Volks pureskin SD, SD13 leg break

Jan 12, 2006

    1. Yes that is good to hear! I wish you could get the swarrico body directly from the site>< and plan heads. ><:...(

    2. I am so sorry this happened to you too Doughnut-hole... could I ask you a big favor? I had started a thread a while back asking owners to answer some questions about their broken dolls, but it was merged with another SD10 leg breaking thread, and so the list of questions was kinda lost in the shuffle. I was trying to collect some information about the dolls that are breaking, here's the original post: http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showpost.php?p=907195&postcount=132

The favor that I want to ask you is this: Would you fill out these questions, so I can add you to the list? I would appreciate it so greatly!!

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
      4. What tension the stringing has
      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.

Even if you only have answers to a few of them, every little bit helps! Thank you so so much *hugs*

    3. I'll reply to this. I can see that this is an old post (plus Volks makes new leg parts) but why not anyway.

      Here's Marius (Pureskin SD Ryo).

Here is his "injury" (see the curved slash on the knee cap):(

      as for the questions...
      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner: Yup, I'm the original owner. I bought him from the November 2003 Doll Hobby preorder when the pureskin Ryo's first came out.

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)I definatly handled him with care. I never left him standing on his own while I was away for a second.

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with. Always Sitting

      4. What tension the stringing has. When I first got him the string was very tight. When I picked him up or tryed to pose him standing, his legs would always buckle back to sitting.

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed. No, all of his pants I made him were always baggy.

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)???

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out. On the inside of the head I see X3-2 whatever that means.

Going on.. In the second pic, that curved indintation on the thigh is were it broke. It may have happened when he was trying to stand on his own. This happened in late 2004. I did contact the Japanese Volks site and they offered to give me a new part for $50. I was broke at the time so I couldn't buy it.:...(
When I was a part of the doll group "Our silent friends" a nice lady named Karin (KRB site with Ajumapama) fixed the thigh with apoxie putty. It lasted a really long time until mid 2006 when it broke off again. I did try super glue but it still snapped off. I had visited the LA volks store but I really didn't want an old skin part, plus they looked to thick. But luckily I went to the NY Volks doll party 2 and the doctor fixed the leg for me (which is what you see now in the pics). I'll take care of that leg for as long as I can. When I visit the Volks in Japan...maybe they'll have some sympathy for me and replace it for free..or just change them out for the new leg parts.:eusa_pray

    4. So, to prevent my doll from having this problem, will sanding the outer side of the knee joint help? Do I need to do more?

      I'm worried about my girl...

    5. Hiya Baby, I can help with this! ;3

Yes, sanding the outer side of the ball joint will help, but I HIGHLY suggest strengthening the socket with epoxy as well.

Knowing how the problem happens is the first step. As long as you're careful to unlock the teeth before you bend her knees, she'll probably be fine. But to avoid any uncertainty, strengthening the socket and sanding the ball are very adviseable. :D

    6. after I got my replacement part, I did sand the ball part down quite a bit and I reinforced the insides of the socket with epoxy. after that, the problem just didnt happen anymore..honestly though I was scared to even restring that doll..one part of the outer leg joint was almost see through! (the replacement volks sent) so I know it wouldnt have survived without the slight mod.

*edit* I also sanded down the teeth so they unlocked more easily, just to reduce strain. She still stood perfectly until I sold her (lol) and as far as I know, the current owner hasnt had any problems

    7. Ack! Poor dollies with broken legs! :(

I'm confused though. I have heard that this problem is only with standard SD10 boys/girls -- not with SD13 girls or suwarikko bodies. Is that true? I don't really understand the cause of the problem though, is it the single piece torso causing the leg breakage or if it is the structure of the knee joint? 'Cause I'm pretty sure that standard SD13 girls and standard SD10 boys have the same legs (the longer type).

I just can't figure out if I should worry about my FCS girl having this problem. She has an SD10 torso and SD13 girl legs. >.<

    8. Your girl shouldn't have the problem. It's all in the legs. SD10 boys and SD13 girls don't have the problem, they both have the longer legs. It's only the shorter legs that break, and only on the normal-legged SD10 girls. The Suwarikko's legs are designed entirely differently, so hers don't break either.

    9. It should be mentioned that Magical Michael is the only SD boy with the shorter legs (the SD girl legs). Mark, Ryo, Michele, and other SD boys have the longer legs (same legs as SD-13 girls), so they don't have this leg issue as much.

Dolly, if your FCS girl has the SD-13 girl legs, I wouldn't worry about it :)

    10. Thanks so much for your replies, rykaan and nikittin! :daisy That is good (well, relatively!) to hear that it is the legs themselves that are the problem. The one piece torso is so beautiful! My FCS girl does indeed have the SD13 girl legs, so I will just take care with her as usual, but not worry too much. :)

*slaps forehead* And I had completely forgotten about Michael having short legs. XD

    11. Dolly, that's what I did with my girl too. She has the SD10 one piece torso, and I found a friend who wanted to swap her SD10 limbs for SD13 ones. The difference is amazing, and I actually love the doll a lot more as a result of the trade. It worked out perfectly, and any other SD10 girls I get will have SD13 girl limbs for sure. ^^

    12. I am about ready to order an SD10 because I do love her body and the proportions and her cost (vs SD13). So I am concerned about this issue. I think I have read this entire thread (but maybe not in order). Some of the pictures have been removed so I am just checking to be sure I understand the issue with the knee.

You are suggesting to do some preemptive work on the joint as seen in Gothic_hydran126 post above.

You are suggesting that there is there a proper way to work the joint? Do you stretch it to unlock the knee before bending it?

    13. i'd recommend reinforcing the joint once your girl arrives, and maybe sand down the teeth on the back of the knee so the joint moves more smoothly. Thats about the only advice I can give though.

    14. What I did was boil some water, take the leg with the problem (the left one. If you bend both of them you can feel the difference in tightness) and dipped it in there for a few seconds. Then I took the corresponding ball part, inserted it from the back of the socket and pulled down a little to open the socket up. This makes the joint a little loose and wobbly. I used hot glue to fill in the gap, but you can do a re-inforcement with epoxy or something.

    15. I definitely recommend reinforcing joints with epoxy. Its an inexpensive way to help prevent tears and loss of money.

    16. Thanks for your recommendations eleniel, I will take it to heart.

For whatever it's worth, I spoke to Volks USA last week regarding this issue (just thought I would see what they may say). I was told that they haven't had any recent complaints about this issue but that they did in the past. I asked if there was anything that I could do to help prevent it from happening to me and they just said that the leg is meant to only move forward and back and to just move it gently and I should not have any problems. I will definitely look my girl over when she comes.

Thanks for the heads up, and solutions for this problem

    17. I have three Volks girls - SD13 from 2004, SD swarrico from 2005, and SD from May 2007.

I play a lot with my dolls - not roughtly, to be certain, but not ultrasuper-carefully, either.

I have not had any problem whatsoever.

    18. wow! very helpful advice for prevention. I will be sure to try some of that out. :daisy

    19. Just for the record I have tried :

      2 part Epoxy - failed

      Super Glue- failed

      Gorrilla Glue- Failed

I have clamped it , set it , waited 24 hours etc The peice still breaks off.
She can still stand with out it but its the asthetic I am trying to fix.

The area is to thin to drill for a pin I should think. Still lookiing at ways to fix before I try to replace....

    20. ~.~ My Megu has had this happen.
Anyone know the procedure of getting new thigh? Can I just have someone to go the volks store for me to ask for a replacement? How can I prevent this from happening again.
