Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. 1. i have to admit before i knew abotu BJD's i thought they were just dolls of anime characters. I obviously know more about them now and i've since fallen out of being an anime fan, but i can see the connection some people would make.
I think this is mostly because anime and BJD's are almost strictly japanese/Korean. Yes there are outside doll makers and outside anime makers but asia is where it started. You can see the influence of anime onthe dolls with the big eyes, androgynous males, small mouths, colourful hair and so on. However i think it's a huge steriotype considering you get a lot of those same features in Jrock/jpop stars too.
Mostly i just think people don't know enough about the dolls so they will slap it with whatever they are familar with.
What bothers me isn't the anime thing but when people turn thier dolls into anime characters or only get dolls to make them into thier most beloved anime character, cosplay for them is great and i understand wanting a figure of yoru anime character but the dolls have so much life and personality to them it's just a waste to be uncreative with them and just stick them with someone else's character design. Not as bad when people make them Jrock/jpop stars, at least they are based on real people but it's still pretty dull and unoriginal.
However i can stand the anime dolls and people mistaking them for anime...what i really hate is people thinking they are a waste of money.

    2. It doesn't really bother me, when someone points out my dolls look like manga characters. Afterall, they were first inspired by anime (I think the first dollfies were released by Volks, which is famous for its figures). Of course, there are some molds which are clearly more human-like than cartoonesque... But for most of them, it isn't so.
Once during a doll convention a fellow expositioner stated that our MSDs looked like dolls 'for pedophiles'. She didn't mean to offend us (or at least I hope so), but that bugged me QUITE a lot.
I can bear someone saying my boy looks like he is some sort of Naruto's or *insert any random emo singer name here*'s clone. But some sort of perverted sexual fetish? That's really plain rude... not to mention, stupid.

    3. Arg....
That's horrible! I don't like that either, it's one thing to call them [those anime dolls] but saying that MSD's looked like dolls for pedophiles?
      That is quite rude....

    4. I love anime and manga but everytime someone sees my dolls they ask "Is that a character from one of those anime's" I always say no politely but it bothers me. Sometimes I wonder about if people just don't think I'm creative enough to make up a character other times I just get annoyed because as much as I love anime neither of my dolls are meant to look like any character. I could have them cosplay but I usually choose not to because of the price of the clothes.

    5. I've known people to stare when I point out the doll's anitomical correctness and occasionally try and "check" but I've never heard them say that. It's not right. That implies that they think some of the doll owners are pedophiles. While this may be true about a few it's not true about most of us that I know of and I don't want to be grouped with pedophiles just cause of my hobbies. :(

    6. even though i am into anime, yes it does bother me.
people seem to be ignorant and automatically think anything remotely asian looking comes from an anime.

    7. I kinda like anime (not big things like Naruto, more like Rozen Maiden and Soul Eater. The most known anime that I like is Death Note and I try my hardest to avoid all the stuff 'fans' have done to it. I stick with the actual thing) so it's not that bad, but when someone says "Oh, she has one those dolls. She must be one of those crazy anime people who believes they're part of the story and sit in the dark talking to the computer screen with pictures of someone from someone else's mind."
And while there's nothing wrong with that, and I do like to sit in the dark, and while I do ocasionaly talk to the computer (I talk to everything) I'm not like that. And it's kinda annoying to be compared to that day in and day out.

    8. It doesn't bother me one bit. I found BJDs through an Anime Convention, I am an Anime Fan myself, and when someone sees something that looks remotely Anime in nature, they will connect the two, no matter if its right.

And even with the fact that most of the ones i am looking at aren't even japanese, still doesn't bother me cause i have a good few manga that are Korean based, so it kinda fits.

But yeah, doesn't bother me. I don't like it when someone throws a hissy fit because i didn't know something about their hobby, so its just rude to throw a hissy fit when someone doesn't know something about your hobby (especially one such as BJDs).

    9. The connection doesn't bother me in the slightest. The dolls are made in Asia, so they reflect Asian aesthetics, just like anime. Also, Volks does a lot of anime-based dolls, which of course would make people think, "Hey, these dolls have something to do with that anime stuff!" Plus, a lot of anime fans tend to make up their own characters, which I don't see as much regarding US/European/etc. shows. Thus, these people would be more likely to want a doll and customize it to look like a character.

    10. Given the lengths some people go to and the sheer effort it takes in order to customize certain dolls to look like their favorite anime characters, I find it somewhat offensive to broadly paint all such doll owners as uncreative, dull, and unoriginal.

    11. All I know is that the history of BJD started in Germany, not sure how the tradition jumped in Asia but since the style of almost everything is so anime like, I'm not even sure anymore but, I just see the dolls as works of creativity, not fan girl/boy merchandise.

    12. I'm an anime fanatic but I am not associating my dolls to look anime like or dress anime like. I do indeed get offended when people tell me she looks like 'one of those anime figurines' because it's like they're not getting what I'm intending for her at all. It's like when I wear a black shirt with blue flames and people come up to me going "SLIPKNOT RULES!!!". It's just a shirt with blue flames, though I may like Slipknot, that shirt has no real association with the band. Especially considering that the specific look I have for Nabi is REAL and not anime based, I feel it's wrong for people to make accusations like that.

    13. To be honest, it bothers me a lot to be lumped in with those obsessed with anime or asian culture just for liking BJDs. I have no problem with those who are into anime/asian culture, or thoses who got into BJDs from that, it's just that I don't really consider myself to be a part of that group.

It's fine if someone makes an honest assumption that I'm really big on asian pop culture, I'd just politely say that I just like to collect things from all around the world. But if they insist that I'm an otaku or tries to tell me who I am, then they're gonna get a beatdown. <_<

    14. If I knew I can make "anime"-like character myself using BJD, I would probably have done it long time ago...thankgoodness, I just knew BJD lately...if not, I could be in "financial" problem (~.~)'...

    15. I would have answered "And you look STUPID, but I wasn't going to point that out in front of all these people... but you did anyway."

      :roll

As for the OT? *shrug* Who cares? It's my doll, so it doesn't impact how I feel about him or what I do with him. When I carry Hajime around, I alwways hear how cool he is!:D

    16. Considering I don't read manga or watch anime, its surprising to me (because I know how easily wound up I am) that no it doesn't bother me... Maybe it's because I know they're wrong XD

    17. It doesn't bother me...I like all that stuff anyway

    18. So far I haven't met anyone who has even heard of BJDs before I talked about mine. If and when I meet people who connect anime and BJD I would find it interesting at the least.

    19. It really doesn't bother me if someone makes this connection - most of the time you see where it is coming from. In this case it is perhaps best to explain what BJDs are and where they originated - if the person is interested in the whole thing or if you are that eager to defend the dolls. Otherwise I'd just let it go ))

    20. It only bugs me a little bit...mainly because they are more complex than your average anime doll. I usually correct them and tell them what they really are. Too bad they are far too intimidated to say anything else about them... =3
