To those Who Own Only or Prefer One Gender Over the Other

Jun 3, 2008

    1. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I would love to be able to say, that I don't have a preference, but I do. I prefer girls. I think I just enjoy working with girl characters. Girly girls, boyish girls, delicate girls, mature women, little girls and everything in between. Also I just adore the female body. It's much much prettier, in my opinion, than the male body.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No, I've never been asked.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Say it like it is. There is no shame in having a preference.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Not that I know of.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I've just recently discovered it. I kept saying that I needed to get a certain male character, but I kept getting new girls instead. :sweat

    2. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys, I like bishies. I also have a bit of dislike for female dolls. I used to hate Barbies and dolls in general when I was a kid. Played with cars, Transformers, Beast Wars and plushies. Oh, and ponies.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Once. I was visiting my grandmother with my KDF Bory and said I'd buy another boy doll. My grandma asked "Why don't you buy a girl?". Then again, all dolls were female, with dresses and such, when she was little.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
The truth - that I dislike female dolls. There are, of course, wonderful girl dolls out there, and I can't resist to compliment their owners. They aren't for me though.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Dunno and don't care. I'm used to being called a weirdo.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Concerning dolls in general - when I was a toddler xD
BJDs - the moment I discovered them.

    3. What gender do you prefer and why?
Saying I simply prefer boys doesn't really work with my beliefs about the word "gender". I think that within the sexes there are a variety of genders; and of all the bjds I prefer very slightly effeminate men, but only effeminate to a point. That is, I wouldn't seriously consider buying a male doll that looks like a female to me, but I'm not about to go out and buy an Iplehouse Tedros, lol! That is a matter of my aesthetic preference.
I still admire beautiful female dolls (and I am a feminist), however I am hesitant about buying one even though they look like fun, and I think that it's rooted in my motivation behind buying bjds.
On a surface level I could say that it's because I'm a zealous slash fangirl, and this would make me interested in your typical "gay looking" doll.
Stemming from this I'd say I am fascinated in masculine beauty, especially that which is different from the status quo we see so often in the real world. I have an interest in studies of masculinity and it is something I feel strongly about.

Do people ever ask you about your preference?
It's something I always freely express to other bjd owners. A male doll to people outside the community is uncommon so I do sometimes get asked why I chose a "boy doll". That's if they know to ask though! Many do automatically assume that my doll is a girl, even though he's got hugely broad shoulders and wears jeans and a shirt.

What would you tell someone who asked about this preference?
Depending on the person I've had to say "Because he's so hansooom!!!" or "Because I like men's fashion!" (both true). If I'm pressed further, I'm sorry to say, but I've often told the shameful white lie "I'm going to get a girl doll next!"
If it's someone who understands me a little more I tell them that I am interested in different kinds of masculine beauty and say that I think a different male aesthetic should be brought more into the mainstream.

Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
OH BOY! They do! Not one person outside the hobby who has found out that I own a male doll hasn't raised an eyebrow! And then they create their own theories about me. I do not care to hear them!
After I bought my first doll it was the worst and I always worried about what my friends and family were saying behind my back. My excitement was tarnished because of this. My own sister told me that I embarrassed her (I'm not exactly galavanting around town with my doll either, he sits on a shelf). You've gotta develop a thick skin in this hobby. Sometimes I think it would be easier if I just bought a female doll. I have been complimented by a close friend about it though, she said that I'm not afraid to embrace the things I love, which is a pretty damn good thing to aspire to I think.

When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
The first doll I saw was male. Adoring certain male bjd sculpts is the most natural thing to me. Originally I didn't even think that people seriously collected female bjds, and part of me still can't really relate to that feeling. I can understand that they might be for a character, personally I've really never had a female character. I guess one of the reasons why I love the bjd hobby is that there is such a unique prevalence of beautiful male dolls.

    4. What gender do you prefer?
Generally girls, because guys that suit my girls don't really appealed to me. There was 2, iplehouse Claude and Barahan, but they are long sold out:atremblin. Dosen't mean if I ever saw one in normal skin in the marketplace I would let them pass. I am keeping my eyes peeled for them. I have several dolls on my to get list, but my girls outnumber guys in all sizes.
Do anyone ask about your preference?
      No
What would you tell someone who asked about this preference?
Buy which ever doll appealed to me. Just happened more girls struck me than guys.
When and how did I discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
When I saw the number of girls on my wish list compared to maybe 4 boys.

    5. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
All 4 of my doll are girls. I like dressing them up and picking out clothes, hair and makeup for them more than I do guys. I guess i just like cute things.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
I've had people ask me if I plan to get a boy doll.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I tell them yes I would like to get a boy doll eventually I just haven't found one that I want to spend the money on which is the truth.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
No not really. Other than my sister nobody I know is into doll so.. they just think the whole thing is weird. I doubt the fact that my group is all girls really even comes to mind.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Since the beginning I've always be more attracted to the female dolls. None of the boys ever really caught my attention.

    6. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Female, more fun for me to dress than male dolls.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Not sure, I don't see why anyone I know would ask.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
No, they may think I'm weird for collecting dolls but not for my preference.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I've always prefered female dolls, I think the only male doll I ever had was OT Ken when I was a kid.

    7. What gender do you prefer and why?
Girls! I think it's because I like buying clothes for the and dressing them up - I couldn't imagine doing this with a boy doll.

Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Nope, no-one has ever mentioned it. I think I would find it strange if they did!

What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That I like girls because I like making them look pretty!

Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
      No, don't think so.

When & how did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
When I first got into collecting BJDs I was just automatically drawn to girl dolls. I never played with male dolls as a child (I had lots of Barbies but never any Kens) and I think my love of dolls as an adult has its roots in childhood memories.

    8. What gender do you prefer & why?

I like girl dolls best. I prefer girls in real life too :3 So I suspect that I just prefer the aesthetic that's traditionally labeled as "female". I like female body shapes better, traditionally female hairstyles (and traditionally male hairstyles on females!)

Do people ever ask you about your preference?

Nobody has yet. My friends used to be shocked when I played female RPG characters XD But I've started to play more female characters recently, so I don't think anyone would be surprised that I like girl dolls better.

What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

Probably the same thing I said in the first question, especially if it was someone who I thought was really interested in hearing my answer. If it was someone I didn't know, I might just say I thought girls were prettier.

Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

Not that I know of! I bet nobody here would think that :) I'm a noob, and I felt somewhat in the minority about being uninterested in boy dolls XD But reading this thread, I don't think I am.

When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I used to only write male characters and play male RPG characters. I'm not sure why. I still like male characters a lot, but I find myself writing more female characters as I get older, and when I got into this hobby, I just found that I like girl dolls better.

    9. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I have a 4:1 ratio of girls to boys here in my house. I just happen to have landed on having mostly girls. I even have a boy head I turned into a girl (or even two, but I don't count Fairyland's Carl as a boy simply as there is no way to make mine a boy). I have a variety of girls too, and I like exploring the possibilities of personality that can be expressed through their various outfits and face ups. I love using varieties of color and sheer and sparkle and I'm just starting to begin pushing the idea of layering my girl's outfits I sew.
My second doll is a boy, my only boy right now, and he is the hardest thing for me to get a face up on that I'm happy with. I'd say that's the primary reason holding me back from getting another boy. Maybe a boy who doesn't insist on and require facial hair will be next, particularly if it's mr.country's city-boy nephew, but for now I'm happy with my one boy and he's happy (even if his character acts otherwise) being the token dude here.
Ironically enough, he's also my favorite of my dolls.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Not much. I do get asked about all the pretty girls and then why I have "that guy" in the mix.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I need that many girls to balance out "that guy". XD

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Haven't really received comments outside of the hobby, but seems much of my own group commonly has their "token other gender" or the like in the mix.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Besides just liking the girls more often than the boys, trying to do Gel's face up again and again and again really sealed that I'm not sure how many boys I actually want.

    10. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys. I think it has something to do with me being a fangirl of boys love (yaoi) in manga/anime and the fact that bishies can exist in doll form :XD: I'm not that much of a tomboy, nor am I a girly-girl and I don't think sexuality has anything to do with it, at least not for me. I think male dolls are just more interesting, and most female sculpts look the same to me. I only like a select few of girl sculpts and have considered them but I just can't bring myself to own one, because there are just so much more male sculpts that I find more attractive. If I do get a girl now, I would eventually have to get her many other "friends" because I like balance in my collection. Also, I like the fact that bjds challenges the mainstream view of dolls as being limited to Barbies and such. I like how most male bjds are sculpted in that they defy the stereotypical "GI Joe" kind of "manly" look... what can I say, I just like pretty boys D:

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
No, but my grandma is always asking why I " always play with boys" OTL...

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      Uh.. (I don't know LOL)

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I tend to not tell people about my hobby, though it has nothing to do with the gender of the dolls I prefer. Those that do know don't think it's weird... (at least, not to my knowledge!)

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Right from the start, I knew that I wanted a boy. My friend who first showed me pictures of bjds showed me a photo of a beautiful male SD, and she was also into yaoi... :XD:

    11. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys without a second thought. Girl dolls just don't do it for me. I used to be a barbie collector, I had to much girl overload. XD
I'm an anime fan and I love pretty anime boys. My dolls make perfect 3d versions of them.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Sometimes. My sister did. Why did you get a boy? She asked. She asked because she likes girl dolls more.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Same as I answered in the first.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I think my sister does. But I don't care. It's my hobby and I love my boys. :D
      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

I actually knew it from the start, but over time I kept thinking, maybe I should get a girl doll too.
But they just do not appeal to me enough. I can not see me spending money over a girl doll while I could get a boy doll instead. Over time this feeling only got stronger.

    12. Great questions and I have enjoyed reading through the responses.

      1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I only have girls at this time but only because I haven't come across a boy I loved enough to buy. I do enjoy dressing the girls and it seems there are less clothing options for boys (maybe I'm just not looking in the right places!).

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

No, no one has ever asked me about this, but I'm not sure those who know about my collection are knowledgeable enough to ask. If I did have a boy they probably wouldn't think that was odd either.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I would tell them that the girls are fun to play with and I am happy to add a boy when I find the perfect one.

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?

      No one has said anything...

      5) When & how did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

It just kind of happened - my favorite BJD artist has only made girls to date (none are appropriate for gender bending) so that is how my collection came to be.

    13. While I have been known for a couple of boy molds, my taste in dolls usually leans towards the girls. Almost every doll I look at is usually a girl. I just find them more aesthetically pleasing for some reason. But like I said, I'll gladly take a boy if I happen to like the mold. :D

    14. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Male. Mainly because I like male clothing and dressing, and because my OCs are mainly male.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
No, not really. Except maybe my father who went, "EHH, you got a male doll? Why not a female?" when I first got my doll, haha.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Pretty much what there is to say: I just prefer male dolls over female.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Not really? There's many owners with mainly male/female dolls, and those with a good mix of both. It's all up to the owner. After all, dolls cost quite a bit, and you have to budget so you tend to buy whichever doll appeals to you, rather than really care about their gender. At least, that's my take.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Quite early in the hobby, actually. I realise I also have almost ZERO knowledge of female bodies of different companies, because I prefer male dolls, though I DO look at female heads ...even if it's mostly to turn them to boys, haha.

    15. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I like girls too, and I think it's because they can be so strikingly beautiful. I have only found one company that makes any boys I like, Iplehouse, and even then there are only two.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

No, I think they prefer girls too, so it has never really come up.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I would say that they are pretty and elegant, and that's why I like them.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

      No, not really.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Well, I guess I was just drawn to the girls. I do want a boy doll, but I have to find one that I really like or I know I will just be disappointed.

    16. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer boys. I personally have no interest in females, let alone female fashion. All of my dolls are male and I only have plans for one female doll and I'm still on the fence about actually getting her because she's just a character in my story line so it wouldn't be only men. If I got her I know she wouldn't get attention and she'd probably only have one or two outfits.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      I haven't been asked.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I'd tell them that I don't like girl dolls and I don't like girls clothing, thus it seems pointless for me to get a doll I'm not interested in.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I'm sure there's someone out there.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Well, as for dolls it was when I started getting interested in them around 2004. I personally have never been interested in females (dolls or real women) or female fashion. I myself do not wear women's clothing. I am unsure if I'm just a boyish girl or if I am a transgender male. I think I gained this preference for males because I do not like the female body nor the way women's clothing looks.

    17. I guess I prefer girls. I think I just like the look of them better, and that I feel more comfortable dressing/undressing/blushing them as I too am female. I'm not really sure. If I recall, there's only been a whopping total of 3 males that have peaked my interest at all, discounting any soom limited tinies as usually there is little difference between the "boy" and the "girl" other than resin color and options like eyes or outfit. On top of all that, it helps keep my SO at ease as he's openly stated that he would feel weirded out by my having a male doll (with a few exceptions) and that he would not order a male doll for me if he wanted to gift me a doll, that I would have to get him myself if I wanted him badly, (also with rare exceptions). And I'm okay with this as I haven't wanted many guys.

I don't really get asked, at least not in person or privately. I find that I only find myself answering this question here in threads such as this.

If someone did ask me why? "Uh... Cause I liked them?" I don't really have a reason why.

I'm sure someone thinks I'm weird for it.

I'm not sure that it was something I originally set out to do but rather something that just happened to happen. I liked the doll therefore I got it, they just happen to be mostly girls and therefore I guess I like female dolls more?

    18. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys. Every doll I've ever owned has been a boy, and the lion's share of sculpts I like are male. I think it has something to do with preferring male characters for my dolls. I tend to favor fan dolls over original characters, and there really aren't that many female characters that ring my bell, for whatever reason. I do have one female OC I'd love to dollify; she was one of my very favorite RP characters from years and years ago, but she'd be the sole exception to the male-dominated world that is my doll collection. I don't know that I'll ever get her, though. The doll I'd LOVE to have for her isn't in production anymore and is brutally hard to find. I have a backup mold, but...well, you know how it goes. :3

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
My daughter can't figure out why I have boy dolls that "look like girls". We're working on that whole thing where we learn that there aren't any set rules for what boys or girls have to look like.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Um...I like boy dolls? I'd tell them there just aren't that many girl dolls I like. Simple truth.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Not that I'm aware.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

Trial and error. I just found that there really weren't any female sculpts that rang my bell and as much as I want to make Jes into a doll, I had a real hard time finding a sculpt I liked for her, but there were a boatload of male sculpts I liked. So I figured that had to mean something.

    19. Boys FTW! They just look more appealing, I do recognize a beautiful girl but I don't see myself owning one.

    20. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer females way more than boys. No, I don't have any dolls just yet, but all my plans call for girls. I mainly like them more because I myself am a girl and I don't really want a boy doll that is correct in *that* area.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
As I don't have a doll yet, not really. Though my mom asked if I would ever get a boy, and I said no. When I told her they were correct, she was like, "Well, no wonder." :)
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That I don't enjoy looking at privates of men. :sweat But seriously, I would just say that I love girls more as that's what I am and most of my characters are girls. Plus, they're just so cute and have such wonderful dresses.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      No, not really.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Right away when I saw the first three girl dolls that I knew would be added into my family someday (so far I still need to hook my first girl).
