:: Volks Dollfie Dreams Discussion Room : Part XVI :

May 30, 2022

    1. Hello! This is my first time in this thread - I won an Anthy in the Volks USA Lottery last month. I am excited but also nervous - I've never owned a vinyl doll this size and I am so used to resin, I'm not sure what to do. I'm also a little panicky because I feel like I need to get Utena but her second hand prices are currently very intimidating.

    2. Congratulations! I'm on the opposite end of the spectrum! All of my dolls are vinyl except for my SD13. I don't know how to restring her, or do to much. The vinyl DDs are very easy to work with. They pose well, they are soft, and when they're new they have nice vinyl smell. I don't think you'll have any problems at all; they're much easier than resin.

I will say that I do also own one Smartdoll and those can be a bit tricky because you have to take their arms off to put their clothes on. That's because D. Choo likes the clothes to be form fitting. Volks, on the other hand, tends to use hooks or snaps in the back of the clothes, so it should be easy to dress your DDs without taking any parts off, other than perhaps her hands.

Second hand prices on popular characters always go through the roof. I feel your pain!

    3. @Dollfie_Dude Thank you for the reassurances! I am excited! I own quite a lot of Volks outfits so I am eager to have her wear more than just her rose bride dress. However, they don't have the body sock? - the protection suit - in her skin tone so I am also anxious about staining. I don't have to worry about staining with resin.

I am worried if I wait too long, the price will just get higher. But on the other hand, if Anthy and I don't gel, then there would be no point in owning Utena too. I'm not sure which action is the best action to take haha!

    4. The tan bodysock has a noticeable color difference from tawny. It'd work if it wasn't visible but at that point any of them would.

I will say I had Anthy in her full default for a solid month or so without a hint of staining, even from her wig, so at least that much seems to be safe(ish)? Her hand was even touching the outside of the skirt and nothing. She's still wearing the wig since I'm struggling to find a replacement in a shade I'm happy with, so fingers crossed nothing suddenly changes :sweat

    5. @Tolgy Yeah I looked at the tan suit and it doesn't match her skin tone close enough. I even emailed Volks USA about it and they could only say "nope but uh use the tan I guess??? Maybe one day they'll make one???"

@asuu Thank you for reassuring me on the staining! I have a purple wig from Monique (from their going out of business sale) that I am eager to try on her. I think it's a lighter shade of purple but reminds me of her movie hair.
Is it bad that I want Volks to make their movie costumes? I loved how Utena and Anthy looked in the movie! But I also just want them to have more of their anime clothes hahaha.
Would you recommend changing her eyes or leave them in? I'm used to changing out default eyes but Anthy is literally going to be my first anime doll and DD.

    6. Seconded on the movie outfits... I also would've like Anthy's school uniform, or her end episode outfit (though I suppose that's a "spoiler"?) The rose bride outfit is amazingly well done though.

I haven't switched out her eyes yet, mostly laziness– they're glued in just like in resins. I don't think her defaults are too bad, they have a nice metallic sheen to them, but I personally would like to swap them for something a little more to my tastes... eventually. The wig is a bigger priority for me, mostly since I'd like to have her hair down in some of the outfits I've gotten.

    7. @asuu I love her series finale outfit too! She looked so pretty! I like how the rose bride outfit looks from pictures.

I see I see. I am so used to Oscar Doll/Swan Doll resin eyes so I am just a little anxious - I really want to like her since Utena is one of my favorite animes! (To the point that I went from drawing like CLAMP to drawing like Utena style and I am not sure I ever shook that habit haha)

    8. Anyone else super stoked about Kaito?! I know next to nothing about vocaloids besides the names of the ones Volks has already made but man I love him! He's really cute! I hope hes an open preorder, I don't know if I'll be able to buy so I hope that if I can't end up affording him that I can at least get his head and outfit

    9. I'm personally disappointed. As a Kaito fan I feel like he doesn't really look like him. Face to round and eyes to big. Makes him look younger.

    10. I’m so excited, he looks better than I ever expected. Kaito doesn’t really have a set appearance and I always preferred him to look cute, so I think they did an amazing job of making him look both cute and a little more mature than the rest.
I also find his sideways glance really charming as I don’t think any DD has come like that before, as opposed to looking straight ahead.
I feel like I’ve been waiting forever to see him so I’m glad it was worth the wait. I actually originally got interested in big anime dolls back in 2015 because I wanted to make a custom Kaito so the whole release is kinda special for me.

    11. I'm not familiar with vocaloid so I have no thoughts and opinions about Kaito as the character and whether Volks did a good job or not but as a doll I don't feel crazy for him because the face seems pretty generic for me....

I don't think Volks are good at making male DDs. They would do amazing if they make DDP and MDD boys though. For DD boys I think they still need more improvement... which is weird because they make amazing resin boy dolls with unique faces and beautiful male bodies. If they could make a DD version of the SD17 body I would die of happiness!

    12. He is amazingly cute. I was worried he'd look *too* young (ended up having this problem with Meiko, I thought I could accept it but just couldn't and will be reshelling mine with another more mature head like DDH07 or Sheryl) but no, he just looks adorable and bishie (indulging in an 00s throwback word , seems appropriate for Vocaloid fandom lol).

Consider the very small number of male DDs so far -- even if you include the 'intended as male' Dream Choice entry/ies it is single digits. So I think if they haven't yet hit an appealing aesthetic of vinyl boy, it's an artefact of this small sample size. Or to put it another way, years and years ago at the point when Volks had released less than ten resin boys there was a very limited aesthetic range to them -- I think there are many people who love Maximilian and Regulus today who would not be especially interested in owning the guys from those early days, for example.

Now, the vanishingly small number of boys it itself an issue and a crying shame! C'mon Volks, more more more! I just mean to say it's a slightly different issue than whether they're good at it.

    13. It's not like they are new to DD boys but you have a point. I hope they experiment more because so far the boys look softer than the girls. It's not about the quantity because another vinyl doll company only made one body and I think it is the perfect body I'm looking for, it's like a SD17 but in vinyl and the faces are different and nice.

      *coughs*SmDs*coughs*
Too bad Danny said he doesn't like boy dolls so they don't go on sale often, he just made them because buyers asked him to so he doesn't put that much interest in them but still, I think he makes the best vinyl boys so far.

I do love the custom DD boys though. I have seen so many nice custom DD boys in IG, maybe this Kaito will look great as a custom boy. Can't wait to see how people will customize him (the ones who won't keep the character )

    14. @Tolgy I think Megumin is beautiful! I don’t know the character, but I really like her dark hair and red eyes. Her outfit is nice too.

I won’t be entering for her so good luck to everyone entering the lottery! I will be looking forward to pictures!

    15. I’m still on the fence, but thinking about entering for Megumin.

    16. My Anthy arrived today! Her Rose Bride outfit won the battle against my fingernails (2 broke) so she is currently in another outfit. I am honestly far too scared to actually pierce her ears so those might never get used.

Any advice on if I should buy her a stand or if I can get her to stand on her own? She is very pretty but I am definitely not used to the Dollfie Dream body.

    17. While DDs can stand on their own, they're also very light/easy to get rattle on a shelf and I wouldn't leave one to stand 100% unassisted for more than photos. They're fine sitting, though- I only have one stand at the moment so a lot of sitting happens over here. As long as the frame is tight, which Anthy should be out of the box, they'll pretty much hold whatever position you put them in.

    18. Just sharing a quick shot of my Yuki.
