Volks Dollfie Dream Mini discussion part 1

Apr 4, 2007

    1. Just received word that Maria arrived safely (after a few setbacks) to my house! Can't wait to see her, she and Sakutaro are so cute.

I'm also going to make a new custom MDD, since I don't have very many of them in comparison to my DDs! I have supplies for her, but have yet to get a body. Not sure if I'm going to do that while I'm still in Japan or just order off of Volks USA....in any case, I hope the joints have improved.

    2. I'd wait until the Dollfie Dream Sister dolls start arriving in February. DDS might be a much better doll experience than MDD. There are enough people on Figure.FM, for one place, who are expecting Touhou dolls. All should be made clear when they begin arriving.

    3. What are the DD "sister" dolls? Is this a new size that's coming out?

    4. Yeah, it's a 50cm tall size so it's sort of halfway between MDD and DD. Volks have only released a couple of unhelpful promo photos so far, but hopefully there will be a lot of pics once the Touhou girls ship since they're both on DDS bodies!

    5. Thanks skwerlie. Can't wait to see them.

    6. Does anyone know whether you can fit a Dollfie Dream head on an obitsu body of 60cm?

    7. but there is easy to find?

    8. you have found by volks japan?

    9. Anybody know how to fix a broken elbow on an MDD? The piece that holds the lower arm to the upper arm is broke on my Rika (probably from me having to pull her arm off to change her clothes), and the only way I can keep it from falling off is to keep her arm bent so that her hand is up by her face.

    10. Got any pictures of the break?

    11. Hey, guys, I found this sweetie while digging through doll blogs and I'm pretty sure she's a Dollfie Dream but I can't tell what her sculpt is! I thought it might be the new option head but the smile seems much wider and the eyes are smaller. She's just so cute and I'm just curious if anyone knew what sculpt she was just in case I ever get enough money for a Volks. xD

http://galaxypolice.blogspot.com/ This is the blog, btw. There are so many nice dolls here!

    12. It's a custom/modded head. I think, all dolls from Galaxypolice are modded.
This cute one is probably a modded DDH-01 option head, it's a good base for custom and cute chibi faces :)

Edit. Or maybe the base was one of MDD heads.
BTW, she has the Obitsu 50 body - http://galaxypolice.blogspot.com/2010/08/blog-post_17.html

    13. Oooh, that is a fantastic mod. <3 I can't even tell it's the same mold unless I look really closely. I'd love a doll that looked like that one, is it jerky to want to copy a doll? xD She's just so cute! Of course, I have no idea how to mod a doll so I'd be kind of lost in that regard. p: Thanks for letting me know!

    14. I'm in the process of fixing up a broken 'project doll' MDD that I bought from a member here. She has a break in the joint on her leg that lets it swivel (her previous owner thought it was a break in the knee, but after we pulled her completely apart, it actually seems to be farther up the leg) and the piece that holds her head to her body is gone.

The neck was easy enough, we just bought a new one from Cool Cat. Should be here in two weeks. I'll let you know what happens with the leg swivel. At this point, we're hoping a comparable Obitsu part exists to swap in, but I have to get her over to my Obitsu-goddess friends to have a look at her.

Otherwise she gets a knee brace and it becomes part of her character, ha ha.

Yumeko-chan: this may sound REALLY dumb, but are you sure you actually get the peg from her lower arm back into the hole from her upper arm? I've done that a few times myself, where I thought I had it and I didn't. Spent part of a con looking for her arm in a panic because of it.

I'll let you know what we we end up doing to my broken girl's leg, though, maybe it will help you.

    15. What exact part do you need? I've got some spare MDD internal parts left over from a mod.

    16. Off-site links to avoid breaking any rules about number of photos in a thread.

The swivel in her upper leg that lets her leg move side to side is what I BELIEVE is broken. As I said, her previous owner thought it was the knee, but far as I can tell the knee works great. I didn't actually dismantle the knee (or haven't done so yet), because if fixing this fixes her, why bother tearing apart something that works?

Here's a picture of the movement that joint controls on her UNDAMAGED leg.

Here's a bunch of pictures of the damage. It looks like a piece was either chewed or melted off, because it's dipped on the top with random pieces of plastic sticking out, not flat like all of her similar pieces. The leg with the damage always seems 'shorter' than the undamaged leg; if I put a few quarters under the damaged foot, she stands flat.
Also, the hole that the peg goes into 'splits' apart when you insert the peg. SO FAR as I can tell, this is the only joint that does this, but I think a little super-glue would fix this. Unless you think it's SUPPOSED to split to let the peg in and out??

Here's another picture of the damaged piece, with the damaged part circled.

Suggestions for repairs would be appreciated if you have them. If K-2 doesn't have a part, I'll be going to the Obitsu modders next.

    17. I got yer part right here...

But first, a picture and a couple of questions. Forgive me if I go over ground you're already familiar with. I'm just going by what I can see from your pictures so far.

First, the skeletal parts of MDD legs (and DD2 legs) are the same on both left and right legs. The only difference is that the Hip/Leg Joint Assembly is rotated 180 degrees.

Next, the split you're seeing in the Hip/Leg Joint Assembly is the two halves that the two screws are holding together, so that's supposed to be there.

Next comes what I've labeled as the collar. This "locking collar" serves as a clamp, which applies pressure on the two halves of the Hip/Leg Joint Assembly, keeping them tight.

      In your Photo bucket picture
      http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v345/DeadLegato/damage_doll/009copy.jpg
The collar is not shown in the correct position, if that's where you found it. It should be on the bottom of the Hip/Leg Joint Assembly. If it was in the position shown, the whole lower leg would be loose and prone to falling out. So take the collar off of the upper femur and place it on the Hip/Leg Joint Assembly as shown in the assembled leg in my picture. This is where it should stay. It should be a snug fit.

Back to your picture and the "short leg" issue.
Looking at the end of the peg (upper femur), mine also looks melted or chewed, not the clean square end you might expect. I think that is normal. All the ones I have appear to be like that. Also the groove on the side of your upper femur is closed on the end, leading me to believe it is the right length, having not been shortened by modding. With that leg appearing to be short compared to the other leg, I'm wondering if one of the "pegs" on the other leg are not seated completely, making that leg long. Check to see that all four pegs (upper leg and lower leg, left and right) are seated completely/the same.

Let me know the results and we'll continue from there.

    18. Oh! I am showing her EXACTLY as she was assembled the first time I took her apart. I'll put her back together the way you suggest and see if that fixes the problem. I'll also dismantle the other leg and check that nothing wacky is going on in there that would make the other leg 'too long.'

I went into the project assuming she HAD to be busted because that's what her previous owner had said, but maybe she's just put together wrong. Wouldn't that be too easy though?! Cross my fingers and hope!

I probably can't get to it right away, but I'll post more pics over the weekend, thanks!

    19. I return!! After assembling her the CORRECT way, one leg is still 'longer' than the other, unfortunately. However, since I got her back together right, I can fiddle with her legs enough to make her stand. And that's better than she was! So, for the time being, I'm going to leave her alone and see how I feel about her. If having to fiddle with her to make her stand bothers me enough, I'll start pulling her internals apart to figure out what's up with her legs. But for now, I think it'll be a quirk of her character.

    20. Well that's a step in the right direction! The short leg is a puzzlement. I can understand not wanting to disassemble and reassemble your doll. It can be kind of a pain. You might be able to correct the short leg issue a little in her posing. Pull the "short" leg down to the ground, letting the two hip joints swivel a little to compensate for the different lengths, then bend the spine/waist to "straighten" her torso up.
