Volks Super Dollfie - SD, SD13, SD16, SD17, SDGr, SDGou & FCS - XXXII

Jan 9, 2022

    1. Coincidentally these use the new frame too.. but no way was Volks just using up the last stock of the old frame…

    2. Maybe too many complained about the way the different coloured joints harm the overall look of the dolls, so they caved in? I'm surprised they would relent at all

    3. Short unboxing video of Elsa, I put Cinderella in the background to welcome her new friend :XD:

    4. When Anthy arrived with matched joints, I suspected this was coming. Still cherishing my first-run Icon, but I may need another one now.

    5. Oh man, the icons are so cool. I was super put off by the mismatched joints when they first came out. It looked like an unprofessional and lazy decision. Now if they made elf ears an option, my wallet would be deceased! I hope they expand this line now that they're making the dolls properly.

    6. I have Clover and Lilac from the last two summer lotteries. While I am fine with the joints, I am liking the new face sculpts provided! Wonder if they might switch up their skin colors later? Like maybe Nikki in Twany?

    7. Oh no! Are the new sculpts only in the colors shown in the pictures? I want all color options for all the heads. I really like this line because it's such a nice balance between anime and realistic styles.

    8. Probably because they got so many complaints. On one hand they look nice and it's good to see large companies making wanted changes, on the other hand I hate to see artists censure themselves due to negativity.

    9. What gets me is that they refuse to sell the matching frames to people who got the first Icons. Honestly I'm shocked. After pretending the mismatched joints were a purposeful decision, matching them now is basically admitting that they simply couldn't be bothered to do it before. And then won't allow existing customers to update their dolls?? Not cool imo :eusa_naug

    10. Well the f3 frame and many parts of the DDIII body are not compatible. Besides, I have never known Volks to offer options after a "correction" or update.

    11. I’m a bit confused at the idea that this is proof that Volks ‘always could have done this’? It’s never really been a secret that Icon’s initial purpose was something fun and experimental to use up the old DDIII frames. Otherwise, what purpose would there even have been to have them on discontinued bodies…? It doesn’t make sense, nor is it cost effective in the slightest, to develop *new* DDIII frames in new colours when DDIII aren’t being developed for any other reason.
But now that Icon has proven its own popularity (and probably ran out of frames), it’s well worth the investment to move to f3 - the current gen DD body, meaning it makes sense and is expected to make coloured frames, since those are the frames currently in production -now-.

Unfortunately f3 and DDIII are different bodies with different comptabilities, that’s all there is to it. It’s not that ‘Volks always could have done it’, because then they would have done it to begin with. Besides, people bought the old ones knowing the frames didn’t match so I don’t know why they’d be mad they do now, especially considering the entire body is different, given that it’s now d3.

    12. I am definately not mad with my Icons. I adore them and prefer my "old" Lilac's faceup to the newer versions (speaking for myself).

    13. I could have sworn that after updating the SD17 body's knees, they allowed owners to buy the knee parts for their old SD17s.

      • x 3
    14. If that was always their purpose to be experimental, then I understand Volks too I think. Actually it's cool that they re-used parts that perhaps would have otherwise been thrown away. It's something I hope a lot more doll artists would do with their discarded resin pieces, like test-casts or miscasts etc. Make something out of it, not throw so much away.

    15. They did allow you to purchase new legs, but the difference would be that they felt the original legs were flawed and needed replacing. It wasn't over an aesthetic choice but an engineering problem. I think you had to send back the old legs and pay about $117 for the replacements. I kept the original legs on my first SD17 guy and worked in a knee problem storyline to explain his odd knock-knee stance. I really would not have wanted it for all my SD17s.

I would point out, that just because they are not immediately selling new frames for the previous Icons doesn't mean they never will. I've seen them say no to making or releasing things before only to see them sell that thing two years later. A "no" from them is not a "never".

I can't say I care for the new faces. It's cute to see the Disney-fication of the resin dolls but seeing that style on vinyl - they start to look very play-line to me. Not that I'm their target audience for these, but I like the previous heads better. If anyone hasn't seen these vinyls in person, the colors are really gorgeous - I'm a huge fan of the pearlescence. Photos really don't do them justice.

    16. Nice to hear some positivity surrounding the Dollfie Icon here. It seems to be teeming with negativity most of the time, but I understand most people are just venting frustration.

    17. I think it's exciting to see that ICON is getting another release! ♥ Old frames or new frames, I think they're a fun and different doll to see in the overall Volks offering.

    18. I have to second this. I was a little 'meh' on the concept at first, but then (if I'm remembering correctly) Volks showed the Icons at SDCC. Seeing them in person was an entirely different experience, and when we went to LA Dolpa my spouse was absolutely captivated by their look and color, he insisted we needed to enter for one and after some frantic rock-paper-scissors we walked away with a Clover. It's so hard for a camera to capture the way their skin looks in person, the shifts in color and light on it. Using the more SD-style makeup in such a glam style really set them apart both from DD and from the mainline SD. While there haven't been a lot, quantity-wise, that have been released, I really feel VolksUSA has tried to follow up and make add-ons available (the additional outfit pieces, hands in all of the Icon-only colors).

    19. If memory serves correctly, I think the SD17 trade in was also a campaign? Or maybe I'm just getting this confused for North America? Tenshi no Sato may offer the trade in currently but otherwise, it was offered on a campaign basis. Hard to keep track. *_*

Yeah, I remember Volks marketing the Dollfie Icon with the different colour joints as an intention vs we can't do it. A future trade in service is plausible. With Volks, anything is possible. What they couldn't or wouldn't do today, doesn't mean that will be the case tomorrow.

    20. Hearing this makes me really curious about them and pushes me more in the direction of wanting to buy one too XD I'll have to hold back though, already have too many doll plans...
