The Importance of Naming

Jul 19, 2011

    1. For me, naming my dolls was (and still is) really important. I don't choose only a simply name for them, I give them a character thereby. I have two dolls. When I ordered my Resinsoul Mei, I knew she would be my character Faerwen (one of serveral game-characters I have ever had in my mind and used in various MMORPGs). It was different with Yuriko. I saw her the first time and had a "OMG - I must get her"-feeling, but no idea for a name or her character. In the time I waited for her arrival, I considered both, the name and the character for her. I named her Yuriko Cattleya Saito - the first and the second name both means flowers :)

But I never choose names from my family or pets or friends for my dolls. I think everyone and every pet is unique and deserves a unique name. Same right for the dolls

    2. For me, naming is a very important step in "bonding" I guess. If I can't find a name that sticks soon after my doll arrives, I have a hard time finding a direction to go with them.

    3. Well i don't know about the importance of it, but i think it's nice to name your dolls as it gives them a personality.

    4. I like to pick names that have good meanings...Like Avalon is a place of legend..Or Blaine (my Bei to be.)

    5. All my dolls have names before they arrive. They are characters I write about so they all have their places in the story.

My characters are based on Georgette Heyer books, so most of their names come from there, yet some are OCs. Most of them I don't actually name because of this :)

    6. I had already chosen a name for my boy doll before he arrived, but I had to change my plans after I saw his face for the first time. I just felt like the name that I had chosen for him didn't really mach his personality.

At first I wanted to choose a Korean name (simply because my doll is from Seoul). I thought that Jun could be a good name for him, but after I finally received my package, opened it and saw his face for the first time I understood that I need to choose a new name for my doll :sweat
Finding a new name didn't take much time. I had been looking at his face for about 5 minutes when a name suddenly came into my mind. I decided to name him Toshiyuki (智之). It isn't a Korean name like I planned before, but I think that this name really suits him :)

    7. My girl had her name long before her arrival. She is based on one of my RP characters which is near and dear to my heart and the instant I saw the sculpt I knew it would be perfect for her.

    8. My dolls always have name before arriving at home. It helps me to set their personality. I usually have first the main points of their personality and I search for a name that fits (thank you behindyourname :D). I choose one of the aspect I like (for exemple, strong) and search for a name (english name meaning strong : Carlisle) and that's done !

    9. Naming a doll is... Fun, more than important, to me. Usually I don't worry about it much - I have friends who will give a name to everything they can, from their computers to each of their stuffed animals, but I've never been like this.
Dolls, on the other hand, are different. So I admit I have a lot of fun thinking about names to choose for them. Until now, all of my dolls received their names before being delivered to my house.

I usually look for different names, that also have a nice sound to my ears. Many of the names which I like are considered weird by other people ;_; As of now, most of the names I took from actual people I've met, except one, which is from a book. So I don't research sites dedicated to baby names, for example... I also don't roleplay, nor use name generators: I just remember people who I've met and have beautiful/different names, and I go with that.

    10. Same here, my doll would stay with me forever and I'm still thinking hard of a name for him. He's my OC but I haven't got a name for him for years @.@

    11. I decided all my dolls names would begin with the letter E, because my name begins with E.....Which was OK till I got to doll number 7 or 8 - started struggling then LOL - I had no idea originally that I'd end up with so many dolls to name!

    12. I used to be really good at coming up with names for everything! But lately I couldn't even name my marimos. I just recently got a Zefi pukifee but for the life of me I can't think of a name. Or for the Ante my sister gave me! I've gone around and asked my friends and family if they had any suggestions and although I liked the names I heard, none of them every really POPPED out at me. Like, None of the names I heard were "Oh my goodness, that's the most perfect name in the world for them!" which is what I really look for when I'm naming something important. Which is great because I'm not bored with the name in the long run but sucks because it is taking me forever to name them now. 8(( Makes me feel really bad that they're just sitting around nameless.

    13. My current girl I've had for over two years and I didn't find a name I liked until recently, haha. But it stuck! Naming is pretty important because each doll is different, so if you dress them up a certain way and put effort into their appearance but can't name them, then it gets a little weird. Unless you're a collector and you tend to just go with whatever sculpt name and character the company gives them-- then I guess naming them yourself isn't a big deal. But names help with who your doll is!

    14. I have names for dolls I haven't even ordered yet X_X. It's just whatever feels right, I guess. They pretty much name themselves.

    15. The only doll I've named (the rest have names already to begin with) was named after my favourite anime girl, i.e. Honoka. I like Japanese names... If I have another, I'd probably name her Kanade. ;-)

    16. I like Robert Jordan books and all the dolls I plan to buy are will be from his Wheel of Time ^_^ So they already have the place in the story.

    17. Ooh, complicated story:
The first BJD I ever wanted was Crobidoll Nia. I also liked the Tei model, so through some mental process, I thought I would save up for Nia and call him Dei. I really like Biblical names for some reason. So Dei was not only from "Tei," but from Agnus Dei = lamb of God. But I stopped liking the Nia model, so I have conflicting feelings right now. x-x

The first BJD I actually got is called Eden (again a Bible reference, it means paradise). When he arrived, I kept calling him Dei because I still liked the Crobidoll Nia, but I fought against my brain and I call him Eden normally now, haha. Since I stopped wanting to get Dei, but I still love the name, I don't know what to do with it. It would suit Eden, but he is already Eden! OTL

Those were the "made from scratch" names. I have one sculpt I randomly found while browsing that 100% suits one of the characters I have, so that doll will have the name and traits of the character. The character's name is Oberon, like Shakespeare's king of faeries. :) Then there's a sculpt I adore that I want to buy but can't find a name for.

I find it's best to sit down and think, the name will hit me in the face, so to speak. Eden's name is the name of an artist from an online forum. It was a part of their username. With this doll I want, I'm not sure at all about a name, because all the names I like seem too childish for him. I'll have to think harder. :)

    18. I think naming is incredibly important, and if a name doesn't jump out to you right away - it's probably not the one. I've found that, for me, it's almost impossible to decide on a name before a doll gets in my hands. I know some people buy them specifically to fit their own character, but I don't know how I'd do that.
I'm afraid I'd buy one with a name in mind, and as soon as he or she got here, they'd practically tell me a different one. ;)

    19. I love figuring out names! It's a difficult task sometimes, but the research can be a whole lot of fun. I have a name picked out for my first doll already, but I hope it suits her! Sometimes, I think characters just name themselves, you know? :)

    20. I actually named my first doll after a Disney Character. I think naming a doll is very difficult. You don't want to name a doll a name you want to name your child. But you want a beautiful name to match their look.
