1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

    1. The connection between these wonderful dolls and anime bothers me A LOT. I've never been a huge fan of anime at all. Okay, I admit I like Pokemon, but that's because I was a huge fan of Pokemon when I was little. I also like some high-quality anime movies, if you know what I mean.

So, I get pretty annoyed when people connect MY dollies to anime. Especially as I don't even like big-eyed dolls or pointed thin noses. In fact all dolls that are on my wishlist look pretty realistic. If my dolls don't look like anime characters, why some people still connect them to anime?

    2. I don't mind the comparison myself. I'm not into anime, but I know a lot of people who really like it. If they're comparing my doll to something they like, it seems like a compliment.

    3. That pretty much sums up my opinion too. Maybe my skin is too thick, but, outside of those I know well, I don't really care what others think of me. Those who know me understand the dolls, and those who don't don't matter to me. But then I'm openly interested in a lot of things that people seem to think are restricted to the very socially inept and pimple faced. I play Dungeons and Dragons fer chirssake. So I've developed a pretty thick shell. The association with anime might not be to everyone's taste, but getting very upset about it just seems like wasted energy to me. If it's important to you that the association be corrected, then explain to those who make the mistake in a calm and mature fashion. If they still don't get it, then chalk them up to a hopeless cause and move on with your life.

    4. It doesn't bother me, the connection some see between the two. While I did partly descover dolls through anime conventions, I also did with Gothic and Lolita. I don't connect BJD's directly with anime or loli, although I know some do.

    5. I'm not particularly bothered by the association of dolls to anime to an extent since it was through anime fandom that I discovered dolls.

    6. I'm not bothered by it at all. Since most of the people who see my dolls/book are not into dolls or BJD community, knowing there is a connection between the dolls and anime/manga at least gives them a cultural reference re: the dolls, because almost everyone has heard of anime.

Then at least they realize these are "grown up dolls", not simply pretty porcelain or baby dolls, or barbies (I've had people say "Oh look at the big barbie!" before, which annoys me to no end). Then they can place them somewhere in that "Asian Pop Culture" genre.

So actually, I find the connection, even tenuous as it is, helpful in helping people understand the dolls. And I am not into anime even a little bit. I have absolutely no idea who any of the characters are, other than the really mainstream ones like Sailor Moon (and I've never seen any of that even).

And as the above members have posted- I honestly am not too concerned what people think about what I do. :)

    7. I only mind if a doll has a more realistic look, my dolls however are quite unreal, with the big eyes and all. the style they have should be slightly anime-ish, I like the sort of dramatic look it has

    8. I am not bothered by it. I actually was in to anime since I was 5 ( I am a young 35 now heh) but I found the dolls by themselves not while looking for anime so I really dont relate the two.

But it does make sense alot of the people here on the board seem to like japanese culture, food anime, language etc so its only natural that bjds which look alot like the anime would figure in to it as well.

    9. No. They dont bug me. What really bugs me is when people connect bjd to the term "bj" and this bugs me as well

      me: do you like dolls
other person: you mean like barbie dolls?
me: no. barbie dolls are ugly. Do you like bjds?
other person: OOH YOU SAID A BAD WORD! IM TELLING THE TEACHER YOU SAID BJ!!
      me: bjd

    10. :XD: I laughed my head off..

Well, it doesn't bother me all that much. I do know some people associate anime with certain stereotypes and probably that's why some are bothered by the connection...

I just buy what I like, and watch what I like be it anime or anything ... Can't really be bothered about that. I might be bothered in the past when I was still a little caught up about how people think of me but now? Naaah.. :)

    11. I don't really mind a lot, But I usually correct people when they say so.
I can imagine how people connect them to Anime. :3

    12. I guess I can see why they are related to anime and gothloli, but I also like both of those things, so I don't mind them being a related topic. I hate it when people Assume, however, that I'm goth or whatever. I personally span out over many stereotypes and would prefer not to be held in just one.

    13. I'm not bothered by it at all. In fact, I learned of BJDs when going to an Anime convention. And I'm fond of Anime, but I don't really relate it to BJDs. My friends that have seen BJDs (only pics though) say, "She/he/it (-_-) looks like an Anime character I've seen before." I just shrug it off and tell them, "I don't think so." And the conversation has ended.

    14. No it doesn't bother me. Rozen Maiden is an anime..about ball-jointed dolls. Why would that be a problem? :)

Volks has also done a lot of anime collaborations (Chii, Sachiko Ogasawara and Yumi Fukuzawa, Shinku, Souseiseki and Suiseiseki, Suigintou, Hinaichigo) and they even release mini comics of the story arcs like the Tokyo Boys story so it makes complete sense to say that. As for all the realistic male dolls, they look just like something straight out of shonen ai mangas anyway :sweat

    15. My boyfriend made that connection the 1st time I mentioned BJD too.....
which I guess, shows where the relms of is mind usually are

I like to do my dolls up as my fave anime characters...so I'm quite pleased when they are recognised as the character I intended them to be :D

    16. It doesn't bother me much either. It's just kind of anoying to explain afterward and then they're all like ew creepy gross etc.etc.

or I think it would depend on how the person asks, like I know some people how purposefully try to be the antagonist and are like oh blahlbahlblslbsdlghls

      ::Sigh::

    17. No it doesn't really bother me, probably because I like anime. I didn't really get into this because of anime though.

Although I will correct them by saying that BJD is a totally different hobby altogether that just so happens to connect with anime/cosplay, since not ALL BJDs have anime like sculpts (best example I can think of is Unoa and some American BJDs, oh and the MNMs that are not anime-based)

So, while the 2 interests can overlap, it's not always the case

    18. It dosen't really bother me one way or the other when people, who are not familiar BID's, refer to my doll as 'the anime doll'. However, is dose bother me when people use the term to poke fun at them, and disrespect the people that love them.

    19. No it doesn't really bug me... I mean a lot of them seem to look like a 3D anime character anyways. The overall aesthetic is asian and most people associate that sort of thing with anime. I don't mind at all, I found these dolls through anime and conventions etc.

After being in the community for a while, I notice that these dolls are way more than anime or whatever... people come up with the most original and interesting characters and the styles that they make their dolls into are extremely varied. For the most part I see a lot of vampire and gothic dolls ^-^ that seems to be the biggest running trend.

I see why a lot of people might be offended if they are considered 'anime' dolls but for me it doesn't matter... there's more to it than anime but meh *shrugs*

    20. It doesn't really bother me. I'm not to fond of dolls with animetic features (like the huge square eyes and tiny noses). I love anime though....weird.
