To those Who Own Only or Prefer One Gender Over the Other

Jun 3, 2008

    1. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I stick to female dolls simply because I think they look better than male dolls. I'm not against buying a male doll, just haven't foudn one that I like.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
I've had people say that its stereotypical for a guy to have female dolls and that I just like to perve on a doll.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I just tell people the female dolls are prettier and more outfits than male dolls.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      No.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
      Not sure.

    2. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
To be honest I really don't like how gender confused a lot of male dolls look. I think it goes along with my attraction to the opposite sex in real life, I wouldn't date most male dolls I've seen. If he wears my makeup, and my clothes, ICK. LOL But that's just me, in the future I might succumb to a pretty boy doll, but for now I'm girls all the way.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Mmmm, not really. I am only just expecting my first doll, so it hasnt ever come up.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
The same thing I just told you. LOL
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      NA
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
The first time I laid eyes on a BJD.

    3. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? Female, I don't own any male dolls and I never will

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference? no one has so far

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference? I just don't ever want to own a male doll. I like girl's clothes and dressing up my female dolls, I have no interest in male clothes/hairstyles/shoes and when I see the girls I just think they are really pretty. Maybe it's because I only had female dolls as a kid, I don't know. Also I'm not into stuff like yaoi so I have no desire to dress a boy in girl's clothes either.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference? No, I think there are lots of women who only buy female dolls. In the doll hobby as a whole (not just BJD but the whole doll hobby) the majority of dolls are female anyway.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other? When I was a child I guess, I just never wanted any boy dolls and all of my Barbies were single.

    4. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I have only boy dolls. That is because they are based on my favorite anime characters and I tend to like the boys more than the girls. Most girl characters annoy me.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

      Not really.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

Exactly what I said for question 1.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

I have no idea. But my students don't, especially after I explain why.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Watched an anime called Gundam Wing and kept HOPING Heero would just off Relena. I realized quickly that I like the boy characters a lot more than most girls. So when I got into dolls, that carried over.

    5. i totally thought id posted here already!

      1) What gender do you prefer & why?
      boys, all the way.
i dont really know, i mean, most but not all my characters are boys so that might be it. theyre definitely my favorite characters.
i like looking at boys, drawing boys and writing them better than girls. my cats are boys...and i just havent bonded yet with any of my girl dolls (all sold but one, for sale XD) even though im trying again. i have new girl on the way....

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      not really.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      um, i like boys?

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
i did have one person tell me that the reason i dressed my boy up like a girl was because i really wanted a girl. i dont think thats true (especially since i cant seem to keep a girl) because i dont see Wyn as dressing like a girl so much as dressing like a Wyn...

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
when i sold my first girl and ended up with more than 15 boys i adore.

    6. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? Boys because I am a girl.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference? I like girls, too but I like having boy dolls, so when I say I like her, they say I should buy girl dolls as well.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference? because I like boyish dolls?
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference? I dont think so. I saw many girl owners having only boy dolls.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other? I think it started when I first collected dolls. I am not sure when I realized it though,

    7. What gender do you prefer & why?
So far, 95% of the original characters I created are male xD; And then 4% of the females are tomboys, lol.

Do people ever ask you about your preference?
A girl asked me why I chose a boy as my first BJD. I didn't know what to answer...

What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      Eh. "I don't know." xD

Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
      I used to.
I think others don't really care ¦D Not many people are aware that I have a doll, anyway.

When & how did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
When I was writing down my possible character ideas. I noticed that most of them... actually, all of them were male.

I have found an explanation for my preference, though. I only like my characters when they're something I am not. In other words, I don't have any characters younger than 16, because I have already experienced those ages. They're not interesting to me anymore. Same thing goes with the gender.

Besides... most male BJDs look so feminine, that I don't need girl dolls anymore, haha! xD *shot*

    8. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I prefer whatever sculpt interests me, regardless of gender. I currently have two girl dolls and one boy. One of the girls is normally a boy sculpt, but worked out better as female for my purposes.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

      Not that I recall.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I would ask them what business is it of theirs to ask about my personal preferences and that their nosiness is not appreciated.

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?

I have better ways to spend my time than to worry about how someone else will percieve me.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I have always had a mix of male and female characters, although my most memorable RPG and story characters have always been male. I find it easier writing from male perspectives than female.

Reading back through the pages here I find it striking how similiar some of the justifications I have seen men use for their gender choices for avatars in online roleplaying games. It's usually one of two: "I'm a guy. Why would I want to stare at another guy for hours?" or "If I play a girl, others might think I'm a girl. I'm not gay!"

    9. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I have a preference for the boys
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
They have not yet, except for you, I sadly do not own any dolls quite yet.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I'd tell them I liked males better, can't really explain it
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Actually most of my friends have male-only collections. Maybe it's contagious :p
      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Just when I browse pictures of dolls and try to plan my first purchase I find myself more drawn to the boys.

    10. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? Not sure if I qualify because, technically, I don't have one at home right now, but I did order a boy about a week ago. So far, I prefer boy dolls. I love boys, I like male body/anatomy, and I guess I haven't found a female doll that really interests me (yet). I think it also stems from the oversaturation of female bodies in magazines, tv, etc. that I am just at the point where I want more male bodies in my life (yum)

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference? My sister asked; she likes girl dolls because she can sew frilly dresses :)

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference? The truth lol I guess it depends on how the question was asked and who asked. A more 'personal' and longer answer to family/friends and a shorter version of 'just because' to strangers and rudely asked questions.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference? I told few family members about my purchase (they find it a bit funny that I still like dolls but they are pitching in to help me with my future purchases). I think most people are more shocked about the price than the gender (ahem, I think my husband fainted when I told him the price).

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other? Just by surfing the net and searching for dolls. I found that I am drawn more to the boy molds, clothes, etc.

Great questions and very interesting answers so far :)

    11. I prefer girl dollys for some reason. I don't think I'll ever get a boy. Not that I don't like them its just that I don't have an interest in collecting boys. : x

    12. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? I prefer female dolls. I just think they're beautiful. Part of this comes from the fact that I'm a heterosexual guy, I guess. I also like dressing my dolls in pretty clothes. Having my girls in pretty dresses and stuff is better than having guys in those clothes, IMO.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Yes. My parents tell me to get a girlfriend :sweat Actually, I think they're less concerned about me having female dolls as opposed to male dolls and more concerned about me having dolls at all.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference? I tell them that I think my dolls are beautiful and/or cute. That's the truth.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference? They think it's weird that I have dolls, period. However, I think the fact I like female dolls over male dolls is one of the things others think about least when it comes to my dolls.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other? That goes back to the earliest stages of puberty for me

    13. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys boys boys! *sings the gaga song* I've always liked boy's fashion, I like drawing boys, I like boy's hair, I like their anatomy, and their general attitude about life (...most of the time). I'm always "one of the guys" (it's a blessing and a curse).

The only time i consider getting a girl doll is when one of my guys looks lonely...so far his pouting lip hasn't made me get one though.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

Uh, no. My friends know me well enough to know that i wouldn't get a girl doll, not that I don't think they are pretty, many are gorgeous. I don't blatantly advertise that I own dolls though so many people wouldn't know to ask me.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

That I like boys better. (?)

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
Not that I'm aware. It totally didn't surprise my mother because I would always pretend my barbies were boys as a kid and cut their hair XD

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

Since I started drawing seriously and I realized my sketch books were only filled with male characters.

Short furwigs are a god send. :)

    14. 1) What gender do you prefer and why?
Boys, and older masculine guys at that. I do like female dolls but I'm just not into BJD girls. I just don't pay attention to them. I've always liked the idea of really nice male dolls but never found anything beyond action figures and Ken. When I saw some of the more mature male BJD sculpts like Yukinojo and Hound something just clicked.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
No. I'm lucky to have some really good friends who also happen to be doll-collectors so I don't think it occured to them. Or maybe they just know me really well.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That I prefer boy BJDs...they're more fun for me to own. Since most of my other dolls are female aside from a few action figures it's nice to have some boys around...:)

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
Not that I'm aware of. I think my dollie-friends just know it's something I like, just as one of dollie-friends prefers MF Shushus and Yos and other tinies. We just like different things is all.

      5) When and how did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
It's only a preference in the BJD world. As a kid I loved my Star Wars figures just as much as my Barbies and played with them equally. As an adult I love my blythes as much as I love my BJD boys. My blythes seem to satisfy my need for feminine, quirky cuteness and my BJDs satisfy my need for beautiful male figures. I knew right when I got my first boy that I'd never own a BJD girl...at least not an SD sized one.

As an aside I've noticed that many who favor boys over girls say they do because of the lack of cool female characters and I tend to agree. It's sad really and shouldn't be that way...:( One of the (many) reasons acting has never interested me is due to the lack of interesting and self-sufficient female characters. They are almost always side-kicks, love-interests or an object needing to be rescued. Or worse, fodder for horror and crime drama villians...:(

    15. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
i prefer boys , i seem to be a much harsher critque towards girls. its very hard for me to find a girl doll i really like. i only know of 2 and don't plan on buying eiher of them.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
yes beyond just dolls i tend to choose boys over girls in other subjects such as drawing or my friends and such. im often asked "do you not like girls? you don't seem to" ect.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
lol i answer honestly. i say "nahh i don't really like girls. im more of a shota con" and if they give me pronblems i ask them what there prefrence is and that usually shuts them up.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
hehe ya. especially since im a girl myself.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
umm..its kinda obvius ..um i didn't really "discover" like i had and epiphany or anything. i just always choose boys. i'll see a girl and say "aww to bad! if only she were a he." i geuss i noticed it ...like .. a couple years ago

i feel like im not answering the questions right sorry:sweat

    16. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys. Because I'm tired of marketing sexy/cute girls so I support materializing guys. :aheartbea

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Not yet?

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Same answer as why. And because I like it better?

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

When I amass an army they probably will?

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Forever ago. Bishounen anime dudes + girly girls irk me + I'm more in-tune with guy stuff/thinking than girly stuff.

    17. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Generally I prefer boy dolls, probablly because most of my characters are male and are the romantic counterpart to my best friends girls. It just seems to work out that way haha, I have a hard time making girl characters and the only one I really have and love is a female knight.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      Yes they've asked me and I usually give them the story/RP explanation. I also add in that I don't like the typical weak girl character we are often brought up seeing and it's hard for me to work outside that. Plus there aren't many real beautiful men so the resin ones are making up for them? XD;
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Maybe abit but they seem to leave it alone when I explain my RP preference. I grew up with girl dolls, it's just now I can have boy dolls who are actually potentially attractive to look at so it's fine if they think its weird, it works for my interests. :P

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I suppose Jr.High, the female anime characters really pissed me off usually. I had a girl character back then but I still always had more male characters and seemed to have more fun RPing them with my best friend. The trend continues to this day, but we're finally expanding that XD; We've made a Yuri couple lol!

    18. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I really don't prefer one gender over the other, however, I notice myself wanting female dolls. I only like them a little better because it's easier to make clothes for girls, than it is for boys. x3
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Uh...right now. xD (But no).
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I would tell them the exact same thing I said in number one. ^^
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Not that I know of.
      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Actually, my mom just made a really good point, and I guess it just grew on me.

    19. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys! :aheartbea I'm a girl...Boys are just fun to cuddle. I am very picky when it comes to girls sculpts too, I have only found about 4 that I actually like.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
No, not really. I guess they figure it is natural.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      I love men.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
The only people that think it is weird are not into the hobby and don't understand that men can be beautiful.
      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
I have always favored guy characters so it wasn't really a shock.

    20. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I tend to prefer male face sculpts because the female ones generally don't appeal to me aesthetically. I also prefer male body sculpts, because they tend to be more flexible (for whatever reason), and because I feel that boobs should really be soft. :(

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
It hasn't yet come up in conversation.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
"If I put a dress on it, would you be able to tell it's a male body? No? Ok, then it's a girl. :D"

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I hang around with people who own hordes of boys...

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I've been trying and trying and trying to find a female doll I can like. For years. Even now when I have a head that could pass as female, I can't find a body I like. Squishy boobs. Someone needs to make them.
