Yeah, I ordered her off the international volks site in October 2005

      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
I have always been really careful with her. When I pick her up, I usually support her legs, head, and arms (she's too heavy for me to just toss around)

      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
Standing on a stand, or lying in her box

      4. What tension the stringing has
default tension..not too tight or too loose

      5. If the doll is/has worn restricting pants or boots that could have contributed
She wore tights, but they were really stretchy and a bit loose

      6. If it's a standard, FCS, or limited (like the SD13 FCS boy's woowoo being crooked, this might be something that only happens with a certain type of doll for some reason)
      She's a new makeup pureskin SD10 megu...very standard

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
The number inside the headcap is 4. the one on the plate is: 05.06/RE

    2. 1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
      Yeah, I'm the original owner.
      2. How they typically handle the doll (pick it up and support its legs or not?)
I'm...insanely careful with her. x.x We've had rough times, but really, who hasn't?
      3. What pose is the doll normally in while not being played with
She's usually laying down in her makeshift bed I made for her.
      4. What tension the stringing has
      Its actually pretty loose since shes over 2 years old. I've been meaning to get new elastic. x.x;

      She's a volks SD10 pureskin Sara.
      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
      ... I can't find a number on the inside of her head. o_o;;;

    3. 1. Whether or not they're the doll's original owner
No, I bought the body for the Anais head I had.

      Shiratori body, the old knees.

      7. Tell the number on the inside of the head so people can get an idea of when the doll was made and maybe pinpoint a certain bad batch that came out.
Unknown, I bought the body for a head I had. I'd had the body for 1-2 years before the break, so it wasn't the old owner that did it.

We just want the chance to buy replacement legs... we understand breaks happen! But, we also need a way to get them fixed.

    4. Bump! I know there are more people then this XD If you have another doll thats not an SD10, post too!

    5. i had the same problem with mine as well but i sold the body later. but still it happened to me so you can count me in for a head count.

    6. Hi folks,

      Great news!!

Just got back from Volks in Torrance and I was able to get a replacement thigh for my Magical Michael. Photos of his damage here and here (please ignore the "for sale purposes" :P).

I explained to the manager that I purchased Michael at the store opening last November and since discovered the damage on his left leg. He charged me $39 for the replacement part. He kindly installed the new thigh also ^^

I asked him what others should do that have experienced this sort of cracking/fracture on their dolls. He advised me to tell you to email VolksUSA and explain your situation. What they will probably ask you to do is mail the broken part to them (if you cannot come in person) and they will arrange to get a replacement part for you. This is how I understood it anyway :sweat

Good luck to you all ~ there is hope!!

    7. I sent an email to their address explaining the issue. Lets see what happens...

      **EDIT**

after sending in pictures of the broken part, volks agreed to replace the broken leg piece for about $39 plus shipping after I send them the part I have. :)

    8. I'm going through this process with Volks right now on possibly 3 legs. Considering getting new legs for the Kun body I bought from dirtywings that has repaired knees and definitely getting a new leg for the SD-13 Yori body with a broken right knee.

      Wish me luck :)

    9. my sd10 tenshi chipped off quite a piece on the right knee the same night i got her. i wasn't even rough. she didn't even fell down. i was just letting her sit down.
i had other dolls for ages (esp. domuya bodies they all fell down sometime or other but they don't even get scratches let alone happen this chipping thingy) sign... it kinna turns me off from believing that Volks are quality conrtolled.

    10. has anyone ever linked Volks to this thread?

    11. Volks has been made aware that people have this problem, as Nikittin posted a few posts above yours. The fact that thousands of people worldwide own Volks dolls and have for years should show that Volks does care about quality, otherwise we wouldn't keep buying more. The few broken leg reports vs. the amount of non-broken SD10s is more than enough evidence that leg breaks aren't commonplace and are not a reason to start a mutiny against Volks.

BTW, if she broke the night you got her you could have easily had her leg replaced for free, did you do this?

    12. Did anyone take their broken doll or leg to the recent New York or LA Tea parties?

They both had doll doctors there. The doll doctors were either Volks doll engineers or sculptors.

I think Volks would want to examine the dolls or part in person..or at least see good detailed pictures.

    13. Wow, so there are a couple of SD13 leg problems too? Though most of the dolls that seem to have this problem are regular SD so I'm not really worried about my SD13 at the moment. I really hope Volks considers some new design for the knees...this makes me kind of reluctant to buy an SD boy body for the doll I'm planning on putting together in the future. At least they are aware that this is a major issue.

    14. I received my new leg from Volks after mailing in the old one..it cost about $39 but thats not too bad considering the price of a whole new body...
Before I put her back together, I'm sanding down the knee joint/teeth on the lower leg parts, and reinforcing the weak places on the upper legs with some epoxy..hopefully that'll help prevent future breaks

    15. Of course! You're completely correct, a few broken legs isn't a reason to start a mutiny against Volks. However, it's still a problem, and it really needs to be addressed. Because if it isn't, it's going to end up hurting the company eventually, yah?

I brought my SD Megu with me, but when I went to sign up for the doll doctor, they had stopped taking people because they were so backed up. So I never got to go in. :(

I think the SD boy body is pretty much a boy's torso with the same arms and legs as the SD girl's body. So the problem may be present in SD boys as well.

Let me just say that I don't think it's a matter of bad quality control that's making these breaks happen. It's a problem that(usually) doesn't appear until much later.

I'm so glad that you guys have gotten replacement parts! Keep it up, I highly advise everyone who has the broken leg to attempt to get a replacement. I'm certainly going to try, $39 is worth the peace of mind of not having a broken leg on my doll! :doh ;) Also, a large number of broken legs being sent back as proof would be excellent. That way, they can have the damaged part to inspect with their own eyes. :D

    16. I'm afraid that I'm going to have to disagree on this. Of course, I believe Volks has a very high quality, and I own a few Volks dolls and would absolutely buy more. However, I think the sheer amount of people who have experienced this problem on DoA alone is enough to suggest that this is a real and common problem, probably more common then we realise. I'm not suggesting that people shouldn't buy SD10 bodies though, only that they should be extremely careful with them.

It's defiantly a problem that needs to be addressed by them at any rate, and I don't mean by just replacing broken parts (though that's defiantly a step in the right direction). Sometimes I can't help but think that if this was a smaller company we where dealing with, something would have been done already, though you could argue that a smaller company would mean less dolls sold and therefor less instances...

      :sweat

Anyway, it's nice to see that Volks are replacing leg parts by mail too! Does anyone know if that extends to international customers also? I already have someone very kind taking a trip to the LA sumika for me, but it would be useful to know!

    17. Interesting thread. Sorry to hear about the leg breakage, but glad to hear Volks is starting to replace parts. I'd be upset too if my doll broke the same day I brought her home. I've heard about the leg breakage problem for a while now and it seems that a little re-engineering on the leg molds would help.

My Carol, which has the Swaricco legs and is rather loosely strung is a fit model so she gets a lot of handling and she's fine, but apparently these legs are different... I play with Emma, my SD13, another fit model every day and I'm careful, but not obsessively. The kids and my husband pose them too, so they are exposed to a lot of handling. I've had Emma since April and Carol for 2 months now and they are both fine. Going to look at at Emma's knees though just to be sure.

Apoxie sculpt seems to work well for fixing stuff up. You can tint it with paint to match your doll. I haven't tried it myself, but I've seen some modded dolls and the results look really good.

    18. I have three SD10s. All pure resin, and I'm the only owner. I have Michele, Ushiwakamaru, and Shiratori. Michele being the oldest, and about 3 years old.

None of mine have even a hair line fracture. I'm wondring if people aren't sanding the seams down too much and making the resin thin in this area. I don't sand a seam unless it's really bad.

Any of you who've had the leg replaced did you ask Volks why it was happening?

    19. The thing that I'm not sure about is if Volks will replace the broken legs that I have as both of my dolls were bought on the secondary market. I have been able to get in touch with the original owners to get the answers to all of the questions that Volks asked but I haven't heard back from them. I'll update the thread with whatever happens.

    20. Well, good luck with all of it. I hope it works out for you. It's a shame, because the Volks bodies are really nice otherwise.
