The Importance of Naming

Jul 19, 2011

    1. Naming is a trkicky thing for me. From one side I never consider names that important as I tend to use mold names in exchange by random, but on the other side, whenever I purchase a new doll I spend tiring hours on thinking which name would suit my doll best. There's always alot of saying out loud, matching, asking, wondering before I'm 100% sure. I need to feel the name suits the doll, depsite the fact I don't consider them OCs and they don't have any specific characters. All my dolls are girls dressed more or less in laces and frills, so in a natural way, their names are vintage-ish, old-time like. I would probably never go for anything like "Jane" or "Kate" (my name, btw :P). There must be some "frilliness' to it aswell. :D

    2. In my opinion, naming is important to create attachment to your doll, either the doll is totally new / fresh from the company, or second-handed. Because you named them, they will officially belong to you. Like a seal. Or at least that's what I think :P Anyway names also makes the doll easier for mentioning, especially if the owner has numerous family members. In my case, I love the combination of these letters: R, N, and Y. Dunno why XD Thus all of my dolls will have at least one of those letters in them~ Rion, Noir, Orianne, Aaron, Naoya, Yukino, Yumeno, maybe later Rorona, Youran, Yoruna, Yuiren.... :D

    3. i am not going to name my dolls
instead i will just give them nicknames
i don't regard this as naming as i will forget the nicknames i have given soon :P

    4. My first girls name just poped into my head when I saw her and ordered her, she basically fell into place completely. Sadly my second girl has been a different story. I thought her name was Lydia, but it's not, doesn't fit, doesn't sit right. I figure she'll tell me her name once I have her in her correct eyes, wig and clothing. Right now, she's sitting nameless and sulking on my shelf. The thrid doll I plan on getting with my second paycheck this summer, already has a name, theme and everything planned out. Poor nameless girl. Either a name just comes to me, or it doesn't. I like when it does. I name mine normally names I would love to name my kids or pets, but would be laughed at by family for doing so. So I still get to use them :)

    5. I found myself taking longer thinking of a name for my dolls than it took me to choose a name for my dog... hopefully when my dolls arrive I will have names for them.

    6. I already have a name for my dream dolls but only because I'll try to make them look like my OC's xD, picking names can be a real pain but there are a lot of useful sites like "behind the name" to search for the perfect name.

    7. I'm Trying To Think Of A Name For A Future Doll. Usually I Just Think Of Some Names And Whichever One Just Sticks Is The One I Go With. Like Ashley, I Love The Name And It Has Been Stuck For The Past Few Months And I Can't Think Of A Better One. Still Looking Around For Other Names But Ashley Is What Might Stay. :D

    8. My doll's name comes from a famous painter I like. I've kind of decided to run with the theme and pull modern names from long gone artist's names. Mostly because I really like art and admire a lot of artists. I'm just trying to pick a painter whose artwork and abilities fits the image of my doll I have in my head. I also have tried to pick only painters I think everyone would recognize the name of if I told them who it was.

I don't think it's obvious at first glance where the names I have picked out for my current and future dolls come from which is probably better because it's a little embarrassing. I think if the names I have picked out don't work for future dolls though I would just go with the name I feel when I look at them. I'm not set on this way of naming it is just something to give me ideas. :)

    9. my doll and all the other dolls I plan to have in the future are made after my own original characters which I already had since many years. So all of my dolls will have names from the start.
When creating the stories of my OCs I automatically think about names. It's not really difficult for me ^^

    10. Names are a huuuuge deal to me :sweat It honestly takes me so long to come up with ones I like, I'll generally go through "test phases" where I try a name out and see if it sticks, but more often and I not I'll toss 5-6+ around before I find one that I really like. That's how I rolled for my first two dolls, coming up with a character for them as they're being made/after they arrive despite. With that not having worked out so well though I think I'll stick to characters that are already well developed and familiar to me rather than trying to come up with names/backstories/personalities on the spot. But nevertheless names are of a really significant importance to me, the character has to suit the name, the doll has to suit the character, the doll has to suit the name...I feel like otherwise I'd end up playing the same game where there's literally no attachment or inspiration from the doll.

    11. It looks like a lot of people really stress over their dolls' names; that actually makes me feel a bit better, as I do the same thing...
I think that names are definitely important: they say that names can impart their meaning to the person being named. I'm superstitious like that, so I try to think carefully about them. I named my first doll during the wait after I ordered--actually, I came up with the idea for a female companion to him, Hato (meaning "dove", but it also sounds a little like "heart") and I named him Tori ("bird") to complement that. But when she finally arrived, months later, she completely rejected him--they don't match up well at all. I'm starting to wish I'd named him Tsuru ("crane") or some other name with more meaning. I'm thinking about changing it, and I'm a but reassured that I won't be the first person to do so.
I had the hardest time naming my second boy; I wanted an Asian name that was a bird, to go with my theme so far, but also a mythical creature, because he's part of a band whose other members are named after mythical creatures. It was a lot of constraints... I finally settled on Suzaku (the Chinese Phoenix), and I'm very happy with it. Also, while he remained unnamed for several months, he looked kind of sad and vulnerable, to me anyway. Now that he's been named, and such a strong name, he looks much more confident to me. It could be all in my head, of course, but I don't want to leave a doll so long without a name again. Hato has an unexpected twin now, and so I've started the whole process over again... I'm looking into dove-like names now.

    12. I had names for my girls, but the more I think about it I realize their names don't quite fit. So, now I'm searching again for the perfect names.

    13. Names are really important to me. c: In my opinion, they reflect the doll's personality/background in a single word and tell you a little bit about the owner as well since people are likely to use names that they like. :3 Sometimes, it takes me forever to come up with the perfect name and other days names come to me within seconds! There are even times where I had the perfect name picked out and when the doll came, it didn't fit at all. @__@;;

I've learned that if I have a doll I can't name a doll properly, it usually means I can't bond with them either.

    14. I usually spend quite a bit of time choosing names for my dolls. I even check to see what the name means. I've sometimes discarded a name because the meaning didn't coincide with my idea for a character. A little crazy, I guess.

    15. I usually spend quite a bit of time choosing names for my dolls. I look up the meaning of the name I have in mind, and if it doesn't coincide with the personality of my character, then I discard it. Sometimes coming up with the right name takes a long time. I like it to be perfect though. A little crazy, I guess.

    16. Names are sort of important I guess. I mean, they sort of need to fit the personality you've superimposed on them; but that's more of a perspective thing. My poor doll went through several name changes before I finally found one that fit him...

    17. for me the name is extremely important.
My dolls are mostly the personification of something, and so I name them after that as well. They actually ' are ' their name.
So, my dolls will never have an average commen name though.

    18. I usually put a lot of thought into naming my dolls, trying to match the personality that the character seems to be.

    19. The sculpt of my doll looks very familiar to a Korean singer, so I named her after the real person.

    20. For me the name is a part of a doll, to make her more real, and give her a personnality.
My dolls names comes from anime for dolls over 40 cm & from other thinks for my tinies (book, film, song, ...)
Every doll i own has been or will be customised in order to match with her name.
