Victorian Winter Dolls discussion

Jun 30, 2010

    1. I am. No words. Thank you so much everyone.

    2. I'm so sorry MuseStar

    3. Thanks VictorianWinter :) I'm just not good with death. But I have a focal point with my Madison coming.

I got caught up, my vampires that I have speak from a different time, they really aren't blood drinkers as we know of, but I'm sure they do (when I'm not looking...........I pass out at the sight of blood) ;)

My Madison was born in 1580ish...........became a Revolutionary War soldier because of his great strengths and foresight on the war to help them win America. I have yet another vampire that likes teddy bears ;)

    4. I'm not either :(

To Anneke and all those interested in my Black Resin:
I have amazing news!! My resin's color stays even when you sand it! :B I posted it in my blog:
      http://victorianwinter.com/blog.php
I don't know if this is just a fluke or not, so I will be sanding the other pair. I'm also tempted to cast an Odette head in black and sand it too, just to make sure.
I'm really amazed with this resin...Doesn't change color in the sun (so far up to 3 hours) doesn't break around joint areas, I have yet to see it get dented, fingers are extremely hard to break, and now color doesn't seem to be affected by sanding!
I'm rather giddy about it :3

    5. Ah that's exciting...maybe we'll see a black fae sooner than we thought (she said, with hope in her heart!)

Hypothetically, if you were to make an all black resin doll, would the cost be higher than if it was cast in normal resin? I know larger companies tend to charge more for them due to the increase in production time because of how careful they have to be with it.

A little OT, but I had to comment: Baby oil does some pretty amazing things, does it?! :nowords:

    6. I hope so!!

Yes that is true. Even though I've seen some companies sand the seams on do-not-sand dolls. But if mine acts just fine around sanding and even seam sanding, I won't be charging extra :)

    7. So the dye soaked through the resin overnight to make an even coat? I wonder if big companies didn't try the baby oil trick, and that's why they don't sand. Is there any chance that the dye would soak out of the resin or fade out? (Sorry for so many questions; I don't know much about resin/dye/sculpting ^^).

    8. I was really surprised to see people getting tanned Aphan's and such from Soom with large patches of "ashy" skin from where Soom sanded them. Does baby oil work on any of these patches or was this something you tried on your own resin? I always heard that oil was a huge no-no for resin.

    9. LadyRoselie: I'm not quite sure what happened exactly with that, the resin will still extremely soft when I pulled it out of the mold. It could be that the resin was still curing when I cut it, and the dye was finished being pushed out to the edges. But then when I sanded it it did go lighter, but with baby oil it did go back to normal. I know that my resin is a LOT different then what other companies use...
I have headcaps that I casted in black and purple that I have sitting in a box, no color has come out nor have they faded any. I will put them out into the sun to see if there are any possible fading. (Thats ok! Its really hard to find any information on it, its more of a learn as you go type thing) I'm also going to cut one of them in half, to see if the resin is actually through the whole thing or just on the outer layers.

Anneke: I've only used it on my resin (I don't have any other company doll thats tanned), I'm rather experimental with my resin because I like knowing what it can do. I've never had any problems with baby oil on it (I use baby oil in my mold making to smooth out the clay, and when I do junk casts I've never had a problem with it before) and it dries up completely (from what I can tell, I always wash my parts if I do use it)

Hmm...I would say if you see someone with it, ask them to try it out on their headcap (I know those are sanded somewhere) only if they're willing, since like I said I've only worked with my type of resin and I would feel terrible if something did happen to their doll.

Oil based things are big no-no's for resin (Like oil pastels) Because they give the dye the ability to seep into the resin and stain it. The baby oil I use is fragrant and color free.

    10. Thanks for the information VW! It is very exciting to hear about all the different colors you are trying. I have one gray doll but I am too afraid to try sanding her :sweat But the seam lines don't really bother me.

I'm really looking forward to Gwendolyn! It's so fun to be "in on" the creative process of an artist through this thread :)

    11. Ah okay, that's interesting. Resin is so mysterious to me, lol, this is really interesting to hear about the differences. I have dolls from five different companies (Dolkot, Soom, Souldoll, Resinsoul, Camilia Dynasty) and I find that each one's resin is quite different from the others.

The resin I like the most is my Dolkot's since it's got this translucent look to it as well as a more "toothy" feel. She posed a lot better than my Soom girls because of this toothy texture (her joints "grab" better when I pose her) and the NS skin tone is really lovely. In fact, the more different doll resins I come across I find that I like my Dolkot doll more and more. Since she's an elf she might fit in with my resin family after all :)

I'm excited to see how Odette's resin compares to the rest of my brood. It's exciting that all these dolls are resin and yet there's still such a wide variety of textures and colors :)

    12. LadyRoselie: Your welcome! I love playing with different colors...I would like to try to match other companies resins, but I'm not sure how well my doll would hybrid with theirs lol ^^;
:D I'm glad you're enjoying it! I don't like keeping people in the dark about stuff X3

Anneke: I agree :3 Resin is fun to play with (Even though at times it's difficult to work with x_x)

Is it more like french resin?
I know a lot of the 'toothyness' is from the finishing of the final doll before molding. A trick I've learned from Twigling is to spray it with MSC before molding it to give it a slight toothyness after molding. When I first started molding (around...3-4 years ago x_x) I would sand them til they were shiny lol. Back then even MSC wouldn't give it any tooth XD
Dollkot has some really gorgeous dolls but I havn't been able to see any in person yet :( Once I get more organized with my company I'm planning to attend more doll/anime conventions so hopefully I can see some there :)

    13. oooooh VW a drow elf!!! can you make a drow elf? I know so many people who love droww... and gettting a black doll seems soooo hard!!! you are having amazing results tho!

    14. That'd be great if you could attend more conventions--any thoughts on if you're going to the one in Southern California on December 4th? I'm trying to talk the husband into a Disneyland trip that weekend, thinking maybe I can pack this in and get a two-fer out of the road trip!

I would love to show you my Dolkot in person (if she hasn't found a new home by then) so you can feel the thoothiness for yourself! I don't think it's french resin, I noticed a lot of people mark Dolkot resin's toothiness as a flaw :( I just think it's lovely though. Even though all my dolls have different resin, most of them are shiny and smooth compared to her. I think I like it because of the way it catches the light, it makes her flesh look fleshier, almost like she has real pours in her skin. It's a great effect, but if it's the byproduct of an inferior casting process it's probably hard to duplicate =/

    15. Oh dear...black elves. I may have to have one. :o)

    16. Yeah...if VW starts doing black dolls I'll have to hang up my plans for ever getting another company's dolls ever again...

    17. i know how you feel Anneke!!! Ill want some of VW's faerys... male and female... and Ill want one for my drow Athela! [IMG]

    18. Woooow. I just looked up this doll to see what she looked like.
She's so unique and happy! Her impness is so charming. I like. x3

    19. VW, I finally got to your Blog and drooled. LOL

I was really impressed with the black black black. It's not something I would like, but by heavens that is awesome! Very shiny which is incredible as most "black" or dark resins are kind of matte looking I think.

Got to see Gwyn's little face and those awesome eyes. Those eyes, with butane blue panties... XD

    20. I think that was Odette's face used as a sample for the eyes (?? could be wrong)

I love the black resin too. I'd be curious as to how to paint the doll to make it all show up as naturally as possible. I know usually black dolls are painted with white paint...
