To those Who Own Only or Prefer One Gender Over the Other

Jun 3, 2008

    1. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Girls. I own two, and one on the way. Im not sure why, but I generally don't like boy dolls unless they're yosd or smaller. I've never found a MSD or SD boy that I like at all. I just don't like how they look.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No, never happened.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Why would I tell them anything else than that I prefer girl dolls? No one ever asked though, I'ts kind of obvious If you look at my doll family.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Not that I know of. I think most doll owners have preferences, whether it's size or gender, or both.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I've always only looked for girl dolls, the boys doesn't appeal to me and never have.

    2. Difficult...
I do prefer female dolls, simply because I feel that are more versatile when it comes to clothes. I love dresses and shoes, and I feel that girl dolls can wear more stuff than dudes.

BUT I love SD male dolls, because they look more mature than the average BJD and those are the kinda guys I fall for IRL (cheekbones FTW!!).

As I said... difficult. But that's why I'm more prone to buying female dolls.

    3. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? Male. I... plan to buy a couple of female dolls too mainly for characters in a story that my dolls are going to be a part of, and then a DC girl because she suits a OC of mine that I want to make into a doll. But I look more at male dolls and the sculpts I like end up being male dolls. As to why... I don't know. It may be partly because they have a body type that I can't draw, and I want to learn how... I haven't really looked at why I prefer the boys.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference? Nope.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference? That I just... prefer the boys. More of them capture my interest more so than the girls.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference? I don't know of anyone that cares. Then again it's not I have a bunch of dolls, so no one can actually see my preference for themselves.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other? Early on when I started getting into this hobby. Dolls to me had always been associated with "girl". Every non-BJD I'd ever owned had been a girl. Seeing these gorgeous male dolls instantly made me prefer them.... maybe because it was something different.

    4. I've found this a really interesting thread!
      my own answers...
      1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Well, it would have to be female. I like the dressability and versatility they can have.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Not really.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I'd say it was because I found it harder to become as attached to a male sculpt than to a female sculpt. Essentially, I like them more though.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Naaaaah.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
From the start. It takes me a while to decide to buy a doll (usually over a year ahaha), so I knew right away what I was looking for! XD

    5. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys. Probably because I really love the androgynous boy look.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Occassionally. Mostly friends who also share the hobby

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Yeah. I think it's part of understanding the hobby

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I dont think so, or atleast they never tell me. I have quite a few friends who prefer boys over girls anyway; so its more a mutual interest amongst most of my friends.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
While browsing for my 2nd doll. I picked out atleast 3 girls and ended up buying a boy anyway because I felt like I wouldn't bond with a girl as well.

    6. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I definitely prefer girls to boys. All six of my BJDs are girls and my assorted off-topic dolls are also female. It's mostly because I'm super picky about my dolls; they have to pose well, be sculpted in a way that pleases me, and they also have to fit the character I'm purchasing them for. Girls in the 40cm range are more numerous than boys, and most of those boys look too effeminate (to me) for me to consider them as candidates.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

I've never had anybody ask me personally, so I guess it just doesn't matter to my doll-friends and family. XD

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I'd tell them the truth; that it's difficult for me to find a boy that I like aesthetically, who also fits my characters.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

I don't know! I've never asked, and my fiancรฉ hasn't said anything. :)

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I just seemed to always buy girls, even when I'd say, "I'm gonna get a boy this time!" It doesn't help being so choosy either, but I've always gotten exactly what I wanted in a doll and only once have I actually sold a doll because I couldn't bond with her.

    7. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Women. I think simply because I am a woman, and because I've never found men physically appealing, aesthetically or sexually(not that I'm sexually attracted to dolls, I'm not THAT weird). I just find them much more comfortable and aesthetically attractive.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      You just did. :')

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      Girls.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Not a clue.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Since I began drawing humans I've always been drawing girls. *Shrugs* Guess it originated there.

    8. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

At first I tried not to prefer one gender over the other since I like looking at both genders but like you I started leaning more into females. Males are nice to look at but females are more fun to play with.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

I believe my friend said something about it once that I tend to prefer females over males but it was more of a statement than a question.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

Males are nice to look at but females are more fun to play with. And that I'm very picky about my males. I picky with any doll in general. It's just I find more female dolls that I like than male dolls that are in my price range. :sweat

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?

Not really. Not yet anyway since I only have two complete dolls one from both genders with one more female on the way. But they more likely won't see the preference anyway unless they see me looking at different dolls.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

Not right away since my first doll was a male and I didn't know much about the hobby back then as I do now. It was around when I got Kat that I started to get her more clothes than Azan. :sweat I think it came down to the clothes since I founded more female clothes that I like than male clothes.

Since I have a sleeping floating head for Kat (Island Doll Amy sleeping head) I do plan to get the Island Doll immature bust MSD girl body since Kat has the mature bust I just want to have a comparison and give that head a body. So Kat will have a twin.

    9. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Definitely girls, I don't think I could own a boy unless they were a really cute tiny and I'd probably dress him borderline "girl" anyway. XD
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Not so far.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Probably that I naturally prefer girly things so I gravitate towards girls over boys.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I wouldn't have thought so, but perhaps?
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
It's sort of an automatic feeling, I've not been drawn to male dolls at all from the start. But saying that, I'm still new to the hobby so who knows what might change. I'm sure my husband might get jealous if I start collecting boys though.

    10. 1)What gender do you prefer and why?

I have more boys than girls. Mostly because I am attracted to the male mold more especially with the fantasy molds. And plus I am an older woman who appreciates the male form, getting dolls to pose for paintings is a lot easier than asking young males on the street (they usually run lol). Image wise I am a lot more picky about girl dolls. I have one complete girl and one floating head I am waiting on CP to start up making bodies again. On my wish list I have two more girls planned and two more boys. I am mostly drawn to the male image because I like beautiful men, always have.

      2) Do people ever ask about your preference?

No not generally, sometimes at meets we ask about eachothers collections but it is light and just point of reference really. None doll friends have not really bothered.

      3) What would you tell someone if they asked about your preference?

I like the male looks over the female looks in my collection in these type of dolls.

      4) Do others think its weird that you have this preference?

No. Because I can do a lot of other weird things as hobbys. Steampunk, SF/F conventions, unconventional religious beliefs. A lot of people find doll collecting charming at my age.

      5) When and how did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I am not sure. When I started buying more male dolls than female dolls. Being attracted to the male sex more I put down to heterosexual, but didn't pay it much mind. And according to most of my relatives I am very male minded in thinking, argument and logic.

    11. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Girls. I do have boys, but I prefer girls. They're more versatile in terms of wigs, and eyes, and clothes. Girls can wear almost anything and still look great. Boys just don't have that versatility.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Not before I saw this post!

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I'd be super-surprised if anyone did. I travel in a large circle of doll folks, not all in the bjd world, and it's just a given that there are more girls dolls than boy dolls. Even the male doll collectors I know prefer girls.

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
I would think it a bit weird if they did. I seriously don't care, though.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
Girls rule, boys drool. 'Twas always thus. ;D

    12. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Girls. I have two, and one on the way. Im not sure why, but I generally don't like boy dolls, LOL.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No..

      3) What would you te
ll someone who asked you about your preference?
Nothing in particular. I like how they looks, and they're so easy to dress ^O^

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Don't think so. I imagine that people thinks I'm weird collecting so expensive dolls.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Simply, I bought a girl, and another, and another.

    13. At first I thought I preferred girls but eventually found out that while I tend to like doll-like girls I only like realistic/mature boys. I now have two large realistically sculpted boys and one MNF girl. I plan on getting at least one more boy (Iplehouse) and I don't know if I will be getting another girl or not.

I think that my sister thought it was weird when I was just buying girls but I really like sewing and at that time only had dresses figured out so that was the reason I thought and gave for why I liked them more. I think the other part of it is that growing up with dolls they were almost all female because it is hard to find mainstream boy dolls. American girls don't have boys and with all the pretty barbie options there is just Ken. I think I got so used to making female characters that I had trouble coming up with male characters.

It is really interesting How different people have different preferences :)

    14. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
-I tend to prefer male. I'm not really sure why. I just tend to like their face sculpts more than the females.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      -Hmmmm.. not really.
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
-I'd probably joke saying, "i'm straight so it makes sense why i like mens more." but then just try and explain that my eyes and heart tends to go for the male sculpts instead of the females.
      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
-My friend says it's normal and that in the future my preference may level out.
      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
-I was looking at my want list and noticed... they were all guys except for one girl doll. xD;; I think in total there is only like 3 girl sculpts i would actually buy, while there is many many many guy sculpts i would hoard. xDDD /shot

    15. When I first got into the BJD hobby I wanted all boys.
I thought male BJDs were so unique in the doll world and you just don't see cool guy dolls like that anywhere else. And I had a lot of male characters I wanted to turn into doll form.
But then recently, I got back into the hobby I was browsing on clothing sites and saw all the adorable and pretty dresses they have for girl dolls. My boy isn't the cross dressing type, so I felt like I was missing out.
So now I'm changing things up and buying myself a girl. I think it's perfectly fine to prefer one gender of dolls over the other. People like what they like. For me I wanna have a good balance, a girl dress up really pretty and a boy that wears cool jackets, jeans, tshirts... It's more fun that way, lol.

    16. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer males. Not sure why.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
I'm extremely new to the hobby, but I'm sure someone will end up asking eventually.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I'd tell them that I just enjoyed the male sculpts more than the females. I think it's the faces. The boys I've found have the BEST noses!

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I would think so. I'm what you'd call a girly lesbian, so people assume I like female characters better.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Browsing through the sculpts and making my wishlist, almost all the dolls that popped out at me were male. To me, they felt like they had more personality.

    17. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer boys. Of 25 dolls, only 2 are girls. Part of the reason, I think, is because as a kid, there were never enough male options, but a ton of girl dolls...so I'm over-indulging now.
Also, partly because there are a lot of male doll bodies I like, (I LOVE skinny boys!) but not many female..(I don't care for skinny girls or "implant boobs' at all)
The other part is that I role play my characters and I have always felt like a man trapped in a woman's body, so I enjoy playing the guys and exploring that lifestyle more than the female one I already have.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      not often, but they have

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
um...the truth? Unless they were just being a jerk and being mean, then I would just tell them "because that's what I want" and walk away.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I don't think so, mostly. Maybe some do.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

From the start. When I first got Amir a little over 4 years ago, I didn't even consider buying a female as an option and looked only at the boys from the first day I heard about BJD.

    18. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Gimme them bois! It's a male harem around here. ;)

As much as I like admiring the beautiful curves and soft appearance of female sculpts, it's the clean lines and trim forms of the boys which draw me to own them. I like the range of options out there for the male body - from slim and kittenish to bulging super-hero muscles! Not to mention their faces, which can range from pretty-as-a-girl to uber square-jawed manliness.

With so many options out there for boys sculpts, what more could I need? ^^

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      ... Once, I think?

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That I don't feel like surrounding myself with lots of boobs. If I'm going to spend the money, it's going to be on handsome men, instead.

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
Nope, not as far as I'm aware. And if they do, who cares?

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
I've never had an interest in buying a resin girl. The thought of trying one out has never crossed my mind. I'll stick with my boys. :)

    19. 1) What gender do you prefer & why
female! Uh, it's cuter? I just have no interest in a male doll.....

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Nope.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
      I just prefer female dolls?
I don't think there's much to it. Plus, the character i like, and would want the doll to be is female..

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
I shouldn't think so, there are male and female dolls out there for a reason?

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
It is just something I've always preferred, i care very little about my sis's male doll, too.

    20. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer girl dolls. I think the reason is because I find boy dolls more restricting. With wig styles and clothing there just isn't as much versatility to me. While I do love male dolls I don't own any because I just prefer dressing up my dolls who tend to be girly. guys can look great I just think females give more options, and suit my style more. I also love the curves and feminine bodies a lot of female dolls have. It's so fun to photograph :)

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Yes ive had a few people ask and girls is always the answer. Like I said I do like boy dolls I just find it so fun dressing and planning face ups, etc with my girl dolls more than I think I would with boys.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Yes I don't really think there's anything wrong wih it. If someone were to gift me a male doll I would obviously love it just as much as my girls I just prefer females.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Maybe, but I think a lot of people have preferences. I don't find anything wrong with it as long as people aren't being disrespectful to the gender they don't prefer, I'm not sure how others view it though.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I've always known I prefer girls. Ever since I can remember I've been incredibly girly and have loved dresses, lace, etc. I find boys very interesting but not the style that I prefer (floral outfits, lace, frills, skirts, etc) :P
