I was hoping to get some opinions on a purchase I’m considering. I’ve never bought any large size doll before, but I’ve had my eyes on Date Masamune II for years and I fear that the window to obtain him is coming to a close.

I intend to display him in his included outfit and plan to buy a wig cap to help stop the hair color from staining, but I have concerns about his outfit staining him specifically where he would wear his eyepatch over the face. Also, does anyone know if the clothing pieces are generally made of leather or plastic? I saw a used one online and there was quite a bit of peeling on his eyepatch band so I guess it’s pleather.

I would love to hear some thoughts about him if anyone around here had one or has the older version.

I suppose how long it will last depends on how you will be storing him. Some years ago I bought a fullset Volks doll with pleather clothing and it was still intact despite its age (about 10 years I think!) because the previous owner took great care of the doll while on display, unfortunately, I live in a very humid place so the pleather peeled after some years.

 

I’ve got a date ii I’m shelling for an obscure touken ranbu character and while I love him, he stains VERY easily, especially at the joints. I’m just waiting for a day when I’m not so exhausted working and have him mostly stripped to get to work with soap and water.

There’s two on mandarake now I believe, if you’re looking to get version ii! One almost complete with pieces of the leather disintegrated, and one in good condition but missing the sword.

 

I own Date Masamune's clothing set, I believe it's the first version from the 2011 release. Only the clothes and accessories, not the sword or boots. I bought it secondhand and it was barely used (maybe never); I've since used it quite a bit.

Pardon the invasion of a non-Volks doll - this is my Dollstown Mui wearing parts of the outfit.



The kimono/hakama/jinbaori pieces are made of fabric that don't stain. I can't speak for SDGr Date Masamune, but my boy here constantly wears the clothes for weeks at a time, and they've never stained him.

The accessories on the left side -- sword scabbard, belts and hakama ties -- are made of fabric. I've never used them but I'm quite confident they won't stain.

The accessories on the right side are the fake leather ones and they're likely to degrade over time.



The brown chestpiece is pleather that flakes in pieces. When I received the outfit, this chestpiece was in pristine condition. I've since used it quite a bit, keeping it on my doll for extended time, and it's begun to flake and break. Now I only put it on my doll for photoshoots and take it off afterwards. I put him in a LOT of poses for photoshoots though, so that probably sped up the degradation.

I think the eyepatch is of a similar material as the chestpiece, not 100% sure. The inside of the eyepatch that touches the doll is made of white felt, so it shouldn't affect your dolls face if the front side and ties start to degrade.

The gloves may be a long-term problem, it's a different pleather material that disintegrates into tiny fragments/dust. They were in pristine condition when I bought the set, but when I pulled them onto my doll's hands I could see the pleather starting to disintegrate and create dust in the places where it stretched. If you look closely at the photo, the white specks on the gloves are where the black pleather has disintegrated. I've only used them once and taken them off, and I can anticipate this material degrading further the more I use them.

If you intend to display your doll in a static way and not do too much with him, the material may not degrade as quickly as it did for my set (I am constantly posing my boy for photoshoots). Of all the pieces in this clothing set, I think the gloves are most likely to get your doll stained or create cleaning issues. Maybe also the chestpiece, but it goes on the outside of clothes and doesn't touch resin. Definitely monitor him over time to see how the materials hold up.

I own a Date version 1. Mine never wore his outfit much, and I haven't taken out the pieces to check in years, but I can comment on the boots that came with him and the gloves. The boots completely gave way a few years ago, even though he didn't wear them often. One day I was shifting them around in the container I held them in while looking for something else and the sole of the shoes tore away from the uppers. I thought about trying to re-glue them together, but I never cared for them much so I haven't bothered.

His gloves are in surprisingly decent condition considering they're the one item he's worn consistently. They have started to fray around the tips of the cut off fingers and have some flaking, but are still largely intact.

 

I personally wouldn't spend more for old pleather, even if currently in seemingly perfect condition. If it's not destroyed yet, it will be soon after you touch it. I've had undamaged old pleather fall apart in my hands immediately. I'm not sure if Volks ever uses actual leather. Please tell me when they do because I'd want to buy it.

 

Even if you don't use the outfit, it can still deteriorate. Also if you put weight on it (such as stacking doll clothes together) the pleather can also crack. Perhaps silica packets will help? I don't think Volks ever use real leather. Maybe some boots they do? But I don't think they do for the clothing. My Volks Tony in my avatar is using Date's eyepatch.

I wouldn't keep the eyepatch on a doll for too long because it may damage the eyelashes and bent them out of shape. In terms of staining, I just avoid leaving any dark clothing and wigs on my doll for too long. I don't want to deal with staining. You don't know if it will stain until it already happened. Then again I also don't display my dolls so ^^

 

Black Saturn makes high-end doll clothes with synthetic leather, and their FAQ says this about caring for it:
