Volks DearSD 43cm Discussion Part 2

Jul 28, 2017

    1. If all the little girls who go the the Frozen sing-alongs at my local theater only knew!
I suspect they'll be cute, because how could they not be? But we've got the full complement of DearSDs in the house now, so I'm only after clothes and temptation.

    2. When I found out about the DearSD Elsa and Anna, I was as little worried as they might end up being gateway dolls for any Disney Princess/character to being made into a DearSD. If so, count me in and take all my money.:chomp::sweat:abow: I mean, no...I need to see if I might win the Holiday Event Lottery. If I don't win that lottery, then yes, take my money. Unless it's another lottery...

      *sighs*

Either way, I'll be disappointed or broke. Hahaha.:sweat Oh, for the love of Volks...:kitty2

    4. I have just started seriously looking into this size and I have a few questions. First, thank you in advance for answering my questions. I think these little girls are so adorable and I think that is why I am so attracted to them. Now, onto the questions!

      1. What is your favorite thing about this size?
      2. What is your least favorite thing about this size?
      3. Would you recommend this size to someone who likes to knit and sew for their dolls?
      4. How easy is it to find shoes for this size?
      5. How easy is it to find wigs for this size?
      6. How easy is this size to travel with? Can you carry them around for a long time without them feeling like they are getting far too heavy?

From my understanding, Dear SD is comparable to SD sizing, but they are short like minis. Am I right in thinking that way? I haven't gotten out my ruler to measure against my Dollfie Dream to try to visualize proportions yet. While I love her, I have been looking at smaller dolls, but I still want them to have more of a presence like the SD size has and not just fancy American Girl sized doll. The Frozen collab has really caught my eye and then I got even more excited when I realized the Four Sisters can also be in this size and that is my absolute resin grail sculpt.

Yes, these dolls are awesome and such a fun size! I will try to answer some of your questions from my personal perspective :)
      1. The proportions! I find the big head and the childlike body so cute. And like you mentioned, they really have a lot of presence (while still being a very manageable size). I also love the sturdiness and weight.
      2. There are, as of yet, not that many clothing and shoes options for DearSD from Volks or other makers. While they can wear some SD size clothes, the sleeves will often be too long and the same goes for hems on skirts.
      3. Yes! The size allows for a lot of detail, and they are very sturdy and easy to pose so I imagine trying on your creations would be quite easy.
      4. This is one of my few complaints about this size — there are almost no shoes made for them. The feet measure 6 cm in length, so smaller than SD feet but still too big to fit into MSD shoes. However, they can wear a lot of SD size shoes if they wear socks underneath. Volks has listed a bunch of shoes as being compatible with DearSD, so I think those would be a good bet.
      5. As easy as for SD size — they do share the same heads after all. I only have experience with Four Sisters sculpts (Kira and Una) , but they wear 9-10 inch wigs just like their bigger counterparts.
      6. I have yet to travel with my girl, but I have ordered an MSD size carrier for her that I am eager to try out! DearSD are a lot shorter than SD, so I imagine it would be at least a bit easier to carry them around, though they are of course not as light as MSD or Dollfie Dream.

Good luck, and if you do get a DearSD it would be lovely to see pictures!

    6. We've got four DearSDs in the house now, and all of them started out as larger dolls (Lieselotte, Ushiwakamaru, Yu Morisawa, Young Cecile).
Most of their SD clothing still fits them but some sleeves and bodices are a little long or baggy. Most of the shoes we have been using for them came from either Volks or rRabit and fit well with socks or stockings.

I love their heft and stability and they are much lighter to carry around than all of our 65-70cm dolls, so back when there were actual meet ups we'd often take them because they were lighter and more compact. My only wish is for other hands, but I know this line is kept intentionally simple and easy. The engineering is fantastic.

DearSDs are sort of the munchkin cats of the hobby - stumpy but as much of a cuddly armful as a regular cat. :XD:

    7. Thank you for taking the time for answering me @rakelnaomi and @St. James! I especially love the comparison to munchkin cats. Short, stubby, but still a lovely armful. I think now is the time to sit back and wait for the Frozen announcement to see if I want to try for Elsa or try to hunt down a Four Sisters. I think I will end up liking this size in resin and I've just fallen more in love at looking at them over the past week.

    8. Just welcome the little F48 home. I really want an F60 as well. :whee:

    9. Here are my responses. I hope they are helpful^^

      1. I love the cuteness. They are chubby and very endearing. Plus, they offer an alternative look for the SD heads. One could put a SD head on a Dear SD body one week and then a SD head on a SD body the next week. And the body? It is so solid. I love how the body inspires confidence in a way due to the weight of it in my hands.
      2. I am a bit apprehensive about the hands being attached with strings versus S-hooks but this is not a big issue.
      3. Definitely! Because some SD clothing can be a bit awkward on them, it is a great opportunity to really create for them.
      4. They fit Volks SD shoes very well but I tend to favour the old bulky platform shoes by Volks to the newer and narrower SD shoes by Volks. I am sure other companies offer great wider SD shoe options as well. The one thing I would be wary of is trying to use the same shoes on SD and Dear SD dolls because the Dear SD feet may stretch out shoes that are narrower.
      5. They fit the same SD wigs as the SD heads with SD bodies, so it is super easy to find wigs.
      6. I really like traveling with this size because they are shorter and fit in a MSD/SDM carry bag. They are a bit heavy, but I feel like the heft offers a sense of security rather than an inconvenience due to their more compact size. Compared to my MDD, though, they are very heavy.

Overall, I perceive Dear SD as giant YoSD and "chibi" variations of the SD dolls. With the F01/four sisters, for instance, you could have a SD version and a Dear SD version and they would feel like completely different dolls. I hope your F01/four sister girl comes home to you someday:aheartbea

    10. @MegWesley I've answered all your questions, if you need any additional photos of the body or of the posing abilities, please let me know. I'll be happy to help :3nodding:

      1. What is your favorite thing about this size?
I love that you get the presence of an SD-sized doll while the doll itself doesn't take up that much space. And having the SD-sized head on the smaller DearSD body looks so cute!
      2. What is your least favorite thing about this size?
Mhh... unfortunately there are no different hand options for this body type which limits the expressiveness of the doll.
      3. Would you recommend this size to someone who likes to knit and sew for their dolls?
Yes, absolutely! Because of the height and length of the extremities, you will need less fabric to create an outfit and because the doll is a bit chubby it's still no hassle to sew sleeves or add some small details to the outfit.
      4. How easy is it to find shoes for this size?
So far Volks hasn't released any shoes specifically made for their chubby feet (apart from their default shoes from the fullset) but you're still safe to buy normal SD-sized shoes - just make sure that they are not high-heeled shoes and that they aren't too snug.
      5. How easy is it to find wigs for this size?
Very easy! The DearSD body uses regular SD heads so (depending on the maker) 8-9 or 9-10 wigs will fit. My DearSD Coco wears a 9-10 wig.
      6. How easy is this size to travel with? Can you carry them around for a long time without them feeling like they are getting far too heavy?
This size is easy to travel with, they fit in most handbags and suitcases. They are a little bit on the heavy side for an MSD-sized doll but still a lot lighter than any SD.

And here is a photo of my DearSD Coco, she's been my favorite doll in my collection since the day she arrived (almost 2 years ago!) <3

    11. @MegWesley
I hope that you are able to get your DearSD F-01 someday, they are super adorable in any form but DearSDs have extra cuteness

      1. What is your favorite thing about this size?
They have the presence of an SD and the portability of an MSD. They are also the perfect size to be the younger sibling of SD dolls.
      2. What is your least favorite thing about this size?
Finding clothes for them is a nightmare. While VOLKS claims that they fit into SD clothes but from my experience almost everything is long/baggy or
otherwise ill-fitting and thus of no help. They do fit some stretchy MSD clothes relatively well but are thicker and thus much of that will not fit either.
      3. Would you recommend this size to someone who likes to knit and sew for their dolls?
Yes. I imagine that it would be a bit easier to knit/sew for than MSD dolls as the pieces would be larger but not quite as large as SD dolls so they would use
      less fabric.
      4. How easy is it to find shoes for this size?
I have found that all the SD shoes I have fit without issue with the exception of one heeled pair.
      5. How easy is it to find wigs for this size?
The heads are the same as SD so wigs are no different than for SDs.
      6. How easy is this size to travel with? Can you carry them around for a long time without them feeling like they are getting far too heavy?
They are easier to travel with than SDs due to being able to fit into smaller bags but I have found that when carrying them in my arms that they weight about
      as much as SDs.

and I'm just going to drop this here

    12. Here is my little trio of Dear SD. Well, I have a floating head as well since I am pondering how many dolls I actually have the energy for in terms of maintenance. I really love having three Dear SD but there is a possibility of it expanding to four, I suppose.

Here are Amilee (DSD Vanessa, default), Adelheid (Victorique on DSD body) and Avalynn (Luna on DSD body):

    13. I very recently welcomed a DearSD into my home! I'm really enjoying this size so far. I hope that this week I can have some time to do a bit of wardrobe-exploration to see what other clothes from my collection she can wear. ♥

@Chibi_Rat, I love those bunny ears!

@elphsnt, they make such an adorable little rainbow!

@MilkyTea, congratulations! The sparkly tree makes a lovely backdrop for her.

I enjoy to see everyone's DSD around here, and hope that I can get a Megu soon. Recently I got her in YoSD size, and now I need her in other sizes because she is too beautiful.
