Volks pureskin SD, SD13 leg break

Jan 12, 2006

    1. Yep, absolutely. They will replace any broken parts, including non-standard parts. I replaced both a Kohya hand and an Isao hand for someone while I was there, both of which are non-standard. I've also seen LE heads on Y!JA that are new, still in package, where the seller states that the head is a replacement one they got from Volks. (I've seen this for Heath, Shirou, even MSD painting school Rock.) However, you must return the original, damaged part first -- they had to introduce this policy to stop people lying about breaking parts and then turning around and selling them for inflated prices.

And yes, as far as I'm aware, you can also replace old resin broken parts. Even though they don't sell dolls made of it anymore, there are still lots of owners who have old resin dolls, and who will occasionally have breakages! The list I have of replacement part costs has the cost for both old resin and pureskin. (Old resin parts are slightly cheaper, if you wondered. :) )

    2. Thanks Cassiel.^^

I've been lucky and nobody has been broken, but some of the dolls are 4+ years old.
Do they have replacement parts for the unoss? (She's my oldest doll, though I'm pretty careful with her.)

    3. I'm glad they do replace parts, but it's kinda useless for those of use who don't live anywhere near a sumika, and don't know anyone that does ;__;

Eleniel, Volks has said that they are not currently working on a new design...but if you follow Haibane's mod suggestion, I'm sure you can fix your girl's leg! Or if you can get someone to take the part back to LA like Cassiel said ^.^

    4. Ahh that's so comforting to know, Cassiel, thanks for posting it! I thought I would be sunk if anything ever happened to my two BW boys. And about the knees, has anyone thought about how rough handling might contribute to this..?

    5. yeah I'll take her leg to the LA store if I get a chance, but at this point it'd be cheaper to buy a new SD10 body off ebay or DOA than to go to LA. lol. I've been looking into buying her the swarriko (sp) body anyways, since I like how it looks and would like the added torso joint.

When my girl broke, she hadnt been handled rough. I'd been very VERY careful about bending her legs and arms before...I just picked her up and realized there was a piece of resin the size of a quarter in her sock...really freaked me out.

    6. Actually, if my theories are correct, there's actually a theoretical possibility that careful, slow knee bending could make it worse.
When I bent my dolls knees quickly (in the incorrect way per my little guide) they tended to snap back into place, but when you bend them slowly the incorrect way they remain longer in the position that most presses on the sides of the knees, and may even remain outside the socket entirely creating constant pressure on the sides.

Of course if you actually *forced* the knees to bend sideways that would put severe stress on the sides of the knees and may even cause them to snap right off, but that doesn't seem to be what is happening. Rather it's a case of slow creeping growing cracks.

BTW, I just saw this notice on volks japanese site about them discontinuing the return exchange of certain old parts (if I understood it correctly)
      http://www.volks.co.jp/jp/superdollfie/shitadori/index_shitadori.aspx
But it seems to be mostly oldskin heads, and possibly the old type pureskin knees... again, if I read it correctly.

    7. Hi everyone!

Lately more and more people have said that their SD10 pureskin non-jointed torso girls' bodies have experianced a break in the knee joint. However, cases have been reported of SD13, SD boy, and MSD leg breakages also. The number of cases have been growing, but Volks apparently isn't aware of how many people this has happened to. So far their response to people's emails to them about the break have been that they haven't heard of it happening before. They told me they thought it might be the tension of the elastic that's causing the problem. They have offered replacement parts to some owners.

I want to create a list of people(or at least a head count) who have had this happen to them.

Here are more threads on the subject, with many owner's testimonies, including mine, on the break:
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=59863
      http://www.denofangels.com/forums/showthread.php?t=41394

If you've had this happen to you, please post here with your name, and the doll model that it happened to. I have also seen one case of this happening to an SD10 boy body, and an MSD. Any information or input would be appreciated greatly!

I want to make this problem more well known, in order to increase people's awareness of the risk, teach people how to prevent it, and how to repair it. And maybe, if we get enough proof, we can show it to Volks so they know about it. The first step to fixing a problem is knowing about it right? I mean, I don't really expect them to change the mold of the leg lickidy-split, just like that, but I have faith that this information will certainly help them in the future. :)

Please answer as may of the questions on this list as possible:
      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
      4. What tension the stringing has
      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.

Also, if you know anyone whose doll has broken like this, please direct them to this thread.

Please help, every little bit counts! :daisy

    9. usagi, you're an angel!!! Thank you! :D Mind if I put that list in the first post?

    10. Sure, I think it'd be best if people could be as descriptive as possible if a petition has to be made :daisy

    11. I'm more then willing to help. I feel quite strongly on the situation, and anything I can do will most definatly be done!

Nope, my doll has had 2 previous owners.
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
Usually I pick her up by her waist and she sits with her knees bent in my arms. I've always been extremely carefull with her because I knew of the problem.
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
Lying down, or being propped up on pillows.
      4. What tension the stringing has

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
My doll no longer has the plate on the back of her head as it was lost by a previous owner, but I have seen a picture of it and I'm 95% certian it said 5/5 R.E.

    12. I heard of it happening to a SD13 girl too...

    13. Here's my info:

      my name: Bianca
Doll type: SD10 Megu, pureskin, non-jointed torso body

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner: No, I am her second owner. Her first owner sold her to me like new, none of her packages were opened.
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?) : I pick her up by her waist and try to keep her legs out of the locked position.
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with: laying down.
      4. What tension the stringing has: Loose
      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed: No.

Thank you SapphireMusings, and thanks araachan for that info!

    14. Prehaps you should open it to all Volks dolls? If there really have been SD13 cases like Araachan said, the more info the better! :daisy

    15. To contribute to SappireMusings (I was her doll's previous owner) info, I'll tell how I handeled her too ^_^

      My (nick)name: Arashi
      Doll type: Pureskin SD10 Nana
      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
Yes, I bought her directly from the company
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
When holding her, I picked her up by the waist and held her in the crook of my arm with her knees bent like she was sitting in a chair.
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
Sitting, like above but on a table.
      4. What tension the stringing has
Rather tight in the arms, not so much in the legs.
      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
      No, never
      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      Standard pureskin
      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
      I never payed attention *sweatdrop*

      Hope it helps!

    16. This happened to me too, to a body I bought originally in perfect condition from Marilyn on the board.

      Name: Terese
      Doll type: Pureskin SD10 Kun

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
No, it was originally bought by Marilyn and I purchased the body from her not long after she recieved it.

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
In general, reasonably careful. I didn't treat her as porcelain but I didn't fling her around either. I usually picked her up either by the waist or (eh heh) the neck, and supported her by her bottom.

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
In a sitting position on the ledge of my desk, but once in a while (though VERY rarely) I left her standing in a doll stand.

      4. What tension the stringing has
      Medium.

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
      Never.

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      Standard pureskin.

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
The head was separated from the body, and has since been sold to other owners, so I couldn't find out what the head plate said. However, the body was originally shipped from Volks around October 25, 2005, and I purchased her from Marilyn about a month later. The problem didn't become apparent for at least another month until I noticed a crack... not long after i noticed, it quickly became worse and eventually broke. The same thing happened to the other leg, so now both knees are broken.

      Hope that helps :sweat

    17. My poor Isabeau is on her second set of legs because of this problem...I even took her to the LA store to buy new parts but they did not carry replacement legs and would NOT order the part...I had to scavenge a pair from a member who just happened to be parting out a doll in the right skin color...what LUCK!

I still have the thigh (actually the full set of legs), which broke at the outside of the knee joint. So, if anyone needs to see it, I can take pics.

I have NO idea when it happened, just noticed one day last summer, that she did not stand as stable as she once did.... and when I took off her jeans, I nearly cried...and could NOT find the piece....poor little gimp girl.

      anyway...to answer the survey:

      SD13 Yori

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
.......I am the origianl owner...ordered her from the Japanese site...Jan 05

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
.......I play pretty hard...Izzy climbs rocks, rides horses and models.

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
.....she has a lovely couch she shares with her man...so seated

      4. What tension the stringing has
.......She was strung perfectly because I'd had her restrung at IFDC Vegas just one month before I discovered her injury.

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
....She does not wear boots but tennies...though she almost always wears jeans but not tight ones.

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      ....Isabeau is an SD13 Yori

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
.......there is a 32 inside her head etched into the resin

    18. Type: Magical Michael, recieved 10-1-05 new from Volks, sueded, never been restrung.

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
first owner-had him for 8 months

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
picked up my the torso, held either across his md-section or sitting on my arm. I play kinda rough with him, he is taken lots of places and put into lots of bags and has had to contort to fit in some.

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
sitting, with his legs slightly bent.

      4. What tension the stringing has
medium, possibly a little bit tight.

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
always wears loose pants or booty-shorts or loose dresses

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited
      Limited Magical Michael

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
0508HDP on headplate, 8 inside his head

    19. Also have to contribute to the SD leg issue.

      Type: PureSkin SD10 Nono
      Left Leg, Outside Joint.

      1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
Pretty sure, got her off ebay and she looked never played with/New in the box.

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
Around the torso or one hand on the torso, other lifting the legs too.

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
I think at that time it was more standing than anything. Laying in her box when she wasn't.

      4. What tension the stringing has
      Wasn't restrung yet. Original/Normal

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
When she broke her leg she was wearing pants and boots but she was out and taking many pictures.

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
Pureskin SD10, which has probably the highest number of reported leg incidents. When the "doctor"/boyfriend was checking her out, he said it was bound to happen because at the crack, the leg was made slimmer and more delicate than the right leg.

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
      Inside: 3 and 2002
      HeadCap: 05.04/RE
