That one turn-off

Aug 2, 2012

    1. Well, this. I'm in complete agreement!! Maybe a poll is in sight? I seem to see a lot of things recurring, and maybe if there were one, the results would be more condensed ^ ^

    2. turn off: SINGLE JOINTED. why spend that much money if they can't move like Shakira?

    3. I Think I have quite a list.
-White Skinned Dolls. I personally own two White Skinned dolls, and one (Dollzone Wing Elf) has yellowed to a beautiful cream color. However, my Minifee Shiwoo sometimes looks ghostly with his paper white resin. It's like, if I want him to have a darker face up (which he does), he looks way too Gothic. If I want him to have a lighter face up, he looks washed out and sickly. There's virtually no middle ground.
-Rushed Vampire Faces. Ok, so everyone wants a doll with vampire teeth, or has had one with vampire teeth. I personally cannot stand the dolls with teeth that look like they've been glued to the dolls face as an afterthought. "Oh, we might not sell this doll as well as our others, let's glue unrealistically large teeth to his face!" They just look gross.
-Anorexic looking bodies. I'm not sure how this trend started (possibly with more people dressing their male dolls in female clothing?) I understand that with some characters you need small frail looking bodies, but I feel like more and more companies are coming up with these anorexic unhealthy bodies. Personally, if I saw someone that skinny walking down the street, I'd be tempted to take them out for McDonalds or something.
-Buggy Doll Eyes. Usually this is human error, but it's still something that turns me away from certain sculpts. Ever go on the Gallery page and click a thread only to see 0.0 staring at you? It's the bug eyes, like the eyes weren't positioned correctly so now this doll is forever eating into your soul. It really turns me off of some pretty dollies, just because it gives me the creeps!

    4. I concur on too skinny (unless there are artistic reasons, and it's well done... otherwise, eh) and buggy eyes! Eek.

-Falling into the "too skinny" category, sort of, is when the head is too obviously out of proportion to the body. I've seen so many dolls with such skinny shoulders that they look like bobbleheads. And I have to say that I appreciate a nice, realistic body.
-The boob thing for me too. D: I understand why it could be popular, but the cartoonish look of a lot of doll breasts really turns me off, which is why I usually love small-breasted dolls (the temptation to make the breasts mysteriously spherical and caricaturesque must go away somewhat with small breasts?)
-HUGE eyes. I like big eyes as much as the next person, but HUGE anime-like eyes I never could get into. Weirdly, they creep me out in daylight far, far more than a realistic doll staring at me from my desktop at midnight ever will.
-Hands with weird positions. My first doll was a Luts/CP Lishe, and one of her default hands was a fist with just her pinky sticking out, and I looked at it for ages, couldn't for the life of me understand why she couldn't have just had a normal relaxed hand, and proceeded to hide it in every photo of her I ever took. I guess I'd avoid any body attributes that aren't useful for all purposes when buying (closed eyes, vampire teeth, elf ears... things I can love on other people's dolls, not really on my own), but I just remember the hands that bothered me for years.

    5. can't say anything about ugly boobs, because I only own one female doll which I got second hand and her previous owner reduced hers so that they'll look very natural. :3

But I don't like it when the size of the doll doesn't fit with the planned character. (for example I loved the old slim Supia Body but then I found out it was bigger than my Daphne's Angel of Dream body.)

I rather liked the art body and Mikhaila, but I didn't like the controversy about whether Leeke stole the design or not. :/

I don't like too big heads either. I prefer 8-9 inch heads or smaller.

Another turn-off: when the dolls are very expensive and the company doesn't offer layaway -> not cool.

and the last one is probably stupid but I don't like it when I cannot make a decision about whether I want a doll with or without face-up and I end up thinking and brooding... that's probably my biggest turn off besides the size.
I think buying a (luxury) doll should be a light, cheerful action. ^^

    6. Probably my biggest turn off is when I can't see the doll in the nude without face up..I remember hearing in the beginning of the hobby don't choose a doll because you like the eyes it has in the picture or it's face up or the wig or clothes because you might not be able to get it exactly like that. I like getting a chance to look at the head really look at it, the body, the posabillity owner pictures the whole shebang. Probably what turns me off a company more is if they don't have those types of picture's up specifically if I can't see the body. How am I gonna know if I like the thing if I can't see the body?

The head I can deal with but if I HATE how the body looks then forget it.

EDIT: Another is if I'm looking at an elf eared doll there's a certain style of ear I prefer. I don't like super super long elf ears because I am terrified I'll buy one and the head will arrive with a broken or chipped ear.

    7. Pet peeves about other people's dolls? I don't usually stop to think about it, because looking for things to be annoyed about is like picking a psychic scab. Entertaining for a bit, but ultimately poitless, and will probably leave an ugly mark.

But, let's see, offhand.... putting beards on prettyboy faces (unintentional dragking look)... big black studded J-rock platform boots worn with, like, Bermuda shorts and a white hoodie (those boots are cheap so you see em misused a lot)... and doll sculpts that have way too much chin (I get that it imitates manhwa & other comic styles, but in 3D doll form it bothers hell out of me).

I agree with this-- makes me roll my eyes every time I hear someone complain about young faces with muscular bodies on grounds of 'reality'. In reality, I have known plenty of baby-faced musclemen: college athletes who get musclebound before they lose their babyfat, highschool jocks who bloom earlier than the other boys, and some grownups who just have really boyish faces & don't wear beards. Cuteness may be considered a liability on macho men, but this doesn't change the fact that there is a lot of beefy youth out there. Perhaps it's all the hormones in the McDonald's, who knows. :D

My 15-year-old godchild just joined his school wrestling team, and he's got his woobie freshman face & a big square sturdy body like an Iplehouse JID. ^^ Minus the idealized sculptural details, of course, but still a burly chibi.

(But I also agree that those Minifees, in particular, are a bit intense. A strong build is one thing, but those guys are crazy. ;; Who's been spiking those kids' milk & cookies with amphetamine-and-steroid cocktails?)

    8. You guys are awesome :XD:

Let's see, I'm kinda picky about my dolls and doll bodies....

      - Noodle limbs. Limbs that look like a tube that's been hacked into pieces, had joints slapped on and has virtually no definition. Noodle bodies are also out. Curves are sexy!

      - 'Plate' joints. Joints that only look good when your doll is standing/laying poker straight. This includes limbs and torsos. I can't see the appeal. Unfortunately, this seems to be becoming a trend. :sigh

      - Torsos with very limited posing abilities. Like underbust joint only bodies. It usually ends up looking like the doll has a rod shoved up their derrière most of the time. Human bodies just don't work that way; There's something called a 'spine'.

      - Unnatural /saggy boobs. Boobs that look like they've been pasted on by someone who only has a basic grasp of female anatomy. Saggy boobs, because, let's face it. Unless your doll lounges around in the nude 24/7, you'd want her to look like she's wearing a bra, right?

      - Super pointy nipples. Nipples that look like those of someone who's been tossed buck-naked into the arctic sea during winter.

      - Tiny eyes. Eyes that are just unnaturally small. Eyes that are too large and super round aren't much better. I dunno, I find them creepy. :shudder

      - The over abundance of 'ripped' male doll bodies. Guys that look like they could grate cheese on their abs. Nicely toned is just fine, thanks.

      - Bad pictures. If I can't see a doll's/body's features well enough, I'm probably not going to be bothered. I need to see blank, straight on, profile, limbs bending, etc. If parts of it are obscured or the pictures are too 'artsy', then I'll assume that there's something that they don't want me to see, and I'll look elsewhere.

I'm sure I could go on and on...

    9. I've quite a few: Limited dolls, that they don't have nude option and the outfit is more expensive than the doll itself, free faceups but no option (which is understandably common), one pair only of skinny hands, flat feet, hip width and belly width on older dolls are the same, too tiny noses, exorbitant shipping prices for small things like eyelashes xD.
I'm sure I'll think of more on my way to bed haha

    10. Eyes that are super far apart.
      Bad Face-ups.
      Bad or messy Wigs.

    11. I have a few.
      1) pointy nose with a skinny bridge...I think they're too fake
      2) big dolls with a chubby baby face. I expect bigger dolls to look mature, and chubby faces just don't work.
      3) really skinny boys. I like my big boys muscular and my small boys chubby!
      4) dolls that look too realistic or too fake? I don't know how to explain this but...If dolls have a perfect human face then I find it kills the beauty of dolls, but I also don't like it if they're too anime-like, with pointy chins and noses ans such, since BJDs are supposed to be more realistic than that? So I look for ones that are in the middle.

    12. Biggest doll turn offs in my opinion are:
Knee and Elbow Joints - When they bend and they look so awkward and unnatural...
Bobble Heads - Examples include Minimee heads and Mini Dollfie Dreams (certain heads look fine, but others just don't)

    13. I don't think I've seen anyone mention turn offs in anthro dolls - personally I don't like it if the face is too realistic or humanish. If it's supposed to be an anthro animal I like it to be closer to a cute cartoon than a real animal. Hence I also prefer anthro dolls with chubby babyish bodies moreso than muscular, human-like bodies.

    14. My dislikes:
      1. Snow white skin, is just kind of creepy to me. Though a lot of people must like it because almost all companies offer it.
      2. Turned up, cutesy wootsy noses. I am searching for dolls with perfectly straight noses and perfect realistic profiles. I HAVE a pug nose, I don't want dolls with one!
      3. Excessively muscled stomachs, I have never seen anyone with a perfect eight pack, it's just too unrealistic and yet almost all male dolls have it.
      4. Big sticking out type ears.
      5. Unnatural breasts, anti-grav, or spheres, nipples that are excessively pointed.
      6. Ugly hands with insufficient detail, sausage fingers, hands that are not in a natural relaxed pose. I wish the companies offered a greater variety of hands, in different poses, too. I want a tea cup holding doll!
      7. Unnatural proportions. Where can I get a doll with wide shoulders and a narrow waist like a normal 18 year old boy? The dolls are either way too skinny or super muscular, with disproprtionately long legs, or oversized heads or huge feet or something. Has anyone ever considered catching a real human being with ideal proportions, measuring them and then just doing the math to make a perfectly scaled, proportionate doll?
Okay, that turned out to be kind of long.... but I ask you, now that we have all listed our pet peeves, the diverse reasons that we would NEVER buy certain types of dolls...how do we get doll companies to listen to us?

    15. Given a doll fits into my rigid 1/6 size requirments, with adults 27cm and children proportioned to match, my turn off is unhappy expressions. Nuetral to cheerful preferred. While Plantdolls 27cm girls fit the size requirment they look really unhappy. I might be interested in Aqua if her tail connected a bit higher up. Having a hole there is kind of creepy.

    16. Pointy anime noses, eyes that are overly disproportionate, eyes that are too close together, lips that are too wide/too narrow, most painted on facial hair, Dollmore Lusion-esq. lips, giant anime elf ears, long hair on male dolls, mature MSDs, too-long legs, short upper arms, "mysterious" looking SDs, sausage fingers, chocolate bar abs and slab-rectangle pecs...oh dear thats a long list I'm just going to stop now! My aesthetics are pretty fluid so i doubt many of these will stick hahaha...

    17. Definitely too big boobs, I'm disappointed that some of the Asian doll producers see the need to make the boobs bigger than what they were. Large thighs also as mentioned above, these should be in proportion to body size but not so perfect that they look unnatural. While I appreciate many art forms I just don't take to gore. My two cents for what its worth.......

    18. I have to say, I'm really not a fan of droopy eyes. Dolls that look half asleep just aren't my thing, I guess.

    19. I think my biggest turn off is teeth and not the cute little vampire teeth on the lower lip. I just think that open mouth and teeth just can ruin a beautiful face, most bjd's faces are so small that the teeth to me look like a odd white gap and it just makes me crazy! I have heard of people who can mod their dolls lips shut which could be interesting. My other big turn off is where the head meets the neck, and it might bother me a lot because I have this problem with my boy, I just hate it when the neck seems too long or too wide for the head. I have a lot of other small things that I dislike, but those are my biggest two.

    20. Fur wigs, I just can't stand them. And the baby-faces on very adult bodies. Other than that, I really like strangely shaped and unusual looking dolls hah.
