Volks pureskin SD, SD13 leg break

Jan 12, 2006

    1. Only a handful of people have actually reported problems. Compare the number of problems to the number of SD10's owned on the board and you can see the breaks are not common. Don't let vivid examples get in the way of facts here :sweat

    2. Oh~ but letting vivid examples get in the way of facts is one of my favorite things! *cough* <_<; I kid.

      Yes, you're right. I was just over reacting somewhat. e_e; I still like Kun, so I'll just have to cross that bridge if I should ever come across it. Though I hope not. My father would be upset to say the least. xD;

    3. I'll just add that I have two SD10 boys with the normal length legs and I haven't had any problems with either of them. Just be sure to watch out for the notches on the knee joints, but even then it's not a big deal.

    4. Unfortunately, it common enough to dissuade me, and I'm sure quite a few other potential buyers, away from the pureskin SD10 molds and bodies. Out of all my pre-doll friends who own dolls, two have had the pureskin SD10 new knees dolls. Both of them had the knee break in the exact same place, and neither girl was rough with her doll, attempted to sit them suwarikko or had them sanded. (These are friends who will drop off dolls for sleepovers or for me to watch for a week while they're away and vice versa. I've done all of their restringing and any aesthetic work they've needed, so I'm more than familiar with their bodies and construction.)

As I've said before, no one wants to buy a multi hundred dollar doll with even the strong possiblity that it will break with normal play. This thread has more than enough evidence to convince me that it's not just a random freak accident, but a consistant and unfortunate defect in the SD10 knee mold. Some people happen to not have issues, but enough do have breaks to make me not comfortable paying the money for this body.

That all said, like any doll, do your homework and be aware of the problems associated with your choice before buying. If you like an SD10 doll, play gently, and be prepared to write that email to volks and to shell out for new legs parts. Even if you don't want to buy new legs, please email Volks anyway. They also need to see that this isn't just a freak accident happening to one or two dolls.

    5. Agreeing with this. Frankly, it happens WAY too often for it to be freak accidents all the time, or the fault of the owner. >:[

While I love the look and feel of the SD10 bodies, I'm afraid I can't recommend them. We're playing with a lot of money.

    6. You could always try getting a Kun head, and just buying a different body if you're really concerned about the leg issue.

    7. Thirded! Well said! ;3

Sorry I haven't posted in here in a long time, but I wanted to collectively thank all the people who have contributed to this thread. Thank you so so much for your help and input!

It's been over a year since my Megu's knee broke, and I'm still pretty passionate about it. I don't want to forget about it, so I've decided to keep her broken leg. Also, I'm thinking of putting together a video to put on Youtube to show the mechanics of the SD10 leg in motion. :)

Thank you guys again for the great help! :aheartbea

    8. Olla I've been rereading some of the posts and I was wondering can the 1 piece body might have influence on the tention at the knees?
Since SD13 are jointed bodies and the knee breakages is far less compared to SD knees breakages. Is there a possibilty that this a jointed body for SD knees might help?

I'm just wondering since I wanna do a FCS..but I want the sd legs...but this threads makes me wonder iff I should just choose SD13 body.

    9. its actually because on the SD10 body, the resin on the outer knee joint is dramatically thinner (on my replacement leg it was ALMOST see through!!..until I reinforced with with epoxy of course) and on the SD13 legs, the resin isn't as thin.
If you do go with the SD10 body (and I adore the body, even with its issues) I'd recommend sanding down the knee joints (thinning them) on the lower leg piece, and using some sort of epoxy on the inside knee section of the upper legs. It hasnt really effected my girls standing ability, and you can't see anything different (regardless of clothing and position)
If you are alright with mods and possible repairs, I'd recommend the SD10 body, but if not, go with the SD13. And regardless, you could probably sell the original body later and get the suwarrico (sp?) one if you're really concerned about joint problems.

    10. :o ..... :( i'm sorry that this has happened to a lot of you.. and that this isn't a secluded incient. :horror:

i was thinking of possibly getting one in the far future.. so my couple could have a kid of thier own.. but this is news to me.. hopefully volks will correct this design flaw..

until then, contact volks and reinforce those joints somehow until better ones come out.

    11. If you're really worried, then there are other bodies you could put the heads on if you had to.

It is unfortunate. But, as was said, somewhere in the thread and I don't feel like finding the post, the SD10 suwarriko bodies haven't had the problem because of the way they're designed. It's a knee problem, not a torso problem for regular SD10 bodies.

I still like the mold of SD10, and there are things you can do to reduce the chance of it happening if you're interested.

I hope Volks fixes the body problem SOON.

    12. hmmm I geuss I'll have to go with the Sd13 body..this way I'll feel more assured. Thanks for the advice!

    13. Name: Annabelle
      Doll type: Pureskin SD10 Sara

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
      Yes I am.

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
Very carefully, even taking care on how I bent the knee.

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
      Sitting.

      4. What tension the stringing has
Medium, to mildy tight, I was hoping that a little tighter would keep the ball from popping out.

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
      Never.

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      Standard pureskin.

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
      05.05/RE

The break was also very sudden, it didn't crack before hand which freaks me out. I have no idea what happened.

    14. I am planning on getting another SD10 in the future, even though I had a leg break on me. The SD10 girl would be on a Swarriko body, which I absolutely adore! So my solution is that if you like the bodies, get a jointed torso SD10. The SD10 boy bodies are much harder to obtain, seeing as how they are limited to Ushiwakamaru and FCS dolls, but they are out there!

    15. Now, if only I could get those for boys.
-pretty much certain she's doomed to have her two SD boy bodies' legs break on her-

    16. It wouldn't kill Volks to just FIX IT. >.< We shouldn't have to be scrambling for alternative, limited and hard to get bodies to correct a mistake on their end. My $600 toy had better be a quality product right out of the box. :x

    17. My F28 boy was once facing the same question 2 years ago
any all purpose glue like UHU will do.
just let it dry for one or 2 days.

    18. Why would a jointed torso boy body be less likely to get broken knees than a standard boy? The legs are the exact same.

    19. since there have been no issues with them so far, I think that it has something to do with the pressure put upon the knee being less when attached to a jointed torso rather than a non-jointed torso. I understand that the knee is the problem, but IMO the torso is what is causing the problem. that might just be my crazy idea though- but it is true that swarriko bodies do not have this issue.

    20. But that's because the swarrico knees are constructed completely different. The jointed torso has nothing to do with it.
