The Nameless Doll: Troubles naming dolls.

Jan 19, 2010

    1. Ah, this thread makes me feel so in the minority!
I have a terrible time naming things. My friends' computers, cars, and even houseplants used to get names, but mine had to be named by someone else or they'd remain as "my Vaio" or "my Focus." I take forever to start a video game where you have to name your own character, because naming just paralyzes my brain! And his continues with my dolls. With a rare exception, they go by sculpt name, otherwise don't have names and it doesn't bother me.

But then I meet people who have wonderful names and stories for their doll companions and want to know all about mine.. And I've got nothing. Or a thread like this where people talk about how much they enjoy the process and the deepened connection through name giving.

For those reasons I wish I could name them, and only for that is it a problem that they're nameless. I want to be part of the fun of the community, and have somehing interesting to say back! But if it's just me in my own home alone with them.. They could be without names forever, and I'm just as happy for their watchful presence and quiet company.

    2. I usually make lists of names for incoming dolls but for my FL Celine none of them fit her at all and I just came up with something on the spot. She's now called Hadley.

    3. I DO have a little girl who doesn't have a name yet - not cause I have problems finding names but because I'm not sure who she is yet (except being my little Debbie's bestest friend...)

    4. My first doll was named before he even came, I changed the name of my second doll because his "personality" has changed over the years along with the aesthetic that is planned for him, and my poor girl is without a name! I can't find anything that jumps out as suiting her, but it could be that I just haven't spent a lot of time with her or her character yet. I'm hoping that once I settle on a more permanent set of eyes and wig that a name will come to me. I can only hope :/

    5. My doll that arrived in February still doesn't have a name that sticks. At first I called her Luna, but I quickly realized that doesn't fit her. Then her name was Lyanna, but every time I looked at her I felt that she definitely wasn't a Lyanna. So now I just call her by her sculpt name again.. Maybe once her new wig and outfit come in I can finally come up with a name that will stick :).

    6. LMAO my first doll! He arrived March 4, 2013. He was a sort of 'character' doll so he came with the name "The Marauder" (his sculpt name is Kagel... he's a Soul Doll). I've managed to get a name for every doll since him (some kept their original names or a variant of their sculpt name - their choice not mine O_o) but he flat out won't accept any I pick and has yet to cough one up for me. I call him "M" usually just as a way to refer to him.... I am almost afraid he's gonna not go with anything else lol. He has a definite character though, an English lord who inherited a title he had not ever imagined getting (son of a second son aka 4th down the line). He even has a distant relative he is guardian of (she named herself in an instant lol). But he won't give me any kind of a name... the one he came with has become what he was known as while he worked as one of the Kings men (spy). I worked that in right away. But his given, family or lands names.... Nope nothing LOL.

At the rate things go... he may never have a 'proper' name. Just his 'pirate days moniker' & "M" lol.

    7. I once read a story that had an inuit type character in it. She was something of an outcast in her own group/family and they used her w/o mercy.. the would not even give her the honor of a name... so she was called Kiin (pronounced i think like 'key-in' if I recall... it had a pronunciation key in the book lol)

But I think any language has a way to refer to someone without deigning them with the respect of a name... even i English we will say a person is 'no-one' or 'nobody'. And I can see how sometimes it might work becoming an actual name... Saddly my guy does have one but he refuses to share cuz part of his character was the fact that he lived so long hiding his identity... and now he won't even tell me! The rotter ><

    8. I have the hardest time naming my dolls. A few of them just came to me, but a lot I call by their sculpt name. It's not that I have no imagination, but I do have a serious short-term memory problem, and I have named them and then forgotten their name.

    9. It took me under two weeks to figure out some names. I find it easiest to have them on a talk show in your head. pretend they're talking to someone you look up to or watch a lot. Example; say they're a guest on the game grumps. What would they talk about? And how would the others refer to them?

    10. Perhaps that's why I don't really rename a lot of mine. I don't really build up characters for mine. Never thought about that. I don't mind calling them the sculpt name most of the time, but I bought the new DZ BBs. I have a feeling I'm not going to want to call my little girl Hal. :)

    11. I have two iplehouse KIDs who are still nameless. I've had them since September :(

    12. nearly 3 years on and my first still nameless boy has been showing signs of accepting a name!... Still not sure if Heath fits but ... *crosses fingers* maybe? ... I kinda like it.

    13. I thought I would have absolutely no problems with naming my doll. I had created a character for her before she even arrived! I had all of her clothes, accessories, hair and eyes bought before she arrived. I can't even describe how awkward it was when she came and the name didn't fit at all! It took me a month to figure out what character she truly was. Now she has an entirely new name and character but the entire process was extremely frustrating!

    14. I don't even have any of my dolls yet but I find it really easy to name them/make their personalities! The hard part is finding sculpts that fit the character.

    15. I've grown less concerned with naming my dolls the longer I've been in the hobby. More often than not, I find myself referring to them as their sculpt/company, even for the ones that have names.

Maybe it's because the names I chose eight or so years ago don't seem to fit anymore. Or perhaps it's because I tend to see them as an outlet for artistic expression, rather than as the embodiment of any particular character.

    16. Cyrus has gone through... 5 names before I settled on this one.

When I bought him, I didn't really know what to do with him, so he assumed the name "Shouta Kisa" as a placeholder. After that, he went by "Shou", shortened form of Shouta, and also the name of the Isul doll I no longer have. That name didn't really work so I chose "Rigel" afterwards. I would've stayed with Rigel if it weren't for the fact that it also meant "foot" in Arabic... I thought I had it when I chose "Ivan", but I forgot that's what I named my Build-a-bear.

Absolutely out of options at this point, I jokingly referred to him as"footbag" until I handed the naming job to my mother. She suggested Cyrus and said it sounds cute, and that name really clicked for him, being a sleepy head who hates the sun(irony). Now he's even more special to me!

Stella and Celeste's names took me, I don't know, seconds? I just thought of the story to give them, then gave them names that I thought fit their background. Even though they don't have a deep history like Cyrus did, I still put in the effort of keeping the celestial theme consistent with his. For me, female names are the easiest to come up with, but it may be because I like girls lol.

    17. Heh, Shouta Kisa. ;)

Did you mean to have two Animal Crossing names? (Cyrus and Celeste) I love the name Cyrus for your character.
And "foot" is really unfortunate lol.

    18. Awh nah, I never really thought of it that way (And my Celeste is a bunny, as opposed to AC's cutie owl LOL). Isn't it though? At least his nickname is "Riri", a small reminder that he was once named after a body part.

And hush, you read nothing, move along~ :eusa_sile

    19. I've had difficulties naming dolls/heads since the beginning of 2015.
Though I have a list of more than 30 names, none of them have been of any use to me this year.
Everytime a doll/head has needed naming, I've had to surf the web for hours just to pick one. And for some unknown reason, my Venitu (presently faceless) has been coming up in my mind as 'duck'/'ducky'.:nowords:

    20. It took me around two years to figure out names for my dolls, since I couldn't find the right names for them!
