Variation of Boy Bodies....

Apr 1, 2007

    1. I know of very, very few bodies that are "body-builder" type; and ironically, if you forgo the muscles, they look like scrawny teens (Hello, SSDF!).

The regular EID "superhero" body is not superhero at all - it's just a more fit, more broad male frame. If you want superhero, look at Volks' dollfies. Who are, by the way, japanese.

I know a few years ago I was all over feminine men. Now, the girly ones? Ew. If I wanted to look at flat-chested girls, I'll look at flat-chested girls. In the mean time, give me men. I still do like more feminine men, but they gotta look male. And that means, they dress nicely in man clothing, since open shirts and the like isn't really for them. I am also very convinced that slim only works for cat-like females. Cat-like males need to be more masculine, if we're going to stay true to their animal nature. (Tall and proud). (Unless they're boys. But then it's the age factor - I don't expect any guys my age and younger to be all buff and macho. As a matter of fact, I don't like that at all.)

I also think that the "aesthetic" depends on target and age group. I'm certain that they don't use twinkledinks in advertisements for men (As a matter of fact, in all japanese ads I've seen the men are pretty masculine + your usual girly japanese girl), or movies aimed at men/boys/some women/girls. From what Japanese guys I know have explained to me, it's not a matter of looking androgynous but a matter of looking like you look after yourself.

    2. Hey, the more the merrier :) what's the use in discussing something if we all agree with each other?

My previous post was kind of rushed (I was on my lunchbreak at work)so I might have been unclear on some points. I'm not saying that girly boys are completely unpopular in asia, but I also don't think they are the only desired thing either. For instance I can't really picture middle aged women being fans of feminine men. In fact, most of my coworkers are from the phillipines, and the women over 30 all oogle the shirtless muscular construction workers working on our building and don't give a second glance to the metrosexuals, or generally femme guys that come through. The younger ones however will date the super skinny/girly guys. In the US we've had feminine actors and boybands that were extremely popular, but the ones going to see them were almost entirely teenage girls. I talked about manga before, and I seriously doubt the authors would draw muscular people if they thought they were ugly or weird. Those comics aren't marketed to the west, they are marketed to asia.

I don't think something should be judged as being off-topic just for having a different body type. Different ages and builds look good together, and even though they are different you can tell they are in the same style. It would be extremely boring if every doll had to have a sd13, delf, or similar body. Those bodies were purposefully made to look like a 13 year old boy, and they succeed. They look good and all, but I need variety. I think it's especially important for people that make their dolls of characters. If I have an elite, battle-hardened warrior character, I can't use a young boy's body for him.

When this thread was started, we had no real muscular dolls. We had extremely toned dolls, but they were also very skinny. Now we have EIDs and I couldn't be happier. They look strong, mature, and most of all healthy ^_^

    3. In the end, this is really all just personal preference. Some older women/men like the more "manly" look, and others don't. Just as some younger women/men like more androgynous looking men, and some don't. I don't think a certain age defines ones style or look, necessarily. Plently of those girly-boys from Japan (referring to the rock/metal genre, not pop) are 30, 40+ years old, and have audiences full of people in the same age range. XD Personally, I think both looks are awesome, and if they started making even more shapes and sizes, that would be amazing, too! I doubt I would ever call any look, style or shape gross or say "ew". To each his own! Love what you love. ^_^ Hurray for variety! :aheartbea

    4. :D:D OMG!!!! I didn't even know that exsisted! hm if i could see how the body looked...

    5. I am really annoyed by the lack of variation. I am trying to doll a character of mine, Akoni, and he is NOT a twiggy lightweight. It's proving very difficult to find a doll for him because of the huge amount of effeminate male dolls. I have no problem with them in general, but I do wish it would be more balanced...

    6. I hear you there...sleek and powerful=sexy to me! I needed a body for a character who is supposed to be a cat burglar, so I was really looking for a dancer type, and dancers have muscles! I ended up with the Unidoll Real body, and absolutely love the way it looks (although I agree with the above poseability complaints, at least with the torso...his arms and legs are great). Otherwise, I tend to like the normal range of skinny guys we tend to see (as long as they aren't too thin). I will say that the EIDs are an impressive sculpt, and I'm glad that the option is out there, even if they are a bit too buff for any of my characters.

Weighing in on the Asian aesthetic, I do believe that there is certainly quite a range of acceptable body types, especially since the body is far from the only factor that should be considered when discussing an entire continent's supposed aesthetic. I mean, aesthetics change over time as well; look back at some old Japanese woodblock prints of samurai and court ladies and then compare them to aspects of what has been discussed as a modern aesthetic (sorry, the historian/ art history buff in me is coming out).

    7. I knew he looked like someone... I was thinking the Joker, but no... but he LOOKED like SOMEONE!!!! LOL, you nailed it :D That had to be on purpose!

    8. I think that Dollshe with their David Knucchi may have answered your wishes.
He does seem to look a little weird in clothes, but perhaps he's just a sculpt that just needs to be naked, or barely clothed gladiator style.

    9. I just wish that, whatever the body type, they'ed stop making the thighs look like tubes that were just stuck on. At any rate if I was still buying resin dolls I'd definitely go for one that had the Rock's body type, especially if it was MSD size.

    10. i do prefer the boy bodies to be more on the muscular side but i think the body builder type would be a little too much

    11. It's the matter of taste again. I prefer regular skinny bodies, 'cause that is more aesthetic for me even than muscles. And they suit my characters perfectly.
I also think that's the same media thing messing around - if people around the world were told that muscles/chubby is beautiful instead of thinness, dolls would have to fit. We're all spoiled by this, imo, there's always a pressure to fit in and always will be, and this is just how fashion works every time. These times are thin-fashioned and everybody has to cope.
That's why i don't like iplehouse. They are not as slim as i want my dolls to be. I don't like their bodies.

    12. Ehhh.... Not really. I find men with too much muscle a bit unattractive. The body that my boy has is enough.

    13. The boy body most older looking dolls have is just based on Asian boys. They are lanky. Some of them are as thick as an ironing board, but somehow they have abs. It really doesn't have anything to do with being more andro looking or anything like that, it's just how men are.... in Japan at least. As for the faces, I meet 30 year old men who look 16, and 16 who look 30. Actually, here between 16-35 they kinda look the same.

    14. Omg then I could have a Jet from Cowboy Bebop lookalike *drooling*
