This going too far? [ Dollfie robot? ]

Dec 7, 2009

    1. I've been wanting to do something similar since before I even had a doll. Then again, I also have interests in AI and robotics, so I guess it would only be a natural progression for me.

    2. This is pretty cool, I must say. It's not something I would do to a doll I owned, but it's pretty damn awesome to think someone put forth the creativity and time to mod their doll in this fashion. In the end, that's the angle you should look at it from...from the angle of creativity, ingenuity and just plain "wow" factor. Put aside what you think a BJD or Dollfie is "supposed to do"...Remember....There is no "Great Book of Rules on What A Dollfie or BJD Is or Isn't Supposed to Do"...Think about the effort the dolls owner put forth and how proud that person must be about what they managed to accomplish...Something (lets be honest here) every BJD owner has daydreamed about...Their doll in motion:)

    3. Ithink it'd be very creative to have your doll move. Especially if you made them move a certain way that compliments their character (such as an artist doll to be able to move his arm like he's painting, a musician looking like he can play an instrument. a dancer..dancing, haha).

    4. The most I would get out of that would be a doll bringing a tea cup to his lips... XD

    5. haha! Thatwould be adorable though! <3

    6. That was actually really amazing. I wish I had one. could you picture moving bjds?

    7. If I do get started on robotic BJDs, one of my first projects will just be to have the head look up and down, and from side to side. After that will be the programming for her to detect movement and to follow it around the room with her gaze.

      ...
Yes, I like freaking people out from time to time ^.^

    8. It's partly creepy and partly cool. I say creepy because I can just imagine it going off in the middle of the night and giving someone with a doll complex a heart attack.

I love how she has the jitters like she's had one too many espressos. :)

    9. In my opinion it's a great idea. I saw more videos with that dollie dancing and I'm really impressed. Someone had to love that doll so much, that wanted it to imitate an alive moving human.

I really like the idea, if I had such skills I would try to do something similar on my own.

    10. Japan truly is the place of most curious gadgets. *shaking head* I wouldn't mind my dolls moving - as long as I knew that it was robotics and not my mind going bonkers. ;)

    11. I think it'd b pretty cool, really,but I don't think I'd pay for it.

I think the reason why this seems to be going too far for some may be the whole "Uncanny valley" hypothesis. When something is too close to humanity that isn't human, it creeps some people out. The dolls are far enough away, but when they move? That could easily put that in that category for some.

When I was on vacation, there was a street performer who dressed as a soldier and covered himself in white paint. He had a kazoo hidden in his mouth, and would make repetitive, jerky moves like a robot, while making robotic motion whirly-gig sounds with the kazoo. A little boy, not knowing he was human, was absolutely terrified of him. He wouldn't stop crying. That's just the effect of something being too human has on some people.

    12. Is this going too far? NO!
It is an awesome concept and I would love it if my doll is able to move!

As for the "Uncanny Valley" hypothesis, I don't feel that this fall into that category. I'd be extremely digusted if I see one of those 'human sushi' though.

    13. I honestly would be a little creeped out if any of my dolls could move by themselves. I've always loved dolls since I was very young (barbie, bratz, polly pocket) but seeing them move would probably just send me over the edge. xD

    14. Oh god, I love this! simply breathing dolls are great, but this is even more wonderful. Hmmm <wonders if she could make Lytho drink cups of tea or glasses of wine with a small robotic arm>

    15. That video is cool! I'd love to own that girl having her stand there slamming her guitar and be amazed at her moves every single time *o*

If only all of my boys could move around it would be awesome! <3

    16. Neat, after seeing the video posted by the OP, I got to clicking on youtube...It's amazing all the movements the person can get the doll to do! Like this youtube video... the movements are really smooth too!
I don't think that's going to far, I think that's really creative and awesome! Just imagine all the work that went into it. What a neat idea.

    17. i think it look really cool. I am amazed at what ppl can do!
I guess it would be a bit freaky if my doll started moving by it self...
I can imagine that those who are a bit freaked by BJDs would be even more freaked.

    18. >.< i would be scared for it to turn on during the night, but still cute!

    19. My goodness that's just so cool. If only you could program it to move more than just a simple repetitive motion... It could walk and stuff. My god that'd be so cool

    20. hmmm...I'm not entirely sure what my opinion on this is...I kind of like it, but at the same time I think it's creepy...I don't know...
