This going too far? [ Dollfie robot? ]

Dec 7, 2009

    1. I'll admit it's a little scary to see it moving after..well not seeing any of them moving but the more I watched it the more I thought it was just adorable! I think it would be cool to have them move, I don't think it's going to far.

    2. I think that's about the most fantastic thing I've seen all week!
I wanna see the robotics and how it's programmed, I would love to try and design clothes and dances for it, it sounds like so much fun!

    3. I wouldn't say it's going too far at all, just an interesting adaptation of something not originally designed to work that way. The movement is creepily jerky, though-- it hits the Uncanny Valley for me. So: the idea is neat, but the execution of said idea disturbs me to watch.

    4. That was the coolest thing! It makes me wanna watch Angelic Layer all over again. Now if only game companies would start working on it....:XD:

    5. How is this any different, other than in technology advance, to a pull string doll that says momma?
I love the idea and find this amazing!

    6. It's pretty neat I think... I mean, it's really no different than seeing something like those robo-sapiens and other robot toys kids play with. What makes this scarier? Is it cuz it's a dollfie, a form we already know? is it that they normally arent seen like this?

I want to see more like this honestly.... maybe a mecha musume type one

    7. I'm not sure how I'd react if I saw it in person, but it definitely looks cool to me. I don't think it's going to far, though. To me it's just like the difference between something 2D versus something 3D =/

    8. I love it, it is fun and cleaver. I want one.

    9. I find this rather awesome. At first it startled me though.. but I looked up more videos, and she does various dances. That's pretty cool if you ask me. :3

    10. I saw this too, a few days ago! I mean, I don't think it 'creepy' per se, but I do still have a problem with it.

In my opinion, every ABJD have two aspects to them - the "bonding aspect", and the "modding aspect".

The "Bonding Aspect" has to do with the the emotional bonds created between doll and owner. An owner is supposed to love their doll more than anyone else. Other people may see their doll as 'off-the-wall-freaky', but the owner sees their doll as the best thing ever. It involves caring about every aspect of the doll as you would a child. Buying/making them clothes, creating stories, taking them around with you. We doll owners treat them like works of art, models, and children all at the same time! We buy them all sorts of thing to take care of their bodies, too.

The "Modding Aspect" is the other half of the spectrum. It's the physical part of owning a doll; the part where we modify the doll in any way we choose. We may open eyes more, make the nose longer, combine the sexes, change the face-ups. All this is part of how we modify our dolls. It doesn't deal too much with emotion until the finished product is complete, and we can hold our dolls again.

To me, for a good relationship between doll and owner, we need a 50/50 balance between the two. Or, to be more accurate, the Modding aspect should never overpower the Bonding aspect. Because not everyone wants to modify their doll to extremes, it's ok if the bonding side is greater.

But I think the dancing dollfie seems like an example of when the Modding aspect overpowers. I mean, yeah, it's innovative and all. But, I for one hope it doesn't start a trend. Dolls like these are meant to be graceful, and I think getting into making the doll move sort of takes away that gracefulness. If you see the video, you can see how the movements are clumsy and odd. I don't understand the idea of doing this - I mean, making them actually move would be cool, but they're not so great. I think if they made the movement less awkward and clumsy, I'd be more into it, but I don't see this catching on.

    11. Now, if they could do it awesomely like Angelic Layer - that would be pretty sweet!

    12. I think it's cute. Really, only the face and hands are Dollfie. The rest of it is a different mechanical something.

    13. I think it's a riot! I don't have any desire to run out and make one as my dolls are more for costume design/imaginary play, but I don't see how this customization is any different than a face up etc. That said, she does travel the uncanny valley when she starts to walk.

    14. I think she's a riot too. I think she's way too unrealistic to even approach the freeway exit to Uncanny Valley, but I love to watch things like this. Things People Make With Stuff.

Wait, wait, wait a minute -- so a 50/50 balance is needed, so it's not OK if somebody prefers the Modding side more than 50 - but it is OK if the Bonding side is greater than 50? :? By definition, you can't have a 50/50 balance if either side goes over 50.

There is also the basic fact that a lot of owners do NOT have the whole Bonding thing with their dolls, at all. Some people just don't play like you do. This [pardon the mixed metaphor] totally shoots your 50-50 theory in the foot right out of the gate.

But even if we do assume everyone has the emotional bond-- there are also a ton of people who bond through modding. As pertains to the Dancing Robo-Dollfie, what makes you think that her owner hasn't totally bonded in that deep emotional way with her, because she's finally been done in the exact way that he's been wanting? Why can't that owner possibly be happy with his dollfie, just because "she's not graceful enough and all dolls have to be graceful"? How is this modification different from any other tattoo, elf-ear or nosejob you put on a doll to make it your very own?

    15. totally hat's off to the work involved to make a doll move. The feet were altered for balance but the hand movements are pretty cool. I also am a dork and I don't think it would be too much more than a novelty, unless it was toward an end, saying used to teach children or as part of a resin puppet show. I think it is really amazing. If it were a Tiny dollti I would buy one LOL

    16. I see what you mean. It's just that sometimes, I think people get carried away with things. And I thought this was getting a little too carried away.

    17. I personally don't see how anyone can get too carried away with creativity like this. As long as it is not hurting someone I think it is awesome!
I believe the owner of that doll has poured love and time into it and had a blast doing it. ^^

    18. Well, I think it's adorable, but also incredibly creepy and want it nowhere near me, ever. A lot of non-robotic normal dolls creep me out, however.
I think that if that is what the doll owner wanted.. it's good for them. It's very creative and entertaining, if nothing else! People can do whatever they want with their dolls. It's their time and money. I just don't see how doing this is any different than any other modification.
      To each their own!

    19. Am I the only one who looked at that and thought, "Wow -- I wonder how they stabilized her -- if she keeps dancing she's going to faceplant!"

Sometimes my robotics-loving side and my doll-loving side just don't understand each other...

      I think that's fantastic!

    20. Somehow, Sony or Apple will do it, and they'll cost us 20 grand!
