To those Who Own Only or Prefer One Gender Over the Other

Jun 3, 2008

    1. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I like girls because I like to dress them up in clothes I would like to wear. Boys, I feel strange about....I feel like a perv when I change their clothes. But with Anthros, I always call them boys! I dont know why!

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No, Never

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      Sure, why not.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I dunno, no one has ever asked me haha.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I just never really liked any of the BJD boys...:P

    2. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

Definitely prefer girls. Aesthetically, the males practically look like girls minus boobs, and I like the curves on a female body much more so than the straight lines of a male body. It's not to say that I haven't looked at male bjds, I just haven't seen any that appeal to me nearly as much as the girls on my wishlist.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

I brought it up myself as a topic of conversation with another friend, but I haven't been specifically asked by anyone.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

That I'd rather be considered a lesbian than a pedophile that likes little boys. (note that this is my smarmy comeback and not a view I hold of anyone else)

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?

      Not that I know of.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I have a habit of drawing and creating more female characters on the whole, so it comes as no surprise that I'd prefer to own female BJDs - like up there, it's just an aesthetic preference. I like real men over doll men and doll girls over real girls.

    3. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Males. I'm not sure why, I just find them more appealing I guess. Most of my other characters are guys too. I'm pickier when it comes to girls. And I have dolls/characters that I could crossdress if I wanted to and it wouldn't go against their personality/character.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Not really, I think my mum was curious at first while I was only getting boys, but now that I have a few girls I'm wanting she's dropped it.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
The truth. I don't really know why I prefer boys, but as said before, the majority of my characters are male (57 as opposed to 26, though some charries are missing) and I draw them a lot more than the girls.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
No one's said anything, and most of my irl friends with dolls have boys too (only three of the dolls in our group of 10+ are female).
      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Not quite sure. The sex of my characters used to be really balanced (one boy per girl) and my very first character was a girl. In the 7th or 8th grade I think my preference changed and the boys started outnumbering the gals.

    4. I am assuming this applies to only ABJDs because it is very different for other types of dolls of which I have many.

      1) What gender do you prefer & why?

Prefer boys, will only buy boys.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

Yes, they are surprised to see beautiful boy dolls.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I tell them I collect only boy ABJDs but my other types of dolls, (Vintage, Ashton Drake, Mattel etc) are girls.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

Yes, they certainly do. The more they think this way, the more I refuse to show them a girl doll in my possession. It's stereotyping that dolls must be girls and girls only play with girl dolls.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I have always loved pretty boys in Japanese anime since little, I grew up liking beautiful boys. Since I came into this hobby through anime, I prefer boys.

I recently bought a vinyl BJD (not ABJD) from Ashton Drake and of course, she's a girl. I am regretting this because I realized that although she's vinyl, she's every inch a BJD and I have to treat her the same way as ABJDs. I don't love her as much as my big BJD boys. I am reluctant to show her photos and I am reluctant to spend money on building her wardrobe because my heart is not there. I am now more aware of my preferences. I won't allow other people to define what doll I buy or what suits me better. Nobody should be telling me what my dolls mean to me.

    5. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
      I prefer the boys.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Yes.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I tell them I like the sculpts more and that I don't really know why...
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Not really.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I prefer male characters in anime (the really feminin ones) and that led to me liking the male dolls more.

    6. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I think it would have to be female dolls. Female sculpts seem to have more elegance than male ones.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Proberly something like 'you can dress up girls more', meanwhile trying to think up a more solid reason.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      No.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Having done life drawing I've learnt to appreciate the female form and female BJDs have captured that beauty. That's what drew me to BJDs in the first place. I would love to feel the same way about boy dolls but there's nothing out there that can portray the sort of male figure I am drawn to. I really love languid looking males in art, but can't seem to find that in BJDs. Maybe I should try putting a hybrid together to get that effect.

    7. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I prefer boys. I only have one girl but I didn't buy her, she was a gift. Although, I love her a lot and all that, I still have a preference for my boys ;) (and sometimes I find her long hair annoying) it's not only that i like male dolls, I also like only boys in real life (motherly speaking) when i get married and have kids, I want my first baby to be a boy, girls never called my attention. I realized this because I love more my little nephews than my nieces (sad but true^^) I have one sister and 3 brothers and I get better and love more my brothers than my sister (she also prefers them over myself). And girl BJDs remind me of barbies. I hate barbies.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

No, no one has ever asked me why I prefer boys dolls or why I would want to have a son over a daughter.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

Girls just don't appeal to me. Boys can be beautiful and attractive without all that make up and heavy fashion. I also don't like girly things such as bright colors, dresses, make up etc. Also most of the clothes I have found for female dolls are not of my taste!! I love all the clothes and shoes i've bougth for my boys and i get a LOT of fun with them^^

Oh and I find the male body more attractive and interesting than the female's. I realized this when I was in art school and we had to draw naked models (both men and women) *blushes*

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

I don't think so, but if you think it's weird, i'd love to know why you think that way^^

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Since I was 5 years old i guess. My mom always bought me barbies and female dolls when I was a kid, I despided them. When I was that age i always said (and i keep on saying it) that i prefer to have a little boy baby than girls.

So...the only way i can have girls is if they are given to me as gifts:sweat all my money will be spent on the boys~

    8. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
-Boys, I have three boys and one girl, and even she is a little tomboyish

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      -Not really

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
-I'm not exactly sure. I just find them beautiful. Maybe I feel competitive with girls? I get along with girls just fine in real life. Hmm...

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
-Little bit? I think its weird that I don;t want my twin Ryus to have girlfriends. I'm oddly possessive of them. Weird :P

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other
-When I saw this thread ^^

    9. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys really. I can't really say why, their has only been a few girl dolls I thought where nice, but I did not get them, they where only nice and I can't justify paying 600 - 1,00 USD for just " nice". While on the other hand I have only female anime figures ( over 10 pvc) , no males, there just are not any nice male anime figures ever made.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
My roommate, but more as a asking why do we do this? ( because she also is in the same boat as me, only male dolls yet own only female anime figures)

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That conversation usually goes to the pricing and personal likes.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
We some times think we are weird. Then I get over it. I can't explain it but yeah, you like what you like.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
When I-ra for D.).D came out, I love her sculpt so much, then I though of " what if I bought her" and I presented I did, and tried to picture my self posing her, taking pictures, handling her, and there was just something missing, yet that's never happened to me when I handle my boys, I guess its like paying to much for an over priced huge possible pvc figure... maybe that's why I only buy boys ( because there are no nice male anime figures)???

    10. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
      - I like boys best. I'm really picky with my boys but not so much with girls, so I'm happy with the one msd I have, and the tiny, but boy wants are endless @@
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      - No, not really.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      - I have a lot of guy characters and I just like them better 00
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      -Don't think so lol
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
-Ive always liked boys better XD I usually don't like playing games or reading books with a female main character, in anime and stuff I don't like most of the girls and most of characters are boys; I do have a few girl characters I <3 very much tho 00

    11. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
      Male dolls.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Not really, no.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I have nothing against girl dolls, and even have one on my wishlist, but I just have more fun with male dolls.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
If they do, they haven't said so.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Its just how I've felt since coming into the hobby. And I generally dislike female characters in everything. Movies, games, anime etc. I think the reason behind it is a)I got tired of girly stuff as a kid. All the pink and frills and bows and stylish stuff that I was never really into to begin with. Having boy dolls, I can put them in teeshirts, and jeans, and beanie hats, jnco pants, sneakers, heavy jewlery etc. And reason b) Girl characters tend to annoy me. Especially if they show a lot of skin or are excessively perfect. Because I am not, and I can't relate to that AT ALL.

    12. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer boys for the most part, and it's all I have at the moment. I really think I'm just pickier when it comes to girls, and it just so happens the ideas for characters I've had in mind have been boys so far.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
No, not that I know of. Collecting boys seems pretty commonplace here.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
About the same as #1. It's not that I don't want girls, it's just that all my character ideas have been boys so far, and I already have a decent wardrobe pool for more boys.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
As I said, probably not, seeing as how common it is. My BF wonders sometimes but doesn't seem weirded out by it at all. He knows I associate primarily with guys anyway, so why would this be much different.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I guess when I noticed all my dolls and near future doll plans were male. It just kind of happened, not really intended.

    13. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Male. Just by a little, though. I have almost as many girls as boys, but more boys.

I've always been more attracted to boy dolls--maybe because they used to be so rare--I mean, the really attractive ones! There are tons more Barbies than Kens, for instance, and they always looked so much better than the Kens... I like guys and I just have always kept my eye out for male dolls, since they were so much harder to find in the past.

Maybe my experience has always been as a female with no brothers, so maybe I want to play about with something different?

I like boys. I like men. I like how their fashions can look (ordinary clothes rather bore me, but guys who dress up just really appeal!).

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Not that I recall. I don't mind answering that question, though.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Pretty much what I said in Question 1.

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
No. The whole doll thing is weird enough. I guess getting boy dolls is a bit odder than getting girl dolls in the general population, but among BJD owners, I think it's not at all strange, which is NICE. :D

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
When I was a child, there just weren't many boy dolls, but even when I was around 5 or 6 I was envious of my best friend (female) who had a GI Joe! (I didn't like how GI Joe looked, but all the extra joints were fantastic--I'm talking about the 12" large dolls). I only had girl dolls when I was a child. When I started buying dolls on my own, after High School, I know I was starting to look for male dolls... but I was mostly buying them rather like I still buy them... Male AND Female, but with a slight edge to the Males.

I think society encourages people to buy more female dolls (by not having more male dolls available). I think in the past I worried that I was thought to be odder than I am if I bought only male dolls! Now, I'm not (so much) worried.

    14. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer boys. I think it's because I'm really tom-boyish and if I could, I would dress as a guy more often because gosh darn it, those baggy jeans are just soo comfortable!! Lol! But I like my pretty skirts too ;D So now I can make cool clothes for a little boy ^^ and he'll show off the other side of my style for me XD Plus, most of my friends are guys, so this friend would probably be a dude too.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Yes. Sometimes.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I always tell them "If a guy has a really nice car or a boat or something, they always refer to it as a 'she'. So it makes sense to me". ^^
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Nope. Not at all. I've talked to my friends about it and they all agree they like to address their objects *i.e. stuffed animals XD as boys too!
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
      I don't know... XD

    15. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

Boys, and I'm not sure why. Maybe it's because I'm female. Maybe it's that I've only found a few female sculpts that don't look "hard" to me. Maybe it's because they really didn't make boy dolls that weren't truly ugly when I was young. Maybe it's my ingrown hatred of how women are "supposed" to use beauty products and floof themselves up in order to be adequate in the society I've lived in. Dunno. I have both gender dolls, and enjoy the girls, but the boys are at least twice as numerous if not more.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

Nope. They either assume it has something to do with anime or assume that the dolls are girls.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I like boys better? See #1

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

Other's what? :) (plural doesn't take an apostrophe. Sorry).

Others think I'm weird to begin with. The dolls I've taken out, though, tend to be dressed in kimono or hakama sets so I don't think their gender really occurs to most people.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Right off the top. It didn't even occur to me to buy a female doll at first.

    16. What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer females. Simply put, I can identify with them more. They explore their fictional life as I've experienced it and react to it in ways I am familiar with. It's like plunking myself down in the middle of an anime cartoon. For me, it's a way of expressing myself and making sense of the complex world we live in.
Do people ever ask you about your preference?
My hubby and I have discussed it on occasion. He understands and thinks it's cool that I am able to use BJDs as a way to creatively express life around me through the stories of my dolls. He appreciates the creativity of it and enjoys seeing the happiness it brings me. (Plus, we'd pretty much run out of wall space around here for my original art,:sweat so he really appreciates it that the dolls don't take up nearly as much space (believe it or not) while still allowing me to be as uber-creative as I need to be.
What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I'd just tell them that I identify with the girls more and that they're a fun way for me to express myself creatively.
Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
No, when I explain it to them they're more like "of course!"
When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
When I ordered a gorgeous MSD minimee Johnny Depp head in the marketplace. It looked just like Johnny did in his portrayal of Ichabod Crane in Legend of Sleepy Hollow (drop-dead gorgeous) and was everything I'd dreamed of for an original male character I'd been dying to put into resin form...I'd been wanting just one boy for my collection. But once that gorgeous head arrived, it just stayed in it's box untouched for months and months before selling it! That's when I knew I just wasn't interested in boy dolls at all.

    17. I prefer girls over guys anytime (dollwise hehe) I think its from when I was little, you just want to be like the doll your playing with, and they're such beautiful things I still think I wish I was them, you can dress them up like you'd want to dress if you dared :)

    18. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys for sure, I just am into more of the boy dolls. I dont like a lot of girl dolls.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Not really
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I just think they look better, and I like them more.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      No not really
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I was looking at dolls all over the place and I all ways whent back to the boys. I never did care of the girls, But there were a few I liked.

    19. I don't have a doll yet so I can't quite answer the others. However, I think I will stick with a male because I have a character I wanna create. However, I would probably like a girl for all the dresses.
