Types of sculpting you have a soft spot for?

Jul 4, 2022

    1. I completely relate to loving beautifully sculpted, unique gesture hands!! There's just something so pretty, elegant, and eye-catching about them.

My biggest weakness is when a doll has a sweet smile. I'm always getting tempted by dolls that are gently smiling and have a cheerful or friendly look, especially if it's not too exaggerated.

Another thing I love: When a doll has a more mature body and the small details (like veins) are sculpted in just right, like tiny classical Greek statues... I can't help but admire the craftsmanship!!

    2. I'm drawn to male faces which have the appearance of a gentle calm strength. Also a bit of intelligence, as if they are deep in thought about something. I don't like overly big eyes or big lips. I like natural facial features. If the corners of the mouth turn up ever so slightly in a subtle smile, all the better.
For female faces I have similar taste, but I'm usually looking for females to couple with my male dolls, so they need to compliment the dolls I already have.
Oddly I'm drawn to elf ears, though I don't always think of them as elves exactly.

It's easier to say what I don't like, but that's for a different thread. :)

    4. I'm drawn to semi-stylized fantasy dolls. I love elf ears, and narrow "dreaming" or "romantic" eyes.

    5. Big noses all the way!

    6. For bodies I have a soft spot for exaggerated inverted triangle. Like really buff upper body. Really into the THCC shoulders haha. I adore bodies like iplehouse’s HID.

For heads, I don’t have one specific thing/type I look for. I kinda go for the handsome type? I like a more mature look with jawline and defined cheekbone. I also like them to look like a anime show villain haha.

    7. I like dolls with really long limbs like the doll chatau dolls. I also like dolls with soft looking neotenous features.

    8. I love unique expressions. Fairyland has been doing it for me lately with the snarling, pouty, and angry faces. The sneering face is my absolute favorite by far.

    9. Most of the time if I love a sculpt it's for an undefinable "YASSSSSSSSSSSSS!" my brain does when I see it. Very few have given me this feel so far, tho quite a few are *close*.

I, personally, can't stand the "neutral face" or (because I'm vastly preferential to boys) the default bedroom eyes look that the guys get. Open eyes are a must. I want them to have feeling and expression....but not too much. My first purchase was an Impldoll Joshua, for example. I also adore the gentle smile that Dream Valley Vine has. But it can be something as simple as the line of the nose that makes me love a sculpt (Dollzone Gray). I want shape to the face....but not too much.

As far as bodies go, lithe lithe lithe....Dream Valley B4-04 makes my brain so very, very happy lol.

    10. Pouty lips and fantasy parts!

If you slap on some horns/hooves/wings/claws/extra arms/eyes etc etc there is a 99% chance I will love it, be it typically ‘beautiful’ or a full on Eldritch terror. Combine that with unnatural skin tones and *chefs kiss*

    11. Hmm, where to start...

Getting the most awkward one out of the way—I have a particular affectation for SD mature male bodies that, erm...have moveable bits. Magnetic, strung, on a built-in pivotal joint—I'm there for it all. :wiggleI just am not the biggest fan of the boys with the ones who remain...static :XD::sweat

Mature male sculpts: Whether they be rugged, daring, a Casanova type—I'm just a sucker of the more masculine types. Bishies and bright-eyed boys are just fine, but I prefer mine mature and with detailed character.
      Subcategories that tie into this:
      • refined/noticeable cheek structure
      • furrowed brow
      • narrow eyes
      • daring smirk (someday I'll acquire IOS Belcanto—)
      • unique nose structure
      • unique ethnic features
      mature female sculpts:
This one I'm much pickier about. I'm not really a doe-eyed or girl next door vibe fan. I need the features to be unique, profound, have character—and details.
A list of what that entails:
      • strong, well-defined cheekbones. Think Anjelica Houston, or Anjelina Jolie. (note: I'm not a fan of gaunt faces though, i.e.: Popovy)
      • long, angular face (not a fan of the soft and round aesthetic, tbh)
      • defined nose/nose with character (so many buttony, petite noses out there already—)
      • generally any female that doesn't look soft or gentle. I'm especially drawn to the warrior build.
      • snarky expressive—devious smile, hints of mischief, or even with hints of scorn or disapproval.
      • with all the generic, soft and rounded faces out there, it's always striking to find a female with unique ethnic features.
Elf ears: I'm not always drawn to every bjd with elf ears (meaning I don't necessarily desire them for my collection, but it doesn't mean I wouldn't admire/appreciate them), but it's something that will definitely catch my eye very quickly. I especially have a soft spot for mature masculine male elves (which seem to be a rare find amongst the bunches out there, so many have softer features instead...). Same could be said for mature female sculpt to a degree.

Cats: been a lifelong cat lover, and I just fall in love with anything feline. I'm more drawn to traditional-structured bjd cats, especially with flexible poseability. Cats, kittens, any of the variety of wild cats—:D
—bonus if that cat also has wings. Ever since I read Ursula Le Guine's Catwings series as a kid, I've been fond of anything involving cats with wings. An extra heaping of bonus points if they're bird-like wings. Bat wings and any variety of insect wings are interesting, but I'm all in it for the bird-wings:love.

    12. I'm weak for a good nose... it's hard to find a really big or aquiline nose when you collect only 1/4 or smaller, though.

Elegantly posed hands. Realism is a plus, love to see some veins and tendons, but even a pudgy little childlike hand can have that perfect, graceful pose.

    13. Mature realism - like, uncanny valley realism - in female sculpts. I love pretty much everything Iplehouse makes, which lead me to Impldoll, which lead me to Supia Doll, which lead me to SartoriaJ...

    14. I love slightly parted lips with teeth showing. It's so cute to me! I'm also a fan of thick thighs for male or female.

    15. I've noticed I've been particularly interested in bigger eyes too! I love the look of narrower or smaller eyes, but also I wanna show off whatever pretty eyes I have so I also keep looking at big and wide eyes LOL

Oh I ADORE the style of older BJDs, there's something so charming about that not-quite-modern-anime-but-not-quite-realism dolly-ness to them, they feel so incredibly "doll" if that makes sense?

LOL yeah I imagine we all have many sculpting peeves

Yeah I've noticed that! It sucks 'cause I really like the 1/4 size, but I wish I could find more strong noses like aquiline and bumps and wide noses especially but I'll even settle for like, a big chunky triangle like my own nose in real life LOL but alas, 1/4 scale dolls tend to have skinny, pointy, upturned noses orz I guess there's always additive mods if I ever get brave enough!

    16. Are you sure we can't convince you to come to the dark side (1/3 scale dolls)? Impl Doll has some impressive shnozzes - I personally have Sicily and Leona, and they have nice, prominent noses.

    17. For me, 1/3 scale is out. I'm too short and I have limited space. The iple fashion scale is as big as I can go-- luckily, for the boys, it means there are some great options for noses. I just feel bad that there's not a girl with an aquiline nose in their lineup right now, for one of the characters I plan on shelling. They have one who has the right vibe in every other respect.

    18. Oouuuugh I've never looked at Impldoll's 1/3 scales but MAN they are pretty! The main reason I'm hesitant about getting too much into larger scales is mostly space issues but who knows, someday in the future I may have the space to collect 'em!! The dark side indeed, 1/3 scale always is so tempting~

    19. Elf ears

Even if I'm not interested in the sculpt, I like to see how different artists interpret them. There are a lot of variations in terms of length, shape, detailing, positioning and such and it's fun to see the possibilities. :3nodding:

    20. I love it when female bodied dolls have a bit of a soft looking tummy. like the old Greek statues of goddesses. i think its really beautiful and important to have soft curvier figures... Also the possibilities of a doll with head magnets makes my mouth water!
