To those Who Own Only or Prefer One Gender Over the Other

Jun 3, 2008

    1. All my dolls (1 BJD and 3 off topic) are girls. I just prefer how girls look. I'm more attracted to girls, I think they're funner to dress (I don't have anything against sticking dresses on boys but it ain't my thang), and they're just all around funner to play with.

Nobody's asked me about it. Probably because I've just gotten started.

If someone asked me about my preference, I'd just say I like the ladies!

I don't know, it's just always been automatic. When I go looking at dolls, I narrow in on the girls.

    2. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
      female
no idea why, it's hard for me to find boy dolls that I like enough to want to own someday

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
no, it's never come up in conversation

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I don't know....that I just seem to find more girl dolls that I like more easily than boy dolls (or something like that)

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
if they do then they haven't told me about it

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

      when I randomly thought about it, went to add a boy doll that I really loved and noticed that there were no boy dolls there already ^^;

    3. I did have some people at a meet once look at me funny when I said there were only a few male dolls that I wanted. My wish list is mostly female dolls. Part of it is that I think females are more fun to dress and sew for (though I am really excited about the 19th century clothing I am going to sew for my first male doll, who I am ordering this month :D) The other reason is that there are very few male sculpts that look masculine to me, so I have a smaller pool to choose from compared to female dolls. Additionally, most masculine sculpts are larger than MSD size, and I just don't have any dolls of that size yet. (But I will! Claude, you will be mine O_O)

As for when I discovered this preference...I'm not sure it's really a strong gender preference, honestly. More of a...habit preference? Since I want to sew for my dolls, I feel like each doll needs to have something unique, and I just don't have as much interest in male clothing, so I won't need as many male dolls. Plus, as I said above, I have a smaller pool to look at than I do with female dolls. I guess if any of my target companies start producing masculine dolls in smaller sizes (I'm looking at you, Iplehouse), I might end up with more males. I have been collecting less than a year at this point, so we'll see how it goes :)

    4. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I like girl dolls because they are more fun to dress up and are much prettier than boys. They are also more realistic (in relative terms) than most of the boy molds out there. No male-adult molds ACTUALLY look realistic.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I like girls, but I'm always looking for a nice looking boy.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Nope.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I bought a boy doll and was extremely disappointed so I decided to focus on girls because they're so much fun and this hobby is too expensive to keep searching for the right boy.

    5. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Boys. I can probably blame my now-defunct anime obsession for it but I've had a thing for androgynous / feminine male characters in pop culture for years and it never really went away.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
Just tell them its all about preference. Dolls shouldn't have to be literal so have fun with them. :)

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
My mom likes to jokingly call them my girls.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
I knew I'd prefer boy dolls because I never really had any attraction to female characters/dolls so I didn't have to discover it. I did buy a female doll several months ago but I ended up adopting her out to a new home because I couldn't get attached to her.

    6. From the responses, only like 2 out of 10 answers prefer boys...seems like female dolls are more popular and I thought it was all the contrary but I guess I was wrong!

I think I responded to this thread a long time ago but I never answered the questions so here it goes

      1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer boys because I really have a lot of fun dressing my boys and finding something different than just jeans and shirt. But the main reason why I prefer male dolls is because their molds appeal to me more...every time I look for dolls, the boys always grab my attention the most.

And I hate dresses in real life so I'm not that crazy for dresses and frilly outfits. However, I have one girl and I love her a lot.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Nope

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I like boys more because girl dolls have been overdone and I hated barbies when I was a kid, if the BJD world would only create female dolls I would never have gotten into it.

      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
      Nope...as far as I know.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
I never liked female dolls as a kid and I became interested in this hobby when I saw boy dolls...so since always?

    7. Revisiting this thread five years later! I would have to say my answers would still be very similar today, although obviously the hobby has expanded quite a bit. Although I still prefer girl dolls, I have more of a desire to "even out the number" with a much larger number of male sculpts available that I find appealing.

P.S. I have yet to have anyone ask me these questions in real life!

    8. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I prefer females over males. I guess because I feel like I can "do more" with females in terms of customization over guys.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
It's my money. I have one boy that I am wanting but it's more because it's Benedict Cumberbatch than anything else

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      No

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

      Always have.

    9. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I definitely prefer girl dolls. I thought I would prefer boy dolls since when I write fiction, I prefer writing male characters, and when I draw, I prefer drawing male characters, but when I bought my first two dolls (a boy and a girl) I ended up just in love with my girl doll. Of course I love my boy dolls too, but the girl dolls are my faves ;)
Why? For a few reasons. I think they're prettier. I like the wigs better. I like the outfits better. Also, Asian companies tend to make their male dolls sort of... feminine. I love my male MSDs (well, I only have one currently. LOL) but I struggle finding a male SD that I like. I know iplehouse males are more manly but I also find them too realistic to blend into the rest of my doll family.
      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Not really. I think people on the forum have noticed but no one thinks it's weird. I do, after all have two boy dolls ;)
      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
It would depend on if they were a doll collector or not. If they were not, I would say that it's easier to find accessories and such for girl dolls (which is true in a sense. Because I find boy ones boring. LOL)People who are doll collectors, I would be more detailed and talk about the stuff I wrote above under the Why.
      4) Do others think it's weird that you have this preference?
No. To each their own. Some people like a mix, some people like all girls, some people like mostly girls, some people like mostly guys, and some people like all guys. I don't associate any type of gender/sexuality with my choice of dolls, if that's what this question is digging at. I'm not interested in either sex romantically. (not to say that it may not for other people, though)
      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

I touched on this in the first question. My first two dolls were one of each gender. It became clear that the girl was more favored pretty quickly ;)

    10. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
= I prefer girls (especially ones with a cute look) because I guess its a trait I picked up with my art, since I mostly draw girls.....

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      = nope, not yet

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
= I would tell them I like girls because they are cute UvU

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
= Hm I guess not? I do see a large majority of girl dolls..... :/

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
= I guess when I was looking for my first BJD

      The only time I made this exception when I bought my DollZone Kay, but he can pass off as a girl so go figure XD;;;

    11. I usually only buy the Male dolls, Mainly because I have a huge collection of antique girls.

But also I don't really like how the shoes look, women have the monopoly on beautiful shoes in RL but for a doll I have yet to see any!

    12. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Female. Well I myself like girls so it was only natural I surrounded myself with beautiful women even in doll form lol. Actually I have always preferred the girl dolls. I love to sew for them and photograph them.Of course this could change when my Andrew comes home lol.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      Nope.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That it is my preference and I don't question their likes.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
      I would hope not!

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

The first time I found BJDs was around six or seven years ago. My friend asked me to photograph her dolls (a male and female) and I really liked her girl. Then in 2011 my good friend got an Iplehouse Carina and I had to have my own. Now almost three years and three ladies later I am waiting for my first male doll. I told myself if I was ever going to get a male doll he would have to be a man's man. :)

    13. 1. Females - except for my one baby doll male. Most of the adult male dolls are a bit too "effeminate" for my taste.
      2. No - no one cares.
      3. I would tell them to mind their own business.
      4. No - like I said, no one really cares. And if they do? Ask me if I care.
      5. I like cute clothes and pigtails and bows and buttons and pink. That pretty much means hardly any boys will make their way into my collection. But Kaye Wiggs' MSD Maurice is ADORABLE!!!!

Sorry if I am very "direct." I am a native New Yorker and we don't tend to "sugar coat" things EVER.

    14. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? I prefer male dolls. Why? I'm not sure. I've always preferred males, which is funny since I'm female and I'm in a relationship with another girl. But that's how I've always been. A majority (by which I mean 99%) of the characters I make are male, I prefer to roleplay male characters, and in turn, I prefer male dolls. I also like saying "my boys" when I refer to my resin kids too, it sounds cute. :)
My girlfriend also has more boys than girls, but I don't know if that's her preference or what her reasoning is.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
My coworkers have pointed it out a couple of times.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
The same thing I stated above. I'm not sure why, it's just what I like.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
One of my coworkers did question it a little. In a non-intrusive/accusatory manner, she said, "it's funny, that you and your girlfriend who obviously like human girls, prefer boy dolls." But she didn't question it further after I shrugged and told her what I've already said in this reply.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?
I just never found a girl doll that made me go, "ohhhhh I really want her!" and made me swoon.
There's a lot that I see that I think are adorable and I'd love to have a girl to dress up in pretty, frilly things (and the shoes, THE SHOES), but with the cost of this hobby and all, I'm not just going to get a girl doll for the sake of having one, you know? She has to be one that I find myself going to look at every day, thinking about how I can buy her and how much I want her and what I would put her in, etc., just like how I did with my boys. So far, she hasn't shown up.
I do feel though, that if I do get a girl, she's going to some sort of fantasy themed doll rather than a normal human one. Like a bunny girl or a little robot or something like that. I can't see myself with a normal human female sculpt.

    15. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

I am a male and I prefer male dolls. I see girl dolls and i admire the beauty and artistry but i think generally people respond to their own gender. Also it may be a societal pressure that it is weird if guy was into female dolls. But i am also new to the hobby and do eventually want to own at least one female doll. just haven't connected with any yet.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

Not really. I've talked to some friends and they are guys and they think it is interesting but they may think it odd if I got female doll.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

I think there is a self reflection when you are in any hobby. You are attracted to yourself and things like yourself at very subconscious level.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

      No not really.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

It goes back to childhood I think. And also i've collected many items over the years. Robots, action figures, random japanese anime figures. With the dolls I think that you create a character that is an extension of yourself to some way. it lets you express a different side of yourself.

    16. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
Considering of my eleven dolls ten are male I would say I prefer male. It is the same way with my rp life as it is in my doll life. I prefer to play males to females, just as I prefer male dolls to female ones. Even my one girl doll is not as super girly as she could be. I think one of my boys is actually more demanding and a bit frillier than she is.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
Not until this post, no not really.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
That I just happen to prefer male dolls to female ones.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Not particularly then again I came into this form of doll collection after several years as a slash only rp'er, so I have a hard time seeing a preference for males as weird.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?
Seven dolls into my collection I had nothing but male dolls. Added a girl, and then three more boys.

    17. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?

Female dollies! I am a super girly girl and shopping for a girl is much more fun IMO. I also find the female body more aesthetically pleasing.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

      Nope :)

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

It's my personal preference and there isn't anything I can do about it. I can't control what I am pulled towards.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

Nope. I think its quite normal to have a preference or not have a preference. Weird to me is not liking dolls at all lol.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

Immediately. Not sure I will ever own a male doll. If I do happen to get one, it would only be to compliment my girl doll as a couple.

    18. 1) What gender do you prefer & why? Currently I have 9 dolls (and one on order) and only one is female.I guess I lean strongly towards male dolls. It's not that I don't want to shell my female characters, I'm just really picky. So far I haven't found many that have the look I want.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      It's never come up.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference? That I like female dolls but I just haven't found the right ones yet. I find male characters easier to shell (for whatever reason)

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference? Nope.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other? My 2nd doll was a boy and from there the male doll population just exploded.

    19. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I only have male bjds and I have no intention of getting any girls. I have never wanted any girls and all my OCs are male. I do have a mixture in my off topic dolls though including transgender.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?

      No.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?

That I have all male OCs as well as a couple of characters who are not mine (Loki and Thor) who are also male. I would also say that I have never wanted a female bjd as I just have no interest in them.

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?

      Not at all.

      5) When & How did you discover that you preferred this gender over the other?

For as long as I can remember. I even had a male doll (GI Joe) when I was a kid and liked him more than any female dolls I was given. In fact I still have him and all the others are long gone.

    20. 1) What gender do you prefer & why?
I looked the most for a Boy Doll even I like some Girls too. But also I like Anime/Manga and Arts of some Artist who draw Asian Boys with long hair. I think because I like this I go for it to have my own Doll looking like one of those Boys.

      2) Do people ever ask you about your preference?
      No. No one asked me.

      3) What would you tell someone who asked you about your preference?
I guess I would answer just like I did on 1.)

      4) Do other's think it's weird that you have this preference?
Not that I know.I think my husband would ask me if I would prefer the opposite gender.

      5) When & How did you discover that you prefered this gender over the other?

I think while I played Sims because I have mostly Boys in my Game and can better write stories about them as with Girls. So I guess it's more easy for me to have doll Boys if I want to make Doll Stories.
