The Importance of Naming

Jul 19, 2011

    1. For me it's the same thing ^^ I open their boxes and a name appears xD The exception however is my latest boy. He doesn't have name and I think I will keep it this way, in my story he invents multiple names for himself.

    2. Naming is a difficult thing for me when it comes to anything. x'D;; So when my first doll came, she was nameless for a while--a month--and I felt SO bad for her!
I wouldn't think to name her after family or friends' names even if I liked them. I think it's a little weird. "Naming after" is something I just don't like when it comes to naming, and I'm not too keen on copying names at all, though it tends to happen. As long as it's not so...Noticable? Recognizable? Something along the lines.
My first doll's name is "Celphy" though it is short for her actual name "Celphina." I choose her real name as Celphina for a few reasons:
"Celphy can sound like the American(?) term for a self-camera image, "selfie" which I still don't like the relation (but the people I know use "selca" instead/never heard of the term at all). So, it was a counter to that.
I also took the name "Celphy" from a video game character's name "Selphy" (fully Selphius). I really liked it when I found it. And it didn't hold too much significance to me/I didn't have any pressure to emulate the character in my doll with the name since I never played that game. (That's something I have an issue with too)
At first I was contemplating her name to be along the lines of Cenallis/Senalis but it never seemed right to me. So I was really happy to settle on something!
I wouldn't mind using a popular name though. And for a while I was about to settle with her sculpt name (though I'm stubborn when it comes to that too).
      Since I envision my dolls' characters to be from a fantasy like world though, I'm more driven to give them names that I make up. It's hard for me, but I guess I put that upon myself x'D;;;

    3. My Anthony (Doll Leaves) has yet to be named. That's in part to him not arriving till mid august and that he will be several characters. He is not a character in himself or at least not yet. Once I start getting more dolls and getting dolls for my characters I can name him and get him a character all his own. Maybe somewhere along the line a name will come to me. I love names and always get real excited at the chance to name things (this includes my cars lol) But it's very important to me that the name be a good match to the character or to that specific physical doll.

    4. It takes me a hard time to name my dolls. Its just very difficult for me to think of a name I feel comfortable to it. So yea I will refer them by their default name.

    5. Uhm, my dolls all have themes sure, Erurainon has a name in high elvish from LOTR =p which is a form of mythology (most people base elvish characters and things on it), two of my girls have a steampunk theme to their names (sure, its last names but still XD), and the rest are usually either based on a language or culture or area as a theme (considering most of them are family =p)
yea, sure, sometimes, sometimes i use old nicknames for friends if a doll reminds me of them =p and i mean nicknames based on either rp characters of theirs or mine
actually, i named my daughter after my first girlfriend, who died a week before i found out i was pregnant. then a few months ago, i bought a SSDF DEW off the marketplace on here, i knew immediately the head was meant to be on a girl body rather than the boy one and couldnt figure out why i felt that way until it arrived, i put on its wig, and held it up.... right there behind it was a picture of the girl i'd named my daughter after and they both have the same name now =p Also i named a doll "aurora celeste" so that even if i dont have more kids, i'll have one "child" named that :3 i LOVE that name combination (besides, her parents are modeled after myself a bit and my boyfriend =p)
I do that sometimes, when i have a particularly difficult doll on my hands, its how i named my elvish doll XD who sadly for him, is currently occupying my otherwise headless FEMALE torso and he's not happy XD

does this answer everything sufficiently? :3

    6. when i purchased my doll, i had a name and personality all set for her. i thought she would fit right in. i had a wig and clothes purchased to match the character's taste. Miyako Frost, a blind and mute girl, who i have started writing a story about. she is overly serious. when my doll came, i realized she already had a personality and neither the wig nor the clothes would suit her, hard as i tried to make them. im still trying to find her forever eyes, and a forever wig (although i really like the default wig she came with). she is so light and painfully shy and so full of longing i knew she had a story all to herself. i had to wait 2 weeks before she finally told me her name, as i tried many but none of them worked. Kira is her name, and i reeeeeally love it. i want even really fond of the name kira until i knew her.

    7. I ordered my first doll this month too. On another thread, someone suggested me to go to a library and check heroine's names on the back of novels (good idea). Since I am searching for a Victorian name, I was hesitating between Josephine and Rosemary. Now, many more names are added to my list (like Athenais). Guess I will need to wait until the doll arrive to pick the true name :D

    8. This happened with my first bjd, I had a DOD Si on the way and planned to call him Yukio, but I was not too sure about the name so when I ever I thought about him I referred to him as si-bi and when he got home it just stuck, I try harder to think of names now but sometimes the model name really suits them! I have a zaoll on the way and I zaoll is a gorgeous name (probably because I had a dog with a similar name)

Kaybee I understand how you feel about using names you wanted for your children, I just got a kitten and my partner called him jake, which is the name that was always going to be what I called my son (if I ever had one lol)

Has anyone had a doll for years and wanted to change their name? I recently finished uni and came home to my dolls but now I'm not sure on one of my girls names. :,(

    9. I'm getting two dolls, and still can't think of proper names for either of them. :c
I want them to be very personal to me, considering they're going to be my first, but nothing so far seems to click. I hope something comes to me once I actually see them!
I want their names to be unique, but not fantasy elf-like names.

    10. If the doll is turning into a character of mine, then his name is already waiting for him. Though this is by no means ironclad; sometimes the doll changes my mind for me after he arrives.

If he hasn't got a name waiting for him, I usually just wait for him to 'tell' it to me. Much of the time, he tells me right away. Ot else I decide for him, "Gee, you just totally look like an Istvan. Therefore, that's your name. I have spoken." ^^ Sometimes the little bastards make me wait a month or more before they finally give it up. Occasionally they pick a name that I don't particularly like, which is how I know it's really theirs.

But sometimes the doll doesn't tell me his name, or seem to know it, so I have to do some work. If I can at least get a point-of-origin for the doll, I can then figure out which type/ethnicity/etc. name I want, which means I know which sites to go search for inspirations. There is usually at least a few names on random 'standby' Post-Its for any type/ethnicity/etc. names that I particularly like & have jotted down. If the right name doesn't leap out at my on its own, I usually whittle the short-list down to 2 or 3, whereupon I blitz my friends with a pop quiz. I consider their votes (best 3 out of 5), and often I end up picking their choice, but just as often I end up picking the other choice. Naming is rilly rilly an idiosyncratic thing up in here. :whee:

Basically, whichever name I end up with, it has to be something that feels right, and looks right on the doll, and springs to mind easily whenever I glance at him. It has to associate well, it has to stick.

    11. I've found that if a doll doesn't get a name between the time they are purchased and the time arrive they probably aren't staying. I also won't give them a name until I have officially purchased the doll otherwise I'll jinx it and lose the sale. Weird but it's happen quite a few times.

As for actual names I tend to stick to simple and/or old fashion names. Most of them will have a surname too and if I am feeling extra fancy a middle name.

    12. My alberta from DC is still nameless but she been getting worked on so she will have a great story behind her and her look and face up. I mean everything. She currently has her default faceup so yeah she's Alberta but that will be soon changed.

I had her for 3 months sadly.

    13. I have two dolls, I've only had them for about a week but I've been planning for them for two months. They are here but I don't know what to name them! X__X Whereas most people seem to have OC's that they base the dolls on, I bought my dolls purely as an artistic tool. Perhaps that is why i'm having trouble bonding with them. I love them and will not get rid of them, but perhaps they will remain Big Doll and Little Doll. This annoys my partner to no end! Any suggestions?

    14. "No name" names might work! My friend and I have a pair of twins we purposefully named Nanashi and Nonamé since they are supposed to be nameless in their story. c:

    15. I've known for years that i was going to buy a very specific doll, but I have no idea what to name her! It's strange for me, because I create new characters for RPs and story writing every day and take notes and everything. But even going through my own little database of characters, I'm finding it really hard to apply one of these names to her face. I'm not too worried about it though, because I kind of just want her to "develop and be her own person and discover who she is on her own", if that makes sense for a doll to do that. But you all know what I mean, right? If I'm having so much trouble naming her, maybe she'll turn out to be one of those independent, adventurous types.

    16. I personally like names with a meaning (Although I have a few characters that I just like the name of). They usually match the character in particular.

    17. I usually have a name in mind when I buy a doll. Occasionally, I've had a name in mind before I bought a doll, and once it got here, the name didn't fit at all, so I change it. I've also noticed, that if I either keep forgetting a doll's name or I can't name it, it means I usually don't bond with it.

    18. I'm still trying to think of a name for my next doll I'm getting in THIS place in time...When I saw RS Qing I just knew her name the second I saw her. "Shane." Ironically she's named after a character from the movie Osmosis Jones but I also like the name Shane and think it fits for her...She'll be my Avalon's sister but I don't have her yet...And I won't be getting her til around Christmas. This doll I'm getting now is a hybrid and I'm waiting on the body then to order the head...I'm just having a hard time thinking of a name. I'm thinking of naming her Shadow after the character I created of a Balljointed doll who came to life dubbed The Shadow Dancer but I dunno...I'm still trying to pick.

    19. Names are really important to me. The name is a part of doll's personality and character.
I prefer short but rare or even unusual names. Often it takes a lot of time. Ultimately the most important thing is the result.

    20. A little story. The last doll I got, I was going to name Never. She was supposed to arrive in two days, but didn't and was lost somewhere in transit. A dollie friend said, "Well, with a name like Never, what do you expect?" I said, "ok ok, you may be right. I'm changing her name to Bramble! And the next doll I order, is going to be named Super Easy Transaction." Bramble finally showed up, Super Easy transaction got here sooner than expected, and recently I've just received Super Easy Transaction 2, ahead of schedule.

*I change their names once they are here, but until they get here? It's going to be Super Easy Transaction +#* XD
