The Importance of Naming

Jul 19, 2011

    1. I tend to pick names that I like when I hear them, kinda like what I do with naming dogs... I hear a name and file it away for future use

    2. I have a doll arrving in March. I was dead set on naming her Odette. Ive always loved that name and it fit her look so well. But then I was reading the pride and prejudice for like the 100th time and I thought maybe I should call her Lydia (one of the charaters from the book) Now Im stuck honestly. But at least have a small list of what I might name her.

Come up with a small list and then WAIT!!! I know it sounds a little crazy but the doll will tell you its name. The minute you see him/her youll know. Same goes for kids, pets and heck stuffed animals. Im just as obessed with names as the next person but it will come to you when you dont expect. :)

    3. i have many methods to choosing a name! songs, baby name sites, movies..i even have siblings named after the zombies from cabin in the woods because i liked the names!. I just listen for names and if one clicks i pin it to a character for the story and then i usually start looking for the sculpt once i have the name. If i look before it takes me even longer to choose a name.

    4. Hey guys, Why did you name you're dollies the way you did? Did your doll go okay now THIS is my name. Or was it planned way before it was even in the house? Or did someone else pick it's name for you? Let me know.

      Naming Eva

So Eva my [DZ April] was the first and only doll I've ever "re-shelled" She started as an Obitus and my Partner bought the DZ for me as our 1 year anniversary gift. She spent about 3 month sitting on the shelf with me coming up with everything to Jewel to Hensburg. Of corse none of theses names fit at all! So one day while I was looking at both dollies I finally gave in and put the old Eva's wig on her. Then the cloths and that was pretty much the end of that. She has been my Eva ever since! <3

      Naming Prem

Prem is my LTF DES with DD [Daisy Daze] hooves. To be honest I think I named her that because she looked so Prem and Proper once she was all together. Heh. But I really have no idea why that's her name but it's stuck!

    5. I picked Arcani's name because I have no idea looks wise how I'm gonna have him. Hoodies and goth, steam punk I don't know so I picked it because of it's meaning and the snap it has when you say it...Arcani "Destined for Greatness." as the meaning goes..I love it.

My other dolls have Japanese names. Haruka, Haruhi, Kaname, Haruhi Hakubi only one who doesn't have a Japanese name besides Arcani is Riven.

    6. I only have one doll (Island Doll SD Amy) and I had a list of names I liked, when she arrived she didn't suit any of them. It took me two days to come up with the name Clara, it's Latin and means clear and bright, which is actually kind of apt because her resin is so clear and bright and the eyes that suit her just shine (I tried other eyes and nothing worked until I put her green eyes in).

In my mind Clara is a sweet, elegant English girl. It just suits her.

    7. eeeehhh... well xP it depends. My dolls are all characters so all of them always have their names a long while before coming home. Usually their names are the way they are because well, like most human beings I just thought they were fitting for them. I don't follow a certain theme and although some of the names ended up having pretty fitting meanings these weren't planned prior to that.

Nowe: Nowe is a form of Nowell, an english name that means 'reliable'. Nowe fits the certain bill but I had no specific reason for naming him that.

Eien: Same as Nowe I had no reason for naming him that way, but 'eien' means eternity in Japanese, and both Nowe and Eien are supposed to be members of an immortal race, so xP

      C: his real name is Cadence Landolt, Cadence was picked for no real reason other than me thinking it was pretty much C's name. I did pick his surname because of the Landolt C (the optical test) however, which is a fairly silly reason to be honest xD;

Finnick: his name was originally Finnegan Nickolas, got shortenned to Finnick since it both sounds cooler and is shorter.

Arystar: a corruption of Aleister/Alistar, possibly because he is a fox sprite that was stranded in a shrine in Japan for a long while and the language issues with l/r

Mephistopheles: he's Devil's secondborn son, all his children in our story are named after variations of his name.

Lucifer: same as Mephy above, Luce is Devil's third child.

Hellel: Out of all the Angel brothers (who are also named after actual angels) he is the fallen one, thus Hellel was a fairly fitting name for him

Damian: named after the enfant terrible in the Omen, even though it's just a handle. His real name is a mystery.

Yui: his other two siblings also had names that started with a 'Yu' sound (Yue, Yuliya) and so I picked a name to continue the pattern.

Shainto: his name literally means 'working person' which he definitelly is since he's always doing something. His nickname is 'Saint' because he's good and kind and is always volunteering for all sorts of charity.

    8. I modeled Silvestre's look after a race of elves from a game I play. Her race's name translates to "Wilder Elf" in common so I knew I wanted something to do with that. I started plugging Wild into google translate and came out with Silvestre which is Latin for rustic.

Juniper Wanderweed is from the game but a Kender. His name jumped out at me and I just knew it was right for him.

    9. I don't have my first doll yet but I already know what her name is going to be. When I browse through dolls and find one I like, the name just kind of comes for me. I wouldnt say they have any special meanings though.

    10. My PKF Zio; Aliyana: She's named after my long distanced best friends Little girl.

My PKF Luna; Leilani- It's a bit connected to a Hawaii Lei which is given for affection or love. It means Heavenly Lei. She was my valentine's present from my wonderful fiance.

My PKF Mio; Bryani- It's a character from a book series I love. (Which is funny cause I actually dislike the Character cause she's a B**ch. but I love the name.)

Aubree- Is a character from one of my own stories. She just popped into my head saying hey use me, use me! (She's currently a MSD Volks Sakura buut I'm thinking of changing her to an Iplehouse cause I found a sculpt that suits my Aubree better.)

    11. Kiril was going to be named Kilik, but it changed upon arrival. I picked it because it sounded right on my tongue and resonated. No other reason. I picked the name Hiroshi after one of my old classmates from a very young age, because 1. I really liked the name since a child, 2. It had meaning that was in good balance with kiril's name, and 3. The facial features reminded me an amount of the "orignal" Hiro. It still took me days of researching to find these names though. "Alexander Julian III" was rather instant. He isn't fancy and there were no irl AJI nor AJII, but I liked the name and it "fit" with his aloof appearance in my mind. I always wanted a Julian as a child, but I'll never have kids, soooo....

    12. I usually come up with names while looking at a particular sculpt I'm interested in getting. Gabriel was pretty straight-forward since I've always liked the name and it fits my Bory perfectly.

My incoming Minifee has a working name but I'm not sure I'll keep it. I'll let him tell me once he arrives.

My Claus is another easy one since I'm basing him on one of my characters. I knew his sculpt would be perfect for him. :aheartbea

    13. Generally the name arises from the sculpt when I see it for the first time. The name will have a lot to do with the back story I create for them. I don't have any special themes or list of names I work from in particular - but it does generally just come to me from looking at their sculpt. I do tend to like older traditional names in general so something like Theodore would come to mind quicker than Maddix for example.

I did waffle on the name of my first doll. He was Julien when I first saw him but after he arrived, I sort of thought "Antoine" for a hot second. When I introduced him to my roommate and told her I was debating names, she said "Hi, Julien."... so it stuck.

Only one doll I had trouble naming him in my natural flow. It bugged me because the others had been so easy. I knew he wasn't an impulse buy but looking at him it was like he was an enigma. I eventually rested on Theodore (pretty close to his sculpt name - and maybe it was difficult naming him because he was already "perfect" so to speak). In any event him being hard to name will fit into his character.

    14. All of my dolls are based off of my OCs, so they generally have a name before I even buy them. But if I found a doll I really wanted, I could buy it and give it a character and personality later.

    15. My first 2 dolls were Soom's Gena and Limhwa's Leda. I liked both of those names so I stayed with them. I got a 2nd Gena in tan skin. I wasn't going to call her 'Gena 2' so I call her Tana -as in 'tan-a'. Pretty creative, huh?

I have a Tukihime doll that I got about three weeks ago and she is currently getting a head-to-toe makeover, but I'll wait to see her finished look which would help dictate her name. When I used to do digital art of women I would come up with made-up names for the titles. I'll probably do that with the Tukihime.

I wouldn't name any doll based on people I know. I want them to be their own "person". Besides, some of the outfits they occasionally wear are provocative so I definitely don't want to associate them with any women I know :p

    16. This! But some of my OC's names are inspired by something.

Christabelle is named for Christabella, the main antagonist of the first Silent Hill movie.

Carthusia is named for the Charthusian Order/the Order of Saint Bruno. She is the sin of Pride so I thought this was appropriate. :)

    17. Naming is a really misterious process that I cannot explain! I think for a long time and try to choose something, but all in vain - the name comes all of a sudden when I don't expect it to come. I just do some work or travel in a bus and somehow understand - I'll call him *the name*. I just know that it is right. So now, waiting for the new boy, I try not to worry, I just wait for the name to come;).

    18. Congratulations on your first doll! Sometimes, you just have to wait and see until you completely assemble the doll and hold them for the first time; a name might just pop into your head. Even if it takes months, you will know when you have picked the right name. Good luck!

    19. I'll be getting my first doll in the mail in maybe a month or so. I'm already trying to come up with a really good name for him. I have a kind of list in my head right now, but soon I'll narrow it down further. I can't imagine not having a name ready before he arrived and I'm not too set on the sculpt name for him ether.

    20. I get my dolls' names from all kinds of different places, so they don't really have any theme or anything. Two of my guys' names actually came from a joke, and one is named after an actor I like. With one of them I got the name from glancing at a chess board while wondering what I should call him.

The only sort-of theme we have going on is my fifth doll is named Quincy (meaning "Fifth Child") and my incoming tenth doll will be named Decca (meaning "ten"). So I guess every five doll milestone gets a number name. .^^
