Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. Volks pureskin SD, SD13 leg break

Jan 12, 2006

    1. Yes. It's because the resin on the sides of the knee isn't so thin, and there is more room on the back of the leg to bend the knee at a larger angle.

    2. So uhhh, I might be getting an SD13 pureskin boy body with the OLD knee type... any problems with that one? *paranoid*

    3. The only problem is it doesn't hold poses as well. SD13 boy knees, oldskin or Pureskin, rarely break. I have three and had four at one time, all at different stringing tensions, and there was never a problem with any of their knees.

    4. Well, it's mostly that the knee joint is flat so it doesn't cause the sides of the knee to bend outwards, but the thicker resin helps too of course.

    5. That's good to know ^^

    6. The knee itself is fine, (I have an old knees pureskin 10 girl who is 3 with not even a hairline crack!) but you might have to do some modding to elongate the thigh slots to help him sit up. It hasn't been warm enough here for me to cut into resin yet. I'll post a step by step in the customizers forum when I do it.

    7. well crap...seems I have joined the club:(
      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
I believe Im the second owner of the body
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
She is mostly carried and I try not to take her legs out of the sitting position if possible.I'm extremely careful of her legs..
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
      sitting on a couch
      4. What tension the stringing has
      pretty loose
      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
she always wears fairly fluffy dresses
      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      standard SD10 pureskin girl body
      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
no idea since my girl is a SwD Mimi head on a Nono body

So,am I right to assume I can get this replaced even if I am not the original owner?

    8. Anais II body - The thigh piece got a big crack and then broke off recently. :|

      1.
It's a second hand body. It didn't arrive with any damage.
      2. Doll Handling - I suppose I'm a bit rough with them. I don't treat them like how I'd hold a new born infant. I never thought of supporting the legs. I didn't think it was necessary.
      3. When I'm not playing with the body it is usually sitting in a doll sized chair.
      4. The string tension is medium to loose.
      5. I really don't think that restricting pants or boots is the problem in my case. I only have one pair of pants that is semi-tight that my girl infrequently wears.
      6. Standard body.

Also, out of all of the replacement legs out there... has anyone had a problem with those cracking/breaking?

I can't see the point of paying to replace my girl's leg for the exact same part that could potentially break again. Are the replacement parts re-designed? Is the resin different or stronger?

    9. It's the exact same leg.

My SD10 boy's knee broke with his original owner. She took him to the LA store, Mr. Yamada replaced the leg at the store and strung the body for her. I've had the body since January and he's sat in loose pants or a dress on a couch or my desk since then. Sometimes I'll sit him on my lap to watch Rozen Maiden  So far his knees are okay.

So I think as long as you are more cautious with the new leg, it should be fine. There will of course be exceptions to this, but in general Volks would not keep replacing doll parts if they did not expect you to be happy with that solution.

    10. ung time to bring more life into this thread...
my SD Magical Michael leg has broken...

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
      first and only owner
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
he is handled VERY carefuly...because i /didnt/ want his leg to break...
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
      laying down / storage position
      4. What tension the stringing has
      lighty tight
      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
      nope, loose clothes
      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited
      SD Magical Michael limited
      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.

    11. Just a little reminder...if you've experianced a knee break, make sure to email volks and let them know! The sooner they do something about it, the better. Just replacing legs shouldn't be a full time solution.

    12. Thank you ChriseeV for your input! I'm so sorry it happened to you :(

I do have good news though concerning this situation!! I went to the NYC Dolpa 2, and saw the doll Doctor about my Megu's broken knee. My two friends who also had broken knees on their dolls(one has a Sara, one has a Magical Micheal body) had seen him the previous day. The friend who has a Sara was told they would "get back to her about it". The friend with the Magical Micheal was told it was better to leave it broken. *_* (Leaving this part broken is NOT an option. Because there is nothing to hold the leg steady in the socket, the sharp break may slip and gouge into the kneecap, causing a large gash. It did it to my girl :( )

So when I went in to see the doll doctor, Kuni asked me how it happened, and I explained that I woke up in the morning, picked her up, and felt a crack in her knee. I don't know when it happened. He nodded knowingly as if he had seen it before. Then they told me that they would replace it for me and sand out the gouge in her kneecap. I thanked them profusely(very profusely). And then I politely reminded them of my two friends who did not recieve replacements. It took a bit of persuasive begging, but I did manage to get them to replace all three of our broken legs, for free!

They do bring some replacement parts with them. When they replaced the legs, they went into the storage room where they kept all their stuff and came out with the new legs. A few times they accidentally brought SD13 girl parts, so it led me to believe that they had brought a box of miscellanious replacement parts, just in case. Kuni kept asking me to understand that they might not have the parts, that they only brought a few of them when they took trips like this.

So if you have the opportunity to go to dolpa or bring your doll to see the doll doctor, PLEASE DO IT. Now they have three more broken legs that they can examine first hand, and also three more owner testimonials. But the more the better! Maybe when they see how many people are asking for free replacement parts, they will consider fixing this problem, since it is now hitting them where it hurts the most: Their wallets.

Big thanks to SapphireMusings for being so supportive this whole time! :)

    13. mabey it'll be a good idea to write to volks about that... thay should know about problems with their dolls.

    14. Ok, I guess I am a little confused. I noticed a few threads were people said they had problems with the new pureskin SD10 Volks knees breaking. Then I noticed a few people selling or posting dolls labeled new knees or old knees. Did Volks fix the problem on the SD10 knees and that is why people mention that they are the new knees instead of old? I am thinking of getting and SD10 four sisters doll and I wanted to get one from the US Volks, but if they still have knee problems I might get her a different body. Thanks!

    15. Hmm, I had read that thread, but I am still confused about the knees. When they say old knees do they mean the oldskin body then? I could have sworn I saw a new pureskin with "old knees" for sale, so that is what got me wondering this. I was hoping that new meant that they had improved them :( .

    16. Yes, there is such a thing as Pureskin old knees. When they say old knees, they mean pureskin old knees. But the knees with the breakage problem are the pureskin new knees ones, believe it or not... the newer knees break more than the old ones!! ;_;

EDIT: here's a thread all about the Pureskin new knees breakages problem. http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59863&highlight=knee

    17. Thank you for the info! I guess I am leaning towards a different body for now..

    18. It says that the SD10 suwarikko bodies are less prone to this, so you might try that.

(Now I'm really glad I lost the Anais 1 auction on Y!J and got a suwarikko body instead....)

    19. So far the knee-breaking problem is only with SD10 pureskin, normal-length legs' new knees. This means that all pureskin new knees SD13 boys and girls, SD10 suwarikko girls, and SD10 boys (with the notable exception of Michael cause he's a shortypants) have no problems, since they all have different legs. It's only the one type of leg, the kind that comes with SD10 girls. Oldskin bodies, and pureskin old knee bodies (the kind that look less natural) also have no problems. If you're looking into getting an SD10 four sisters, you may want to consider getting an SD13 body and SD10 four sisters head instead (FCS; the standard SD13 and SD10 four sisters heads are different, whereas you can just get whatever head you want with FCS), since this would fix the leg problem. The only size difference in SD13 and SD10 is the legs and arms, which effectively makes them a centimeter or so taller, and makes it so you don't have to worry about legs. :)
