the NICEST things people do or say

Sep 2, 2009

    1. My mum is usually really negative and says that I need to grow up and stop playing with dolls. And three days ago when I got Lili she said that she was cute and that she needed a friend cause she looked lonely on her shelf!

    2. Close to three years ago when I got my first doll, I needed to go into the house to get something and I had to leave Alice, my first doll, out in the fenced in backyard. I didn't have anywhere to really set her though so my mom decided to be nice and said "let me have her" and so I let her hold her. I came back to her holding her like a baby and walking around in the garden lol. She never showed interest in my doll before and it made me so very happy to see my mom do that. She does not totally approve of my doll hobby, nor does my dad, but sometimes they both surprise me. My sister didn't really like BJD either...until one December when I got my fourth doll Maria, a Dreaming Doll Little Elva Ryuna. Now my sister has just about as many dolls as me. Maria was the turning point for her...I converted someone in my family ROFL.

    3. I have a Doll Leaves Xavor head sculpt that I've had for a while now and finally bought a used body here to go with him so I decided to repaint his face. I wound up taking the head to work (because I work at a gamestore that basically lets me do whatever I want so long as I still work too lol) and while I was there I was able to work on his eyelashes and getting his eyes set in and making his new wig and such.
There's a boy who often comes into the store (I think he has a crush on me LOL) and he brought his little sister who looks to be somewhere between 10-12 with him that time and she was just transfixed on the head the whole time they were there. She eventually spoke up and told me how amazingly beautiful it was! It was pretty cute :3

    4. there was one random person that commented in my instagram... "Wow. i love him. he looks so real." then other say that he's really cute and they want to have one. so basically, the best thing here is that, these dolls piqued the interests of non bjd lovers and that made me happy

    5. It's sometimes exciting when we are on a doll outing and a group of tourists pass by our doll group after we set them up. The group starts to snap pictures of them with cellphones and cameras. Feels like dolly celebrities for a moment :)

    6. My mom is so supportive and awesome with this hobby...Yesterday she was out shopping and remembered I was almost out of a certain fabric and not only did she get the last of that fabric, but she and the ladies at the craft store found a very similar one AND material so I can practice making shoes (I've been trying to make shoes for my RS Yo-SD) and even brought an extra remnent cause she thought I could make something cute out of it. >w< I love her a lot.

    7. My mum loves my dolls and adores hearing about them and their stories. She helped me pay for Sannan's body after hearing his backstory and liking it, and gave him a little chair to match ^^
There was also a time where I was at an impromptu meet in London, sitting at the fountain in Piccadilly Circus. A mother and daughter sit next to me, and the little girl starts squeeing over seeing Kaysar (Dollinian Tiny) ^^ I allowed her to hold him, she kept stroking his hair - he has a mohawk, she adored it, was saying he is cuter than her barbie.
I do also recall a lot of people coming over and photographing the dolls at a meet I attended when we were walking through London's China Town, even people working in the restaurants were coming over with their camera phones to take pictures of them.

On the opposite side, my father doesn't like them (thinks they are too expensive) and my step mother thinks they are creepy (and requests something to be put in their heads so they don't get possessed by ghosts). My step sister likes them though, she has a photo in her room of her posed with Fiyanggu (DZ Cloud). It really bothers my step mother though, she really really hates Fiyanggu.

    8. All of these stories are giving me the warm fuzzies hardcore, what a nice idea for a thread!!:aheartbea

    9. well I once had somebody say who's that cute guy holding the really big doll, (it was an SD holding a Yosd but you couldn't see the joints on the larger doll just the smaller one, and he had on bulky clothes) when I said they were both dolls they were like O.o omg no way... idk if it'd fit in the nice category but I got a laugh from it

    10. I don't take my doll out in public yet (still getting over being self conscious), but my boyfriend has been really really supportive throughout my interest in this hobby. When I first told him, I was afraid he was going to think I was a weirdo, but he just thinks it's great I've taken an interest in something. He even asks questions about her when he knows I'm attempting to make them clothes or find some doll-sized thrift store furniture. I think it's really sweet of him and it's definitely helping me come out of my shell around others when it comes to my hobbies :)

    11. My friend once asked me if he could take photos of my dolls because they were pretty and BJDs changed his views on dolls, he thinks that theyre awesome now. He also notifies me when he finds small props for my dolls when he travels. Also my mom, she says she might even buy one for herself. :D

    12. The nicest things for this hobby must be receiving compliments on my dolls; like they look cute or their style is so cool, etc... That's all I want to hear and am already satisfied with that! Proud of my dolls!!!

    13. There is once a stranger said that my doll looks very detailed and handsome ^^v

    14. My aunt is making a dress for my girl. I'm super excited :dance

    15. My husband, who hates dolls, is so supportive of my hobby. He calls all the dolls by their names, holds them, comes up with cool ideas for them, goes with me to DDE, takes photographs of my dolls and comes up with fun photo ideas. He makes a huge effort to be invested in the hobby, even just a little, because he knows it means so much to me. He has also helped me buy dolls and he has bought them clothes and wigs, too. He's even agreed to help me build a fairy garden for the tinies! Love him!

    16. My sister, who I used to fight with a lot, though we have made up over the past few years, crocheted a hat and scarf for one of my dolls, and it fit perfectly. What was funny was she acted like it fitting was just a coincidence, but it was as if she measured the doll's head exactly. I don't mind if she did take the doll to measure, since I trust her and the doll was made of vinyl so a bit less fragile. And she just made it randomly one day, for me, even though she thinks my hobby is a bit weird, AND our relationship didn't use to be that positive. It made me so happy!

    17. When my in-laws give my dolls clothes and wigs. :)

    18. I've had numerous compliments and questions from total strangers on my dolls, and even on my fearlessness for taking them out in public with me. Sure, there have been some negative reactions too, but I find that outdoor photos are worth the effort; it's impossible for me to get good lighting in any of the places I've lived. But I think my favorite, and the most meaningful things done for me, have been the gifts from family and friends.

Before I bought any actual BJDs, I tried Pullips. My family was less than supportive of my bizarre swing in tastes (I've never been one for dolls, or cute things that aren't plush or a little on the strange/creepy side), and even less so of my willingness to spend $100+ on a doll that wasn't a "well-recognized" brand, such as American Girl or Madame Alexander. (I'm fairly certain they lay in bed at night, praying for an answer as to why they ended up with such a curious and eccentric child ) Seven of Pullip and her friends later, the resin monsters came along and they were a bit more used to it, but they still set down a relative price limit on my first, just as they had with Pullip. I don't think that they truly grasp just how much you have to pay to own a Soom or an Iplehouse, even secondhand (Unless you're infinitely vigilant and lucky), despite many patient explanations on my part. When I opened my Absolem (Leekeworld Arianna) from DenverDoll, my father happened to be in the vicinity, got a glimpse of her pricetag, and remarked on how dreadfully costly she was. I don't think the words,"Many of my dream dolls are in the $400-$500 vicinity, and in the $600s at the highest," have quite sunk in.

So imagine my surprise when I open my Christmas gifts and find not only a small collection of doll clothes and accessories I had placed on my little list (Not expecting to actually receive), but a Mirodoll Thunder as well! Unfortunately he was not to my tastes and was rehomed about a week ago, but the gesture was very much appreciated from my end. This year for my birthday, I received a PukiPuki Ante, whom I do adore. The very last thing I've ever expected to get as a gift is a BJD, but the tale does not end here...

My two closest friends are extraordinarily different individuals, and yet both take an interest in my dolls. R1VET, who is happily here on DoA, bought me both a project doll and gave me a Dollshe Husky head that came with a Hound she won off of "Evilbay". She has even helped me to acquire a dream part of mine- Soom Heliot hooves- and is very patient about payment.

My other comrade- let's call him SeptemberSoiree- has made one of my MSDs her very own personalized wa-lolita kimono dress, as well as allowed her to borrow a Hujoo body from a doll that he purchased. To be fair, I've been kind of an enabler- I gave him $100 to put towards a girl who was perfect for one of his character designs, and I actually bought him another girl, not knowing for sure whether he owned one or not. But still, there is absolutely nothing that said he had to pay me back or regift me in any way. I did these things because I was excited over his interest in the hobby, and because he is such a close friend. Plus, he was the one who started it. He found a battered old Taeyang on Ebay a couple years before, fixed him up, and gave him to me for 'birthdaymas'. It was, and still is, probably the best physical gift I've ever received, and the closest I've ever come to crying for joy over a possession.

I would like to pass some of that same kind of generosity and well-meaning along to the rest of the hobby, albeit in smaller ways more often than larger ones (Because my wallet dies every time a new piece of resin comes home), though it doesn't always come across from such a prickly and 'odd fish' of a bloke as myself. It's really lovely to read about so much positivity for a change. I hope that this thread is able to continue until they have to close it down and start a new one!

    19. One of my mom's friends just loved my doll and said he was very pretty^^ but she thought he was a girl. Oh well, he did have a long wig on.

    20. The nicest thing anyone has ever done is buy me a doll. My best friend absolutely HATES dolls. They scare her. Especially bjds with their big eyes and wigs (she's terrified of wigs). But she knew how much I wanted a bjd and she bought one for me for Christmas. As much as she hates the doll, she looked at it when she came to visit and very carefully touched her little hand (like she was seeing if she could pet a velociraptor, seriously). It was the most amazing thing to ever happen, and I will treasure my little Emily for the rest of my life.
