1. Yes, it bothers me. Anime and dolls are not really connected, so I find it disturbing, when someone comes to me and asks: "Oh, this is an animedoll, isn't it?"
But I usually agree with the asker, 'cause I've become lazy on telling, what these dolls really are. :'D
I should really get rid of my lazyness... yeah.

2. I despise about 98.9% of anime (most of it is just not my cuppa), but considering it's history and whole volksblahblahthing I think it's alright. I've been to anime cons and I can see exactly why many posters wouldn't want the association but I think it's far better to the alternatives "creppy doll" etc.

3. I have to admit, I prefer it over 'dolls' said in a way that makes you think of barbies and the like :C
I call them B.J.D to avoid saying it. maybe I'll get used to it like I got used to 'anime-dolls' who knows ^^

4. Personally, I despise anime. Not for the stuff itself, but because of the obsessive freaks (offense meant) who've come to like it. The ones who dress up on a day-to-day basis as their anime favorites, talk about nothing BUT anime, masturbate to Inuyasha, claim to be a demon-wolf, etc. etc. etc...

Sorry, but I feel strongly on this subject.

I used to like anime. I was a fan of Cardcaptor Sakura, Evangelion, and some weird one called Cat Soup (funny as hell! Wish I could find it again...) I was also a BIG lover of manga, being an artist myself, wanting to draw comics ever since I was approximately 6 years old.

But the obsessed 12 year olds ruined it for me. Note, the obsessed ones. Hobbies are good! Anime is awesome! It's a fun hobby that people can share together and talk about, draw, and occasionally dress up as the characters for fun. I almost cosplayed once, there's nothing wrong with that!

It's just the super-obsessed ones that ruined it for me. The ones that created the name 'fangirl' and who now fawn over Twilight, too.

It was my thing. It was unique, it wasn't common. It's nice having something like that to yourself! Just when people started flashing it around, that bothered me. It became the "cool" geek thing.

I don't know. I still like and watch anime. My boyfriend has gotten me into Ghost in the Shell, and I'm getting him into some mangas.

But, anyways, the main point.

Anime dolls, yes, it bothers me. They're called that because essentially, all Japanese culture in the US is brought here through anime, including dolls. Plus, the dolls themselves have a very anime look. Big breasts, tiny figure, big heads, big eyes.

That's my rant. End. :X

5. I really have no problem with the connection. "Those anime dolls" is my usual description of my dolls to people who are just asking out of curiosity. Frankly, I've found most people I have encountered who use the term don't really care to know more about the variety of BJDs out there anyway. I could go on a long rant to those people, but with my collection (no realism whatsoever+ Volks) I think I'd just make myself look silly and make other people bored.

6. It's a niche hobby. The dolls primarily come from asia. The biggest off the beaten path export is anime. It's natural to assume there's a great overlap within those two communities.

7. The connection doesn't bother me, perhaps because I never got the reaction: 'those anime dolls'..
but I think it wouldn't bother me even then, maybe because I watch animé to.. ;)

8. I agree with what someone said earlier - that it's much better than being called 'creepy doll'.

That being said, I really couldn't care less about whatever connection(s) people want to make - if it's something I like then why would I care about others liking it too? Besides, I think BJDs are originally from anime (right?)...

I guess the bottom line is that people other than BJD collectors will NEVER understand!

9. It does rather bother me (even though I don't have a doll yet >.<) simply because it seems so tragically ignorant. I suppose I see BJDs as being such beautiful, unique dolls that it irritates me when people get so caught up in the stereotype of BJD owners as anime geeks that they can't look past that to see them as works of art, or unique characters.

Personally, I'm an anime fan. I've watched quite a bit of it, I go to one anime convention a year, and I cosplay when I do so. However, anime is not my life-- it's a hobby. I like to cosplay simply because I like to dress up (it's just like Halloween!), so it also bothers me when -I'm- labeled as just another crazy fangirl because of my interests. Just because a lot of anime fans are obsessive doesn't mean we all are, and just because a lot of BJDs turn into "anime dolls" doesn't mean all of them do.

I suppose I'm just bothered by people who are -that- narrow-minded.

Edit: I'd like to point out that I'm more likely to correct someone who says something like that rather than biting their head off. It irritates me, but I'd much rather peacefully correct someone than give them another reason to look at me like I'm insane.

10. I'll admit here that I DID use the "anime" term to help explain to my family what my dolls were. Afterwards, they instantly got it and now they are just "my dolls". It seemed to fit, however, because my dolls suited the description with huge eyes, ski jump nose, and a melon head. If I had a realistic doll, I probably wouldn't have made that connection. In the long run, any anime association does not bother me one bit. I love the artwork of anime/manga and I love the similar style of these dolls. I havn’t really heard derogatory anime/doll comments, but I’m typically less sensitive to that sort of thing and it flies right over my head.

11. It honestly doesn't bug me, because "anime dolls" actually sounds less creepy than many other things they could be associated with... Plus, in my case it's actually kind of a fair point; anime and manga has influenced the aesthetic of these dolls a lot.

What does bug me is people who automatically stereotype people based on their interests, and other people letting them do that. Many of the things I'm into carry negative stereotypes - anime, Star Trek, Dungeons & Dragons, etc. I'm not going to let anyone stop me enjoying the things I do, and if someone starts talking down about people belonging to those groups, I WILL go off on them. Yes, in some cases it may be accurate, but by making those kinds of assumptions, one is also attacking a large group of people who do not deserve that label. No one has the right to make you feel guilty for enjoying what you like.

12. It doesn't really bug me, I like Cosplay, Anime, J-Rock, Dolls and japanese cultur and I like to connect these fings, like sewing a j-rock cosplay for my doll or taking it to meetups.

Most people just dont know the difference, but if you explain it, they listen interested and the next time, they will not, that a BJD hasn't got anything to do with animes ^_^

Only if there are people like my mom, whom I have been trying to tell for years that my hobbys are japanese, not chinase… and she still doesn't know the difference… that really bugs me <<"

13. I answered "yes, quite a bit", I love some anime series, but it's stupid for people to cathegorize everyone in therir really strict vision of live.

Often I dress lolita style, and sometimes people that knows anime or manga told me that I dress lolita because I'm a anime-fanatic...even if I've never spoke about animation to them °_°'
Also I'm in Italy... people here are really close minded. For example if you like to listen to rock miusic (the word "rock" here are REALLY misundestranded... XD) people may think that you are satanic or related. It's the same ignorant connection beetween bjd and anime, or lolita and anime... that's why it annoy me a bit :)
I call it stereotype...

14. I find it fine when people relate BJDs to anime.
It's just a whole lot easier to explain them that way too. When explaining the dolls to friends, family or strangers I usually refer to them as anime too, or else if..people tend to think more on the lines of creepy porcelain dolls upgraded with joints xD (WHICH IS TEN WORSE THAN ANIME DOLL-i think) And the fact that i fear most porcelain dolls--from childhood exp-- doesn't make it any better XD
But when i say Anime doll, people think ooo that's not as bad. being 16 my school is an anime admired zone, everyone seems to be involved with it somehow and the idea of having a doll related to anime is pretty neat xD
Besides I'm sure by looking at some of the dolls , you can definelty tell some companies are influenced by anime when making the sculpts.

15. It doesn't bother me at all. They may not be directly related to anime, but anime fandom is often a gateway into BJD fandom, and there's a lot of crossover between the two.

I read a lot of manga and watch a lot of anime, as well as collecting anime figures, so I don't find the association offensive even if it's not exactly accurate.

16. I don't mind it because I understand a lot of people don't know the nuances of the culture and just basically assume anything from Asia is from Japan, hence it's anime. I don't mind it but I will make a correction and give a little blurb about the hobby. Sometimes they assume it because I happen to be wearing a Vampire Hunter D shirt or something a long those lines. I often see girls squealing in Japanese (when they have no idea what they're saying) but carrying the dolls at the same time so I can understand where the misconception comes from lol. It's not bad, just ignorance. An ignorance that can be very easily corrected and they learn something new! In fact, there are multiple resin hobbies! Ours just happens to be in the form of dolls.

Some people really just don't care and claim to have a true disdain for anime when they really just have a disdain for the Asian culture completely. This comes from watching too much anime lol. They assume that because there's so much of it that it permeates the eastern culture like a stinky fart in a crowded room. Those people aren't going to change so don't let it bother you. Shrug and walk away because there really isn't a point to wasting your breath.

17. I'll be honest and say I prefer the anime associations people make with this hobby than the collection of traditional porcelain & or other antique dolls... both of which I have always found quite stale and boring (french porcelain dolls in particular freak me out with their wide dead-eye stares.)

18. Yes it bothers me. I'm not an anime fan AT ALL and I really detest the connection that people make.

19. Well, IIRC Volks started them with a strong connection to Animé, so no, I don't object to the connection being made. And yeah, I like Animé & Manga too.

I got more important things to worry about than other people's attitudes... ;)

Phil.

20. it doesn't bother me actually...only when people think that my dollies are based on anime.
When i was young i loved watching anime's but i won't base my dolls on characters from anime, i want my dollies to be a little bit more realistic.
