Volks pureskin SD, SD13 leg break

Jan 12, 2006

    1. Volks didn't say anything to me about why it was happening, but they weren't suprised and were really easy to work with in regards to getting a replacement leg.

Oh, and I didn't sand ANY of my girls seams, so the break didnt happen due to overtly thin resin on my part. And I'm the original owner.
(I love the seams oddly enough.)

    2. I've tried to fix this myself with no luck, and sent a email to volks to see if they might replace it. If they don't I'm still going to need help. My Magical Michael SD10 body has a break on the locking knee, on the side. It keeps him form standing properly and makes me sad to look at...I can't fix it.

      Please help?

      Volks International Site's email...
And when I brought the problem to the US store

And so I'll send him off after halloween, when I get the peice I'll update here. I plan to reinforce both joints with apoxie and sand down the knee joint when on both legs to stop this problem from ever hapaning.

All in all I really think Volks needs to get on some re-designing of that joint.

    3. Keep in mind Volks specifically says not to do forced swaricco poses with the non-swaricco legs. It's not the design, it's the misuse of it.

    4. Just to report back, I shipped my broken thigh pieces off to the LA store along with my money order and they shipped back 2 brand new thigh pieces. I'm very happy with their service :D

    5. I disagree, I think it's definatly a fault with the design. The thinness of the resin on the outside flap makes the resin weak when the knee is bent too many times, due to the ball of the knee being ever so slightly too big and pushing on the thin side, eventually causing a crack.

There are ways of preventing the crack with extreme carefull handling, but it's not just down the the way the dolls are handled.

    6. Yes Volks needs to make a more durable leg design, but that doesn't mean you should tempt fate. I prefer extremely careful handling to broken doll legs any day.

    7. Who was doing that with their dolls?

    8. Maybe it's just me, but wouldn't it be more economically sound for Volks to just redo the entire design and not have to deal with more breaking, replacing, and all of that? Unless they're somehow making money off of this leg breakage, which would be kinda icky. :| I still don't get why Volks didn't immediately rectify the problem, unless they have hundreds of SD10 bodies with bad legs in stock.

I mean, yeah, they'd have to come up with a new design, new mold, etc, but eventually the lack of reciprocal casting, replacing, and all of that would make up for the time and money that would have to be used in a lump sum.

I just don't get it... and I'm definitely not getting an SD10 anything ever unless the design is fixed. x_X; What a pain.

    9. Well in the end, these dolls weren't made for displaying. I'm not saying that we should be able to be extremely rough with them, I'm just saying they should be able to handle more then they are. I had to resort to keeping my girl's leg straight at all times to keep the crack from getting any worse, and all that really did was slow it down. As a result I'm selling her, because I actually like to play with my dolls and not have to treat them like porcelin dolls. :( I didn't pay so much to have her sit on a shelf.

It just really saddens me that even after all the complaints to Volks about the problem, they're still not doing anything about it. Not even a warning to potential buyers that handling them in a certian way could cause the legs to break, which in my opinion is poor customer service. I respect Volks and their products, but this is something which really makes me disenchanted with them.

    10. To be honest I was slightly disappointed with this issue - I bought a Volks product because I wanted a quality, durable, posable figure and I always had the notion that Volks embodies these qualities. After i evaluated it, yes volks quality is good, the resin is good, the posability is good, the sculpt is excellent, but it was that one slight design variable that is causing this issue and no matter how good the resin is, the resin will eventually break if there is a single concentrated point of friction that is not resolved. I just hope they fix this problem in their next version release.

    11. There has NEVER been a case of SD13 boy legs breaking reported on DoA. I really doubt your boy will break his leg. I have three Pureskin SD13 boys, two of which frequently sit with their legs hanging down, and they are 100% fine.

    12. Thank you for the reassuring post usagi. I do notice the sd13 leg does have thicker knees and that can only be a good thing.

    13. Yes the resin is very thick, I don't notice the thickness on the sides being different like it is with some SD10s, there's just something with how the ball of the shin part sits in the socket..I always have one of my boys sitting on the edge of my desk and their legs are just fine so far. If something does happen I'll definitely post..since it'll mean six broken legs here *_*

    14. lol yes, the knee designs of the SD13 boys are way different. The resin on the knee flaps is way thicker! I doubt that would ever break! I'm glad, because I really love my Volks boys!

I've heard of it happening with SD13 girl bodies, but I've never seen their knees in person, so I can't really comment on it.

    15. I just compared the side flaps of my SD13 boys' knees to my SD13 girls' knees, and the resin is much thicker on the boys than the girls.

    16. Reviving this thread, coz Mikel suffered the same fate >.>; My friend and I...are not sure whether he arrived like that or I did it, since I can't find the missing piece (I think it's just it went flying into my room somewhere). I didn't even notice it, that's the thing, until I was putting on his knee socks. It's not such a huge deal, since I had seen this thread and was prepared to deal with it, but it is a little annoying...and I probably would never get another SD10 because of it, even though I wanted Megu so badly >.>

Not to stray the thread away or anything, but does anyone know if it is possible to put swarrico legs onto my boy's Magical Michael body? Because I had been planning that all along, if possible, anyway ^_^ ( and if anyone can help me with a temporary sculpey fix or something....please do? I had planned to just glue the piece back, but it's way MIA right now -_-; )

    17. If he's brand new then send him back now to get fixed, the warranty will work for up to seven days. The swaricco legs will not work for boys because the torso they use is entirely different :\

    18. does anyone know if the sd10 suwarriko bodies have the same knee breakage problem?

    19. As far as I know, they don't. The knee joint area was redesigned to accomodate the sitting position, and it [inadvertently?] made it more safe just for regular posing as well.

    20. I am curious about which knee design are we talking? Cause I know their are pureskin bodies with the square knee shape and the other knee type(looks more like the oldskin knee part but nicer).
I've seen one with the square knee and that knee had the same problem.
But do the recent Sd and Sd13 knees have the same issue? Or only the square shaped knees?
