The Importance of Naming

Jul 19, 2011

    1. I've changed Pam's name three times until I found the perfect oneT_T' And now I would like to change her boyfriend's name name too.
I prefer rare human names which I am looking for on different websites. But when I changed my girl's name to Pamela I thought of Poison Ivy actually:)

    2. There is a great site for naming. www.behindthename.com I highly recommend that for those who can't find a name!

    3. I'm sure this will sound ceeee-razy, but my dolls name themselves. I don't name them before they arrive, and every time I have a "character" in mind for them before they arrive, they invariably do not suit the character I had in mind (I am not a writer though, so it's a whole different thing than a writer finding a doll to suit a character of theirs). Most of the time, a name just pops in my head once they arrive. Sometimes, they keep their sculpt name, but most of the time, something I wouldn't have imagined before they arrived, pops into my head shortly after their arrival. If they don't name themselves, they generally don't stay, so there is something about the inspiration I get from them that gives them a name I would not have thought of before their arrival.

    4. I feel like I am the only one out there who hasn't named any doll. I don't think there is any way I'd remember all there names without having them written down somewhere so I just find it easier to stick with their company name. So naming them is not important to me

    5. I love naming!! I even named a few dolls on my wishlist. It's like naming your kid. :)

    6. Naming can be hard. I found my name by watching a movie and there was a character in the movie whose name was also the name of one of my favorite authors. So that clicked. But I've got dolls coming and am dreading finding names though I'm trying to push them into my story so something will fall out.....

    7. This topic made me think of Oscar Wilde's "The importance of being earnest".

I think giving names to inanimate objects or pets in general is the first step to get attached to them. If you give something a name, you'll certanly start some sort of a relation with it and it will be hard to let it go. Therefore I think naming dolls are really important and I always try to give them names I really like. As I buy dolls to be my characters, their names are already decided, but I name my characterd after names I love and that I would consider give to my future kids. I also get inspired by actors I like and sometimes by characters from movies/TV shows/books.

    8. I've posted in this thread a while ago but continuing from where I left last time I have more names to contribute as well as the reasons behind them~ The way I look at the importance of naming hasn't changed since, I still believe that naming anything, including dolls, is very very important and in a way the thought and love that goes into the name in one way represents the 'bond' between owner and doll.

Lavinia N. Scarlet: The N. stands for Neferata; some people that know me also know that I am interested in Warhammer 40k, and because I'm a lore nut in whatever thing I become involved in I, in turn, became also interested in Warhammer fantasy. Neferata in warhammer was the very first vampire to ever exist; her name loosely translates as 'she who is beautiful in death'. Lavinia was chosen as her first name because it simply suited her best, her nickname, Lavi, stands for 'lion' however, which was an intentionally intimidating nickname for such a petite and proper lady. Her surname is Scarlet and was picked merely because of the Scarlet sisters in the Touhou series of danmaku games that happens to be a personal favorite of mine, so I wanted to pay some sort of homage to it.

Suzuran: Suzuran and Reiran's names were picked together with my best friend. The two of them are twins and we wanted for their names to sound similar; they translate into 'bell orchid' and 'ghost orchid' respectively.

Kouki: His name means brightness/brilliance, it was picked to suit his sunny and upbeat personality since he's a little ray of sunlight~

Evander: Picked by Bosschan's girfriend and later wife, it's a Greek name that means 'good man'. Evander's real name is a mystery.

Mirai: Her name literally translates to 'future', it was picked to match her older brother's name 'Yagate' which means 'soon to come'.

Cinder: I went over a great deal of names for this guy but decided on the simplest one of them all 'Cinder' because he's one of the last of the existing dragons. He's not directly associated with fire, however, although he's capable of breathing it along with lightning which is his primary breath weapon, and cold.

    9. I had a lot of difficulties to find names for my BJDs !! I just began in the BJD world (febuary 2013 for my first one) and I stayed a long time with "cutie little one", "the big one" and "headless" (cause I bought a body and did not found the head). I was able to name them only after begin to manipulate them and blush them.

I also decided to give them star-related names, cause the two fauna have a background linked with the "starchilds".

Yll Uncanny : Yll mean "star" in alban but she has a second personnality.

Orion : Nothing much to say. It's a fauna, really shy. Name come frome a joke with his belt. (it's quite a shame, I know ><)

Erakis : The big sister of Orion. A fauna too, more assertive. They together come from the stars.

    10. I do alot work with naming my dolls, letting the name go into the personality and reflect it. I already have names for one that maybe not here before late autumn.... I love names and letters, I have always did, long before I discovered bjd. When I dont found names on my doll, I feel it is not compleated jet. Like it misses something, almost like missing a hand or the heart.

    11. Most dolls have had a name before they arrived here, but my latest doll has been here for a week and still has no name. Eventually a name will just pop into my head and she will be complete. lol.

    12. I like old fashioned names, or names that are slightly fantastical, or odd... I like to think of them as being distinctly dolls and not people if that makes sense. I don't really make up in-depth characters for my dolls, but even if I did imagine a character for them it is the character of a living doll. My dolls are named Bertram and Cian - but I might rename Cian to something more whimsical. Maybe Crow, or Sparrow, or Wren. I have also considered naming a future doll after one of the fairies in Midsummer Night's Dream - Peaseblossom, or Mustardseed. Or cute food related names like Sesame or Ginger or Nutmeg. Names that are maybe eccentric or unusual for a person, so it feels definitely out of the ordinary...

    13. My first doll did not have a name before he arrived, but my other three dolls did. The three that had set names was due to the fact that they had a set character. My first doll did not have a set character. But most of my planned dolls have set names because naming the character usually comes way before I even think about a doll for him/her. As for finding the names...well, sometimes they just pop into my mind. Other times I usually look around on baby name websites. I tend to look for/choose interesting uncommon names. That being said, most of the names I choose are older and usually a language I find unique. I also go about names by their meaning; most of the time, the meaning is something that can relate to the character. Overall, it can be a very long process sometimes...*_*

    14. My first doll will be named after a character i created for a story.

    15. My girl definitely named herself. Her name is Delphine, and that's nowhere near any of the names I was considering for her before she arrived. I saw it in a list of names I was reading last week (in frustration because I didn't know what to call her and "Rita", her sculpt name, is NOT her) and I looked over at her and knew it suited. It was just "her", the same way her sculpt name WASN'T.

    16. I think naming is pretty hard!! I don't want to sound tooooo pretentious sometimes...

Haha I'm still debating if the name for my doll is suitable for the character in mind, his face looks a little 'too young' and a little 'too smug'. As of right now my DWC-01 is named Lycoris, stemming from latin name lycoris radiata - the red spider lily. I s-s-sort of wanted to make story for this character based of the mythology revolving around the spider lily. How if your path is lined with these flowers when you're meeting a loved one, you'll never be able to meet them again. But I thinkkkk the character would be more suited for a more mature/somber looking sort of guy hahaha. Who knows.

      I got off track.

    17. My best friend, Orca, has basically helped name (if not out right named) my dolls. I love it! They all work perfectly. She's my naming muse. She usually starts with a letter and we go from there.

    18. Naming of dolls is just another fun part that I like about the hobby

    19. Ok Hands up, I am terrible at remembering names, I keep the original makers name so I remember it. Otherwise my dolls would have a new name from week to week!

Also I am so pedantic. At least when I order a doll and I pore over it on my computer, I can get the name fixed in my head! lol:lol:

    20. I've just received my very first doll & as soon as I saw her pic I knew what her new name would be.......Anna......she looked like an Anna to me & as her artist name was Anona the "o" has just been removed ;)
