The Nameless Doll: Troubles naming dolls.

Jan 19, 2010

    1. I like to have names picked out but I have no clue what to call my new girl that I am currently paying for!

    2. Honestly, I enjoy the ambiguity of a nameless face. There's something truly mysterious about these lifelike resin people and I feel strange giving them names. It's as if they already HAVE names and they just haven't told me yet.

    3. My BJD (and future BJDs are included too) are not based on characters so I usually just think about it until something clicks. When my VOLKS Megu arrived I had no idea what I was going to name her, after nearly two weeks I finally decided on a name. Naming dolls can be so hard sometimes! >x< So that doesn't happen again, I'm trying to keep a list of names that I like to use for dolls so I at least have somewhere to start looking when I get my next doll. I've also started coming up with names for a few future dolls but it won't be official until I have the doll and see whether or not that name really suits them.

    4. Names are incredibly important to me and I do not want to have to rename characters so I'm taking all the time it takes to find the perfect ones!

Right now I'm waiting on things for my dolls and still figuring out their looks and personalities, so while the dolls are headless and in pieces, it's not really possible to name them yet haha...

    5. I got my Miss Kitty three days ago, but before that, I had a 5 month layaway. Even with that much time, I don't have a concrete name for her. I've considered Cait Sith for reasons I am unsure of. The name just...popped up. But I am not sure if that is going to be her name.

    6. I'm waiting on a resinsoul rong right now and even though I have her character pretty much worked out and a whole outfit and wig for her already she just doesn't have a name. It really is driving me crazy like a lot of you are saying. I actually take the naming of my dolls pretty seriously and their names have to have the right feeling as well as the right meaning to go with their character. Her name is going to be Japanese (so clichรฉ, I know, but her character is a Japanese mythological creature) and even though I've been researching Japanese names and my girlfriend knows some Japanese and has been helping me a lot I just can't find the name that feels right for her. I'm hoping when I have her in my hands and I can see her all dressed up that the name thing will just some how work itself out. But anyway I'm really sympathetic to anyone else who is having naming woes.

    7. My first doll, a Doll Leaves Dora still has no name. Naming is something I've always had trouble with. My second doll was a DZ tiny so I just started calling her "Little One" and it stuck! I actually really like it because is reminds me of Little My from Moomin. I also just finished paying from a 5StarDoll Yami, the one with the purple skin and today it struck me to name her Taro since her skin color reminds me of bubble tea! Little One and Taro were lucky because ordinarily I'm awful with names haha! :S

    8. I have names for all of the dolls I own, even if I don't like the name. Like, I named a MH spider doll Phoda, but I didn't like that name for her so I recently renamed her Phiona. (Still a little similar, but better sounding for her character.)

    9. I had names picked out for two of my dolls before they arrived. With the others I had no idea what they should be named. Two of those dolls have kept the name they came with because it did seem to fit them, and one doll got a name after about a month.

I do have one doll, however, for whom I cannot think of a name. No name was coming to me at all. Finally I realized the problem was that I was not as in love with the doll as I had been when I first got him. So I have recently decided to sell him.
I wouldn't decide to sell a doll simply for lack of a name, but the fact that I had sort of fallen out of love with him helped me decide. Maybe he just didn't fit with my doll family too, which was why I was not inspired to name him.

    10. I hate naming, I always ask someone else to do it for me. Always. Does anyone have a process they go through for it?

    11. I've got an adorable Doll-Love Yoyo with no name. I've had her a few weeks, but haven't hit inspiration yet. I was thinking Kiki before I got her, but now, I'm just not sure. WHat I'm going to do is just troll name lists to figure out what general direction I want to go in for her, and then narrow things down.

    12. I had a name & a character all picked out for my mir/ka...but then he came & he didn't fit the character I designed so he was nameless/characterless for the first month until I said "f***K it" and actually named him Nameless lol. He's not from this world tho he's like a fairy/nature spirit & would probably name himself that anyway.

    13. I still haven't named my doll and it's been about a year. I just call her the sculpt name >< I've tried names in the past, but nothing seems to fit better than Siean.

    14. I have no idea how my first girl got her name, it just came to me as "Gale". When my Chloe arrived I was calling her that until her faceup, then once her eyes and wig was set she begged to be called "Abbey". I don't like forcing out names I wait for the accidental calling them something then I think "Eureka that's it!" ><

    15. I either give my doll a name and change it 12 times or I just leave her nameless for a while. I only have 2 dolls with set names.
Sometimes I'll just name them so I can refer to them easier, but it always changes. :sweat

    16. A couple of years ago I spent all my free time looking up names; for character, future children, pets. I loved baby names world (parents connect, you used to be able to search for in Google and all kinds of interesting names and meanings arrived) but sadly I think that page had to shut down. Namesberry is now a rather good search engine if I remember correctly.

On another note, do you think dolls need names? I'm interested in a Resinsoul Xue, but what I want to do with her, mostly photograph and use as a model for drawing, haven't filled me with the desire to name her.
Perhaps that changes when you have the doll in your hands...

    17. 6 of my dolls have names. One is my Skyrim character (from time before the game), one is my Morrowind character, two of the boys names just came right when I saw pictures of them. Two girls got their names after a while but right now I have 2 full dolls and 4 floating heads without a name. I have ideas but I have not found them names yet.

    18. Naming dolls is always difficult for me! It took me about three to five months to just like a name for one of my girls. I usually like naming them after flowers or very feminine people.

    19. I have one doll and I think I have her name, but I still flip flop with it a bit.

    20. I LOVE naming dolls. Sometimes I spends hours looking for the proper name for one of my new dolls. That's so fun!
When I name a doll from a novel I like, it's very fast. I had a Volks School A I named Refuge : named the day I got him. Same for my vampire lady, Gabriella. Or my Dollstown J, Doloriel.
Sometimes it's so difficult to find the right name that I search during months, chaning many times my mind... once I was so hesitant that I even ask for ideas, here on the forum! The doll ended with a name choose by an other member :) (It was Keshi, my dollstown tan Soph).

A doll without a name is a doll I will end up selling. If I really can't find a name for it, it's because it doesn't inspire me.
