    1. It doesn't really bother me. I guess I've just seen many come into knowing BJDs through different avenues. I was introduced to them through my interest in Takara Jenny, which led to me customizing Volks Dollfie, and finding out about Volks' BJD Ian (from 2000)! I never did obtain the exclusive Ian, but she led me into the world of ABJDs. Ian also led me to read manga by Kei Toume and get the artbook that featured the doll characrer Ian, Hyakkei.

    2. Actually, knowing myself, I thought it would bother me. Then I went to Ohayocon. I remember reading this topic and laughing because I'd been to a few cons with my dollies and nobody ever said 'those anime dolls'. As soon as I stepped into the convention center in Columbus with my girl in my arms someone exclaimed 'Hey, she's got one of those anime dolls!!!' I was about to bust out laughing because I remembered reading this topic and thinking what I did! It really didn't bother me at all.

    3. My co workers recently saw manga for the first time and asked if my dolls were from the manga. I laughed and found it weird, but I understand that the dolls do look similar. Eye shapes and all that. At least the more stylized ones do, the more realistic ones not so much, unless they looked at a western comic and saw the similarities.

I can see them making the association, they do look alike. Same asian style put into them, type of thing.

    4. I'm not into anime or really anything else that would classify me as such, so it is kind of weird when people call my dolls "anime dolls", but I just chalk it up to lack of knowledge... it doesn't bother me or anything, it's just kind of amusing considering I've never read a single anime in my life. :)

...er...or would that be watched? Does anime also count as the books since it's short for animation...?

      ...Yeah, see, total stupidity.

      HA... it's manga, right?

      Okay, done.

    5. It doesn't bother me. I admire the artistic abilities and quality of precision exacted by most Asian artisans. I have been in doll competitions with Japanese artists of porcelain dolls and I can say they were outstanding. So it's not a surprise or disappointment that they have come up with and excelled with this concept.

    6. The anime connection doesn't bother me much - after all, it is how I first found ABJDs myself. I will admit sometimes it makes me sigh in irritation as I go into the "there's more to it than that" but generally I don't let it get me too badly.

    7. It doesn't bother me, just because ~I~ know my boys aren't related to anime in any way. I mean, yeah, my aunt just laughs and says 'Oh, thats one of her anime dolls' because she's not really interested enough to want to listen when I explain it. I mean, yeah, I like anime and have watched it for years, but I didn't find BJD's through that.

I have never been to a con or anything. I found BJD's through a friend of mine who had one, and he was fantabulous, and then I put it away as one of those things I'd never afford. Then another friend, entirely unrelated to the first, had some and I got the idea back out.

But it was never related to anime, even if they still look similar with the eyes and the facial shapes.

    8. It doesnt bother me at all...i dont mind the connection. My father in law insists on calling my lot 'those alien dolls' every time he sees them...Dunno where he gets that from, but hey its his oppinion so hes entitled to say whatever he wants.

Its just people that dont have all the right information that make that assumption, probably because they have either not seen a bjd in person before or just not listened to what they have been told about bjds.

    9. LOL. Maybe it's the big eyes...

    10. I'm kinda late, but I've never had someone talk to me about BJD and call them that. It would make me very upset if they did though. They look nothing like anime characters in the sense that the large majority of dolls that I've seen aren't "cosplaying" or anything like that. I've only seen the dolls in movies, anyways. >.>

Plus... I've been looking a Korean dolls lately. I'm touchy on asian generalizations...=\ So connection with Japanese = BAD for me...

    11. A friend of my brother did at one time ask if my doll was a: Hentai doll
He meant manga/anime doll, but ... well, he's a teenage boy.
It never bothered me, allthough we did tease him about his vieuwing habits.

    12. I bothers me somewhat, but mainly only in principle. As a parallel, does liking golf mean that you must also like listening to bagpipes? They're both Scottish, after all, and the assumption, if repeated over and over ad nauseum would be just as annoying. I'm not especially into anime, though there are a few that I like. I think part of my irritation is due to feeling like I'm being hit over the head with anime any time I bring her out. And if you're not really all that into something, to meet with a barrage of it can be frustrating. I found BJDs through looking for other dolls, of the antique French porcelain variety. They look like updated, grown up versions of the dolls I used to long for as a child (and are in about the same price range. Go figure.)

    13. I find the whole connection fascinating. Actually, the anime connection has helped explain the dolls to my friends who are familiar with anime/manga. I am a huge movie/animation fan so I have seen some anime (Vampire Hunter D, Princess Mononoke [forgive any spelling mistakes!]) before I discovered ABJDs. I am also a fan of the Japanese drummers, KODO and I love the Japanese esthetic. Finally, I love the whole gothic thing and that's what first drew me into the dolls; those beautiful vampire dolls and their cool clothes. Since I have been into the dolls I've gotten more interested in manga and all things Asian.

    14. It doesn't bother me at all. I love anime, and when I first introduced to the doll by someone bringing them into a bookstore i was shopping at... I fell in love because they reminded me of a 3D version of an amime character. In fact I commissioned a "bleach" shinigami kimono for mine so he can 'cosplay' as Byakuya from Bleach.

I can't get offended when people compare them to anime characters, or when they call my HE a she.

at least those gaffes are followed by compliments about how beautiful they are. how can you be mad at that?

    15. No, don't really bother me cos I like anime. And I rather want ppl to associate the dolls with anime than with Japanese sex dolls :sweat
And, aren't they originally "anime dolls"?

    16. I'm only a bit bothered, but not much since my BJD love started because of experiences with Japanese culture. I had seen owner pictures of dolls before but started to love them after seeing them in a Volks store in Tokyo. My first doll was a Dollfie Dream which are made like anime characters. The original character of Shima, my doll, was first drawn as an anime character by me, too. And I like anime and manga, cosplay and all of these things, so... no, I'm not really bothered but I tell people that they are no "anime dolls" :)

    17. It does bother me, but I do understand that people who aren't into BJDs can make that connection. To people who don't know anime, they can't really tell the difference, and to people who do know anime, there are some similarities between BJDs and anime, I guess. Making a connection is alright, but I do find it annoying if someone would refer to it as "those anime dolls".

    18. It really really bothers me, unless the doll is indeed cosplaying a charicter...last convention I was at my gal was actually called "an anime barbie" -_____________________- they didn't say it to my face, but THAT didn't sit well with my mind...............

    19. No, the origingal Ball-jointed-doll came from Germany. Then came the VOLKS 4 sisters, which were not anime.

    20. it only bugs me because the people who DO make the connection usually throw naruto into the mix... which i can't stand >_____< and it's kind of ridiculous how many random people say it.

perfect example: random lady in a restaurant (during one of our meet-ups) saying "are those anime dolls? my nephew LOVES naruto"
