Too much too fast?

Aug 19, 2009

    1. I tell my friends to wait a month, and if you still love a mold after then, you should go for it. It takes me almost a year before I can get a doll, purely for money purposes, but it gives me alot of time to think about what i really want.

    2. For me, yes ^^;;
even though I would love to get a bunch of dolls I would wait between.
I have a friend who got like (I don't know the exact number I'm exaggerating) but she got something like 4 dolls in one year after she already had 3.
I was overcome with AMAZING jealousy XDD But I'm happy for her I guess, but I just think that's wayyyy too much in one go haha

    3. I was reading this and thought "Four isn't that m- Oh, wait..." :sweat

    4. Do you think that's too much too fast?
Well, it sorta depends on how you look at it. Can you afford the dolls? Do you really love and want those dolls? Are you sure that you're into the hobby? For me, ordering that many in a small amount of time wouldn't be possible.
Even if it was, I'd feel bad for ordering them so close together. I don't know why, but after I got Yume I was considering buying another doll and the idea just felt...wrong. Now that it's been a while since I've ordered her, I'm going to probably buy another doll in June. Spacing out the purchasing times of my dolls just...makes me feel better.

How long was it till you got your first BJD?
I learned about them summer 2008 and didn't want one, but decided I did summer of 2009. I waited maybe 5/6 months to get her. She was my Christmas/birthday present.

What do you do to stop the urges?
Don't look at dolls for sale. :sweat It works for me. If I do see a doll I want, then I try to talk myself out of it and think of other cheaper things I can spend my money on. Like clothes for me and my current dolls, costumes, candy, other stuff that I've been wanting...

    5. Do you think that's too much too fast?
Well, I can't really talk. I got my first doll in February of last year. Then I got my second in August. Then I got my third in December. And now I'm working on my fourth for June. That's like, 4 in a year and 3 months. ^^; By the way, I'm 15 years old. So it is a bit much and it is a bit fast.
How long was it till you got your first BJD?
I found out about them in like...November? (two years ago). I ordered my first in February and recieved him in the same month.
How has it been since you got your first?
Good. Great, even. I've gotten two more dolls and for the most part have been able to maintain all their clothing/makeup/and accessory needs. The only thing I completely fail at is getting them shoes.
What do you do to stop the urges?
I try and think of A), my other hobbies, or B) that I have enough. I also collect Sailor Moon stuff, anime figurines, and I'm into Lolita (all three of which can be just as if not more financially distressing as the BJD collecting hobby). I try and rotate in cycles what hobby I bought from last and what hobby I'll buy from next. I have this knack of maintaining all of them though, which is a bit odd. I try and remind myself that not everyone has a priveleged life like I do, and I try to stop myself from wanting so much so constantly.

    6. I am torn on this one part of likes getting dollies right away I usually know when I see mold that fits a character perfectly and ones that I know I will be horribly upset if I don't get because they r perfect. I started te hobby in july of last year and I now have a total four. Part of my problem though is that I have OCD tendencies with things being in muliptles of 3 and it makes me really anxious when I am not at a muliptle of 3. So In some respects I think I do sometimes rush into things but that is what friens r for to buy mistakes heehee well that and to care about u.

    7. I feel like I'm going too fast.. I bought Lili in october, then got Zack in January (though he's just a head) and I'm getting another head soon..

    8. Do you think that's too much too fast? I think this really depends on the person. I started collecting in december of 08 (ordered my first!) who didnt arrive until around may, but since ive got at least parts of 7 dolls and i dont think its too much. Really if finances allowed I would buy up all the ones I want now then be able to relax and get clothes without so much pining lol
How long was it till you got your first BJD? about 6 months from discovery to order, then close to another 6 months to actually get him.
How has it been since you got your first? I love em! He has a family now and a big developed story.. weve gone through some tough times in that year but hes very precious to me. dolls as a whole Ive used to keep me focus and goal-oriented. Its also a driving force to keep my grades up and get trough college lol
What do you do to stop the urges? I dont lol I try to rationalize a little as far as who the doll would become, what style, if they are too similar to another doll on my wishlist. But overall if im creative enough to shove em into my story then they go down on the wishlist XD Someday Ill get em all!

    9. I dunno...that might be too much for me, but, then again, I have been kinda piling on the dolls here. I got two dolls in three months, I'm going to order two more in a matter of weeks (hopefully) and then try for another one at the end of the summer O.o I think maybe the only difference is I actually waited for my first doll to get here before I decided to order another, and now that he's here I'm planning the others. I think I would get overwhelmed if I had four/five dolls coming in at once, just because I need time to make each one "mine" and get content with them before I bring in a new "project".
But, if you're comfortable with it, I say go for it :) I wish I could order dolls one after the other like that, I'm so obsessed with this hobby O.O

    10. Nope. I'm a pretty fast mover and I know what I like, so I don't see anything wrong with collecting dolls as fast as I want them. 30 dolls in 5 years sure doesn't sound very fast to me, but everybody's mileage will vary.

I too started off buying several in a row right away-- because as soon as I had my first one, I knew that this was what I wanted to do, & I knew that I wanted to collect more. (In fact, I knew immediately from Day 1 that I wanted to collect all of the Volks Tokyo Boys, and that it would take me awhile but I didn't care. I didn't know that I wouldn't stop after that point, of course. ^^)

If you collect LEs, or art-dolls with certain release periods, you also don't always have a choice of when to buy them. Unless you decide you'd rather take your chances later on the secondhand market, you buy them when they are available. But I enjoy the hunt, the chase, the bidding-wars, all of that, it's as much fun as having the doll home.

      Give in to them. :chocoberry

    11. Do you think that's too much too fast? Maybe, I didn't realize how big the collection was becoming, and the last 2 dolls that I bougth were a total disappointment, and it's hard when the dolls you really like are limited most of the time... although I'm planning to expand my collection once more :sweat

How long was it till you got your first BJD? It was love at first sight I didn't spend a lot researching, maybe 3 months. A friend of mine was on a trip at Tokyo and I asked him to buy me a Nono, I wasn't sure if he can do the buying and in the mean time I ordered a Shoyo cat from DZ, so I got 2 dolls at the same time.

How has it been since you got your first? Maybe it looks like I'm in a hurry but its fine for me

What do you do to stop the urges? xe.com helps me a lot

    12. i was a little worried about the too much too fast thing myself because im used to saving every penny for a very long time before i can get a doll, because of this i have LOTS of time to think things through and plan all the little details out. (as a result i have ONE doll right now (ordering my second *technically 3rd* doll in about 2 weeks) but i have fuully thought out characters for 12 or more other dolls.

i would not mind ordering two dolls at the same time (and if i can stand the wait while i save up for the other i may do that a few times when i have multiple dolls from a certain company) and i wouldnt mind if i were waiting on say 4 dolls at once? but only in certain situations like ordering two limited editions with long wait times and then ordering a regular edition doll

im no longer worried about to much to fast because im going to make sure they have wigs eyes and outfits before buying another doll.

however in the case of the OP. i really do think thats too much to fast. mostly because if you have not even received your first how can you be sure this is the right hobby for you? and the way i look at it, the most important doll to bond with is your first, i think spending lots of time getting to know how bjds work is an important way to do so.

    13. Do you think that's too much too fast?
Depends on your view, and other variables as someone else pointed out.

How long was it till you got your first BJD?

However long it took me to get MP access. Then a few weeks of layaway and the seller shipped him to me. That was in March. I now have two on layaway, and I'm waiting for a head.

How has it been since you got your first?
Great. I love him. He's gorgeous.

What do you do to stop the urges?
I worry that buying too many in one year will make me appreciate them less. So, after I get a body for the head I will most likely be done for this year. I have 12 characters I need to fill in all. I'm pacing myself.

    14. Do you think that's too much too fast?
Maybe, but as long as you love them all equally and stuff, you should be fine. It might just be the way you buy dolls, and everyone buys and looks at dolls and stuff differently, so it's more personal than anything.

How long was it till you got your first BJD?
Pffft. Man, I dun really remember. Each doll, if I'm lucky, takes a year to buy. Mostly because I only get ten bucks a week, so it MAKES me go slow and stuff. It gives me time to make sure which doll I want next and which doll I REALLY want. I know I always hate the feeling of having to wait and stuff too, but I'm also thankful that I'm forced to pace myself because then I won't get everyone and everything I want all at once!

How has it been since you got your first?
      Ohh, Jee, three, four years?

What do you do to stop the urges?
I simply stop looking at them and go do something else! or else I just enjoy and put time and effort into the dolls I already have. They always need lovin' anyway. <3

    15. I never order more than one doll at the time. And mean while when I am waiting for that doll to come home I am way there looking at other dolls. It usually doesn`t take that long after I have gotten the new doll home until I am starting to think about ordering my next. I find this hobby very addictive. Every time I am planning my next doll/ ordering my next doll I get this kinda kick. It`s like a drug haha. And also I have made up these different characters. Like I have a doll family that is not yet complete. A little pet dollie that I want a another pet friend for. A little girl that needs a little sister. And a boy that wants a friend.

All these things does so it is kinda hard waiting to long to order the next doll on the wish list.

Like my MNM Mana-Sama . I did not want him to be the only J rocker and MNM in the house so I ordered a MNM Gackt to keep him company. And I might want to get him a little daughter some day to. My Ail Elijah fast became MNM Mana-Sama`s best friend when he arrived. Elijah is a typical Oshare and Decora boy. And that lead to wanting to get him a Cyber Punk friend (Ail Berthram). And last we have my Dollmore kid girl Vian . She is getting a Luts Honey Delf little sister soon.

So yeah have you first ordered your first doll it is very hard to stop. There are dolls every where tempting you like candy haha:chocoberry.

    16. Its a heady rush the first year in the Forums - being bombarded with temptation left right and centre... every page has something more adorable than the previous so yeah... you have to steel yourself against that very temptation whilst still loving your hobby!!

Do you think that's too much too fast?

That depends entirely on the individual really - If it were me when I had a really good cash-flow then nope I dont hink so - I onyl think its too-much too-fast if a credit card is the primary funding source then its a yes...

How long was it till you got your first BJD?

Before BJD's I had a lot of Heidi Ott originals so resin dolls were nothing new but I had a "BJD" head before I had a doll the > original Luts Nanuri - but my first real doll was my Elfdoll Wu and he was 6 months from *click* I love him to *click* I buy him - then another month before he arrived(super fast for Elfdoll at that time) then I had another 5-6 within the space of a year and a half and Wu moved on in that time as well.

How has it been since you got your first?

I rarely indulge in "impulse" doll buying - I plan a lot and while my plans shift and change depending on what dolls are on my wish-list that could go on sale etc... I find it really exciting to anticipate that next dollar saved towards a goal. That and I'm flat out sculpting my own LOL - that helps a lot

What do you do to stop the urges?

Start browsing the galleries instead of the Marketplace.... I found that 9 out of 10 times I logged on in my first year I was trolling the MarketPlace - now I only go there if I am looking for something specific or need a price comparission.... However reading through the galleries can either enhance a desire to have a particular doll or completely ruin it.... I had a reall lust for a CP Lishe for ages - but after seeing her RL pics from another 30 or so owners I realised she just didnt do it for me... Same with Supia Roda - I thought she was all I ever wanted in a doll but the more I saw Rosy - the more her features appealed to me, so now she Roda has stepped off the list and Rosy is firmly cemented on becomming more secure everytime I see her in the Gallery :)

    17. i need to stop buying dolls ~~~~~~~~~~~~ now that's all i keep telling myself XDDDD

    18. I have decided to buy as many dolls as I want until there is no more room for more in my room. Thats when I stop:lol::sweat BJDs really is that important to me.

    19. You can always give their own room to your dolls xD

    20. Do you think that's too much too fast? Everyone's different so don't be so worried! I personally can't handle getting dolls that fast! Just keep in mind your responsibilities ( eg : If you're a student, studies come first ) and your finances.

How long was it till you got your first BJD? I've known about bjds for a few years, and I recently got my first early last year, but I didn't do much with it cause of exams.
How has it been since you got your first? Hmm, there has been some sales ( sold a DL Noir and selling a Doll Love Sliver Goal ) , but I still have my first doll , KDF Aru, and I currently have a Dollmore Vian, Ariadoll banana and a CTY boron! I will be adding a few more SDs and hopefully a YOSD. Personally, the maximum number of dolls I buy a year would be 5 FULL sets. That's pretty unlikely also imo.

What do you do to stop the urges? I don't really need to ! hahah! I have my cosplay and figurine collection to stop me 8D /broke/
