I think your Madoka looks really sweet, @Cap'n! It is always such a hard decision to wipe an old faceup, especially after you've grown attached!

I'm struggling to decide whether or not to wipe this old gem. It's the ultra-limited Dolpa 7 Limited Head (D-7) from 2002. It's essentially a Lady Sylvie head (before Lady Sylvie was made), but with Elf ears!

The faceup is definitely old school! But there's something charming in its awkwardness?

That's always such a tough call. Is there any damage to the face up?
It IS charming, but I've seen some pretty amazing Sylvie repaints too and she's got major potential in the right hands.
Not sure what I'd do in that situation since you have something so unique there!

 

No, there isn't really any damage! Just a small scratch to the sealant by her right eye. The owner really cared for her deeply. She came with a whole wardrobe and various ancient Volks wigs

I thought about sending her in for the current Faceup Renewal campaign Volks is doing, but I chickened out.

 

That appears to be an original K. Mayura faceup. Such a charmer, and a gem indeed!

 

How can you tell? Just the brows? I know that this head could have a custom faceup done at Dolpa 7, so that would be really neat if it was K. Mayura!

 

Wow! Usually I'm 100% in favor of repainting dolls, but honestly she's like a historical artifact! I can see why you hesitate to change her.

 

@IMySD, how long have you had this head? Don't be in a hurry to change her face-up; have some fun with her as she is for now. Those elf ears are darling!

 

Yes, the brows and the use of blonde eyelashes. Reminds me of old skin first edition Cecil.

 

Yeah, that's why I don't really want to tamper with her! According to Angelden this was potentially the first time you could get a FCS faceup, as previously the heads were all just sold separately and blank. So she's really a piece of Volks history!

I just got her a few weeks ago! I think I will probably just leave her be. She can hang out with my old Snow White Nono from 2000!

I am back in this forum after a long break. I am preparing to celebrate Isao Nanjou's 20th birthday in 2024. My doll is still in his company sealed faceup with hot glued eyes. I won't be touching his eyes but a new faceup for the next 20 years would be appropriate. I prefer a Volks artist to repaint him. I am hesitant to wipe off his faceup because it's still fresh, if wiped, it's gone forever.

@I<3MySD I know how you feel, once wiped, the faceup is gone, consider carefully. You can take photos of the doll with old faceup and archive the photos. When I celebrated Isao Nanjou's 10th Birthday, I made a photo book for him. Now, I am preparing his 20th Birthday! Another photo book. Madoka is 21 years old? I'd be careful before wiping anything off. Definitely take pictures of her.

 

@stargazer_i oh I love that little book you made for Isao! How absolutely sweet and thoughtful. That's probably really nice to look back on!

You've all convinced me, I'm going to leave it. I may try removing these eyes to give a more full-iris look. Less white of eyes showing might make her even cuter!

 

Happy 19th B Day Madoka! Today is January 4th 2023! Time flies quickly. There's something different about flipping real pages of a photobook rather than photos online.

In doll collecting, 20 is a special number, doll turns vintage (not antique). I cannot remember where I read about this but some Flickr vintage and antique doll groups up the age to 40. Personally, I think 40 is too much to ask, should stick to 20. Somebody contributed a 21 years old Nono head photo to the Flickr group "Japanese Vintage dolls". Vintage Volks Nono (Before Customization)

If you look at the aesthetics, vintage Volks BJD doll design and makeup is very very Japanese. That photo looks like it belongs in that group.

 

I am obsessed with this birthday book! I'd love to see some of the pictures from 2004 if you ever feel like sharing

I am not sure if we are allowed to share too many photos in this thread. I am not the doll's first owner. The second owner @chinadoll told me she bought him off a Taiwan auction site @chinadoll please correct me if I am wrong and if you read this post. The doll was sold naked with box shortly after the lottery in 2004. Both me and @chinadoll did not mod him. I subsequently bought back his full set outfit, boots and wig from the marketplace. He became a full set doll. I don't have his papers. The photobook shows him through the years with me. Of course, @chinadoll may have his earlier photos.
