1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

    1. I enjoy some anime shows so no, it doesn't really bother me. Although it's kind of weird that I noticed this post today, because I did see something earlier tonight that I immediately resented concerning peoples association with BJD's.There was a girl on the PeopleOfWalmart.com site with her BJD a while back really made me think twice about bringing my girl outside, lest someone connect her with me. I'm sure she's a lovely person and regularly nurses orphan kittens back to health etc., but she is not (visually) someone I'd like to be connected with. I have to deal with a number of stereotypes all day (primarily nerd, gamer, comic book geek, closeted bisexual, blonde so-i-must-be-dumb girl) and now I'm worried people will look at me and think "she's like that freaky looking chick on POW site!". I'm sure someone will call me shallow and I probably deserve it but really? I've got enough on my plate.

    2. I think as far as dolls are concerned, there seems to be a tendency where people who likes japanese anime and pop culture collect BJD/Blythes/Pullips. The "fashion dolls" being often composed by a completely different crowd of collectors.

It does bother me a bit because I do think that the assimilation might not be fair to those not into anime, but I kinda see where it does come from.

And I am more or less in the middle of it all because I do like anime and Jpop things to a certain extent, but I am really more drawn to the the fashion side of the dolls, and I do collect a bit of everything there is to collect dolly-wise

    3. It doesn't bother me any. = w = ;;

My first BJD is actually a young Fai D. Flourite from Tsubasa.
      Yeah, so what? I'm a fangirl. 8|

But as a lot of people said, I can see why it would bother people who don't necessarily like anime.

    4. No, it doesn't bother me. Even if I didn't like anime [which I do], it still wouldn't bother me. I know what I am, and I know what I'm not... and I'm secure in that.

These dolls & their scene also associates me with Lolita, which grosses me out. For that matter-- because I'm a female humanoid with an Italian surname, this associates me with the vile Gwen Stefani. So what? We all have similarities to things we hate. You just suck it up, and you get on with your life, and you worry about your own business.

    5. :whee:

I'm not an anime fan (unless is REALLY strange sci-fi anime. Anyone know any, let me know.)

Since I don't have my first doll as of yet, I don't know how I'll feel when that inevitably happens. I used to be a fan of anime and manga but that seems to have been a hobby I'm no longer interested in.

I think if someone says that once, I can leave it be and just correct them, but if they're insistent upon calling my (future) boy that I will get a little upset.

    6. I've always known the difference between BJDs and Anime, but I ran into them through a friend of mine, who, one day brought her boy to the anime club we attended. I fell in love with him, and knew that I'd get at least one of my own.

Since I've received mine, I've had them compared to anime a few times, but mostly people are just interested in them in general. My friends and I were stopped once at the movies to talk about them with a group. The girls in the group said they looked rather anime-esque, and we in turn noted that it was definitely a common assumption.

I LOVE anime, but my dolls are not from any of them. I might one day seek to make a character from and anime from one of them, but not now, they're my precious dolls, and moreso relate to my own characters.

Anyway, to answer the question, it doesn't bother me at all, but I definitely go on to explain the differences to people who make the assumption. ^^

    7. I am not really interested if others think my dolls are anime dolls or not. I would guess that DD and the PVC figures are more associated with anime than the resin ABJD. I have found that most people outside the hobby don't really make too many associations or remarks.
They find my toys pretty. ~Gus

    8. The way I see it is that if you've ever looked at manga book covers, you see the reason for the connection. Unfortunately or not, BJDs faces have the basic look of the manga characters. Sharp features, slim near perfect figures, the styles of hair. They don't look like your average westerner, do they? I expect that is part of the reason we love them so much. The tinies are the equivilant of "chibi" drawings.

    9. It doesnt really bother me haha
I myself am a fan of anime and manga and like BJDs too =)
There are quite alot of people who are into BJD and into Anime as well
And yeah, both have certain similarities like Big eyes and Sharp features and unrealistic hair styles and colours as a norm lol xD
      Fantasy fantasy~

    10. I discovered Super Dollfies and obitsu dolls in 2005, though I sold my anime collection in 2006. I have seen some bjds that have "anime" eyes, but most of the people I know that are into BJDS are not interested in anime.

    11. It doesn't bother me, some of my own collection holds "anime-style" dolls, they just happen to be who I picked. Really, someone else enjoying or assosiating my doll with something they have prior exposure to such as anime has little impact on my enjoyment.

I suppose my opinion may be skewered as alot of my old college class was heavily into anime and did indeed pick out similarites between anime and, well, anything they could make a connection to. Going on observation thus far it just seems normal for people to do that.

    12. it's lumped by those who like the lump all together, and/or don't know anything about them.
I myself think it's separate, but the distinction even crossed my mind.

    13. I never have liked anime and I honestly don't even know what cos-play is, but I love dolls!
No one has really ever said anything to me about my dolls being anime either. But maybe I just don't get out much :)

    14. Pretty much all of my hobbies are related to or stemmed from something related to anime, so..um...nope, doesn't bother me. ^_^; I can see where it would bother those who aren't into it or those who have more realistically-styled dolls, though. But my characters are all very anime-styled, so for me it would be hard NOT to make that connection.

    15. I never really connect my various forms of geekdom in my head. I like yaoi and horror manga, plastic crap, gadgets, computer games, cult tv and now I'm a doll nerd too. Never got into dolls from anime and I don't really see an innate connection, apart from the fact people who like dolls tend to also like anime. They're both fannish interest with an emphasis on characterisation and a big internet community. I think 'outsiders' quite reasonably make that association because the two are often presented together - doll fans show up a lot in the anime community and the conventions get lumped together.
So no, I dont think they're actually anime related but it doesnt bother me at all if thats how people think of them. Because I don't have dolls for other peoples approval or understanding.
I don't think words like nerd, geek and otaku are that insulting any more, since the otaku embraced their identity and the word itself. As long as you realise youre an otaku you're probably ok >_^

    16. I have a strong desire that shaping my future dolls based on my favorite anime,so it doesn't bother me if people think that BJDs is related to anime..

    17. I would LOVE Rozen Maiden doll!! IMO it doesnt matter to me if people always group anime and BJD together.

    18. I don't think it's just people who don't know anything about them. D: I mean, I still don't know MUCH about them, but they always seemed linked with anime to me because the only places I ever hear about them are in anime communities and the only places I ever see them are at anime cons, and most BJDs have a very anime-type aesthetic, with young characters and smooth features and long noses and slim bodies and all that. (Plus very similar fashion trends, and similar character themes like sexy vampires and wings and cat ears and stuff.) It all seems a lot like anime, to me. I mean some parts of it do stray to a place that is completely separate from anime, but a ton still overlaps.

It's like the connection between dolls and fancy girly cr... stuff. D:
Everyone knows there is a definite connection there, so I can't deny it even though it makes me uncomfortable being associated with that stuff. You just have to not let first impressions bother you. People will realize what your reasons are for being into the hobby once they talk to you more.

    19. Well they are featured in Anime like Rozen Maiden so I understand the connection. I only do not like it when people get all nasty like oh Those anime dolls

    20. Eh, to be fair, didn't the original Dollfie by Volks look a lot like anime characters and originated from them?

Anyway, since the anime fanbase grates me so, yeah, gets on my nerves, a little.
