androgynous dolls I'm not too fond of really insanely proportionate ones like Angel Philia dolls. I don't love it when the whole style of the doll is that they are supposed to be sexy. Angel Philia dolls just have everything that I dislike in a doll style-wise, even though I know they aren't resin dolls they are just the best example that comes to mind for me. I have a Mayfair sweet and that one doesn't bother me because the weirdness of the body has a reason at least, and Pasha Pasha, Popovys, and those kinds of dolls are always in skimpy outfits because they want to show off the sculpting, so they have reasons.

I find that I do get put off by bodies that have single jointing and try my best to look for double-jointed bodies, but if I like the head I would just get it by itself and find a body that fits it with good jointing.

    3. - and yet somehow they are becoming popular or at least experimented with by companies :D As for the ribs - if they are slightly defined - I actually like it, gives a bit more realistic look. :)

    4. It's so interesting how everyone's tastes are so different! :) I think that makes the hobby more interesting.

    5. Lack of posability! If a doll body doesn't have double jointes that's an immediate no for me, but when looking at bodies I'm always going to go for one with a 3 joint torso over a 2 joint one. Thigh joints too. I got my first hybrid because while the original body was beautiful, the mobility was so limited, being both single jointed and lacking a thigh joint for the price. Other than that, super ripped (male) bodies in the SD+ scale aren't super interesting to me and I wish softer-looking bodies were more common.

For head sculpts, extremely doll-like features are a big turndown. Huge eyes, tiny noses, round face, there's just not much personality in them for me. Beyond that I'm not a big fan of smiling or open mouths. Unless it's an alternative to a more neutral expression, I don't want to be locked in to something extreme, mainly because I don't want to be limited when it comes to photographing them.

    6. That's a new thing, the bigger thighs and I'm seeing it a lot usually described as "pear shaped" dolls. In a way it's not a bad thing but it does make dressing them a bit challenging. So far only one of my minis has that and she wears a looser dress. I think it started in the small fashion dolls and is now making it's way into other dolls including BJDs. It's a step towards inclusivity, trying to give people dolls that might look more like them? The other thing is now I'm seeing a few very muscular girls, like girls who do a lot of gym.

For me any Anime looking doll or kid like dolls, especially with teeth, I am not a fan...

    7. This! This so much! A surprising amount of pet dolls even lack any leg joints aside from the connections to the body, that and no joint at the ankle! And lots of regular dolls have completely unposeable tails too. Ugh, I’ve been spoiled by the giant dragons!!

    8. It's not exactly a new thing. I remember when the original Leekeworld Art Body came out and that's quite some time ago (2010 or something?). It was probably the first exaggerated pear shaped BJD body, at least the first well known one. I didn't get it at all at the time, until I saw one in person and it was actually adorable. I believe they made an even more extreme one a few years later? I could remember that wrong, though.
With that said, there certainly has been a bit of a new wave of them over the last five years or so, especcially among smaller artists.

    9. My #1 is underbust cuts in the body. I don't like them. I think they look wrong when the joint is engaged. I'd rather have a proper chest cut even if it's visible but it's getting more and more rare.

Single joints are a deal-breaker too. I want mobility and natural posing in dolls.

    10. After getting a 65cm female dorrie, her foot is the major turn off. It's a nightmare to find women shoes that would fit her 8.1 - 8.2 cm size. >.<'''

    11. I tend to do for more "natural" looking or sort of realistic dolls so a big turn off would be things that are super unrealistic. So I tend to stay away from dolls with really fake looking boobs or comically big boobs or unrealistic body proportions even though that's really kind of hard. I'm not into gore or scarring although I think it is artistic and cool with other people's dolls. I'm not into tattoos but still think it's cool for other people's dolls. I don't like it if a doll looks too sad as I think to myself, "Who hurt you?" and it would bother me that they are forever in a sad state. Although from an artistic standpoint I like the look of more fantasy dolls (vampire, centaurs, mermaids, animal or mythical creature hybrids, etc), it's not for me but I can still appreciate them and even admire them. Oh! And childlike faces on overly sexualized adult bodies. That bothers me.

For me to even consider purchasing a doll, the doll must: have a face-up, have eyes, have a wig, fullset clothing, and shoes. I'm not interested in learning face-ups and I don't have the talent for sewing clothing, so I prefer to have a doll ready to go. If it's like a standard doll that has a face-up option, even random eyes, and either a random wig or I know what sized wig, shoes, and clothes to go for, I'm fine with that too. But I'm old and tired and need to take time to save up money. Hahaha. The least amount of effort for a doll purchase is the best for me.

    12. I thought of another one , that I just noticed on some doll photos recently: wrongly-placed ears, that sit way too low on the face, compared to nose and eye-sockets. Almost like they are melting and sliding downwards. Throws off the whole face sculpt, to me.

    13. Although 8,2x3=24,6 and 65x3=195. For a woman that tall feet would be somewhere in the range of 27 (+/-) or more, so the doll should have around 9 cm feet. Obviously doesn’t help to find shoes for her.

    14. - which is weird, because, ekhm, it's a doll. I know Reborn dolls look very lifelike but it's rather an exception than the rule. Theye ven started to making Monster high with curvy body as if dolls were responsible for dysmorphia. In my whole life I never wanted to look like a Barbie or a bjd, so it's really crazy for me. :/

      - yup! A lot of 1/4 dolls' faces belong to 1/6 category, totally agree. I think Volks is especially guilty of this, since their 1/3 (teenage dolls) have very childish faces.:/ But I am still sucker for their Kun model and it's a foregone wish because it's no longer available :(

      - wow. I don't mind a naked doll but the face-up is a must, like with you becasue I am not there yet with it. Sewing? yes, much closer and I really enjoy it. Additionally there are really no clothes that I would like for my doll (either too elaborate or not in the style I want - decora style? Nope. Industrial lolita? Also nope. Street wear? Yeah, more or less so, but still not exactly what I'm looking for except for pants/trousers. And don't get me started on shoes. :/

And I've notices how many people here don't like pronounced teeth and yet so_many_dolls_have_them. Why, companies, why?

Luckily sometimes teeth are marked by the make up, but still, it's a bit of a struggle to cover them nicely with paint and secure them with varnish. :/

And half opened mouth - doesn't show teeth but it's like the doll is eternally gasping for air - it makes me a bit uncomfortable,

    15. Got another one:

Companies listing dolls that are sold out on their site and... no other dolls. Why, though? Where's the sense in that apart from identification help? :/ Why not keep it neatly under: Sold out items? It infuriates me to no end, when I click: 1/3 size and tadaa! sold out, sold out, sold out... ALL sold out. Why do it, though? :/

    16. I'm okay with that for sellers like Foveo, where they open for a limited time and theme a sell every month. One month might be the seasonal dolls, another wigs, another all unlimited dolls, etc.

My newest thing that's a turn off is when the artist stretches a face (forehead/chin) to fit the frame of 75cm doll, and once you pose him past portrait, you see that the width of the face is the same or lesser than the width of the neck.
And, this is not even "We tried to increase the size of a head for a 68cm body to fit a 75cm body, but now it might fit a 69-70cm body for a 75cm body" category.

    17. - oh yes! I've noticed the same with male dolls. It wouldn't bother me if it was like Iple House does - all of their dolls have more or less human proportions, but to do this with dolls with less human proportions feels weird.

And I don't like... trends. Now the trend is full lips, big eyes and aesthetics of porcelain/antique dolls. Many companies do so and I don't mind as much but I really miss the variety of styles and molds. :/ Not to mention that molds became so generic I easily confuse one company with other (Loonng Sould with Ring Doll for example - they are both fantastic companies and I love their dolls it's just they a tad bit similar to each other). I don't know, maybe it's just me :/

    18. Companies using AI generated images to create promo materials.

As an illustrator it's a slap in the face. So you don't want us to buy recasts because the recasters are stealing your IP and labour without compensation (which I totally support, btw!) but now you're chill with just using tech bro products that steal other artists' IP and labour (and in the case of disabled artists like me, literal physical pain) because you can't be bothered to shell out a couple hundred bucks for a promo illustration from a human artist? GTFO.

    19. @Lelite I made the same parallel back a while ago. I think I've detested few things as much as AI.
Good grief, this is so annoying! I understand that showing sold-out dolls can get people interested in future things, but give me a filter please!

    20. I think I have a lot of turnoffs, but many of them are related to dolls I don't really collect (like unrealistically MASSIVE and PERKY breasts on female dolls) but the one thing that makes me the most upset is a beautiful lithe boy body..... but then he has a pack of hawaiian rolls on his abdomen :vein
