What amount is "too much" for clothes?

Oct 15, 2015

    1. everybody needs to know on his own how much he spends for something like this. If it was THE THING you were looking for for such a long time- why not. had this with the circus master Tedros Outfit- the only fullset fashion I ever wanted. But some peole just are "i have and Iple doll they just were Iple clothes". Ok- I can sew and save a lot of money

Congrats to your jacket. Am sure your hunk will be pleased to have it :D

    2. $50 for a shirt? maybe? Nothing is too expensive for a doll or clothes if it's the 'perfect' outfit for a doll/character when it comes to me, really... I want the dolls to look like I imagine them in my head and I don't like them having just one outfit they won't ever change out of.

That being said, sometimes I can get off cheap... some of my dolls can be dressed appropriately even with my level of expertise when it comes to sewing and since I like sewing I can make them several things myself... other times they require $150 per singular outfit (if not worse) because they won't settle for less or I need to commission them from a seamstress completely from scratch. I mean Grief alone isn't even home and I already own about $200 in the form of a single outfit + shoes set. And the same goes for Elliott, if I account his wig and eyes I've already crossed the $250 margin and I haven't even finished putting together either of his first two outfits I was planning. (one misses the pants and a necklace, the other misses everything but the pants and shirt).

I guess I kinda come off as a big spender but really... I just want my dolls to look nice.

    3. I'm revisiting this thread to say that I didn't go with the insane $250 order LOL. When Gloomy Sophia came out, I ordered her almost immediately(just the head, though). I'm totally happy because I got my crew completed way ahead of time ahaha.

Going back to the topic, I don't think I've ever seen a shirt that goes for more than $50. There is one for an off-topic doll, and I got a bit of backlash after stating I wouldn't buy it for that price LOL. I'm a quality over quantity type of person, but with a reasonable budget. I like my dolls to look nice, so I'm willing to take the extra step of giving them the best I can afford. I think the problem of my spending is how I'm hoarding clothes, but I consider them their own collection so there's that LOL. However, there's something I wouldn't pay more than an actual person's clothing; socks. I've seen socks that go up to $20 sometimes, and it gives me shivers. $10? I guess, it depends on the design and construction. $20 for plain white knee-highs sans shipping? I guess if I won the lottery I'd get it.

    4. I'm not a big name clothing person, quite the opposite actually. I make a lot of stuff for mine and buy stuff used because I just don't have that big of a budget for outfits. The most expensive thing I've ever bought new was a wig for $30 and that was very recently. That's not a normal thing for me. Usually I'm buying wigs at $15 or less used. I do bargain hunt a lot when it comes to the dolls, and improvise. They're getting a good wardrobe at this point but there are no $100 outfits in their wardrobe. I'd rather spend my money on the dolls themselves than on their stuff.

I am an admitted cheapskate when it comes to the stuff I can make or do myself. I did invest in some nice wigs and some shoes because I'm not that great on making either, cough, but even then mostly $15 a wig or $10 a pair for shoes was my limit most of the time. Dai finally got her fancy wig that she pretty much bugged me for from the get go but that's only because every other wig I tried on her just did not work at all. The other day I was looking at a new Happy Camille wig that has very unusual coloring that I just love but it's $40, and I just could not rationalize that. I mean come on, I could get 2 or maybe even 3 decent wigs for that on the market for the same money. If I ever saw it used under $20 maybe, but otherwise it's just not happening no matter how much I love HC wigs and I really do love them as is evidenced by the fact that 4 of my dolls are wearing the ones I've managed to pick up used.

I love my dolls and I like to spoil them but I do have to eat and pay my bills and if I was to start paying $100 a pop for fancy outfits they wouldn't have a house to live in for long and I'd have to sell them all off eventually. I'm a not so affluent person indulging in a rather affluent hobby. I'm well aware of that when it comes to making my choices. I will always put the resin itself before anything else. I didn't get 19 dolls by buying unwisely. Can make do otherwise and if my dolls aren't dressed in the most expensive designer outfits out there then so be it. In the end they will still have nice outfits if I have to make them all myself. They will have colorful wigs and decent looking shoes and the best face ups I can give them and hopefully they won't be TOO embarrassed by my humble attempts to clothe them.

More importantly to me they will all be in good company and they will have fun and each other. There will be no lonely dolls here. Theirs is a rather big dolly family, but I like to think a loving one. Everybody shares nicely, well, except for his Lordship, but he's whole other deal that one, and if things get a bit crowded sometimes that's fine. I can live with that and so far at least so can they...

    5. I bought my first doll but didn't get any clothes for her. It was pretty boring.
The second doll had a fullset but I couldn't do anything with her either. Just as boring.
The third doll came with shoes, a change of clothes, wigs...everything. He's my favourite while the other 2 have been left in the box of things I-need-to-sell. So I would say that clothes are very important. Even as important as the doll itself so if I can afford it, I'll buy whatever I need for them. Need a jacket? No problem! You think you look good in a suit? Sure!

    6. I love shopping for my bjds clothes. I've bought from high end brands like Nine9Style, Crobidoll, and Princess Doll (almost bought clothes from Sadol, but I went for their resin eyes instead) to cheaper brands like Alice's Collections, Rrabit, and Swdoll. I don't mind the price if I like the outfits a lot (though I still have a limit on how much I'm willing to spend). Fortunately, my dolls don't dress in Victorian Era, the price tag of those fancy dresses are enough to buy a doll or two. I usually go for casual cozy outfits, nothing too fancy.... However, I tend to shop too often here and there and those add up to be a crazy amount of $$$. But I want my dolls to have variety on their choices of clothing, I feel like if I only buy an outfit or two for each of them then that would be too boring. I'm also guilty of shopping for too many eyes and wigs... and when it comes to those things I only like to shop for good brands (Crobidoll, Leeke World, Enchanted doll eyes, Mako eyes, and etc). In the end, I do feel a bit guilty, since I still have floating heads in boxes without bodies, but I want my current "full" dolls to look nice too.

    7. After seeing how much clothes for an OBITSU were going on sites, I decided if I wanted it, I'd make it. I only have a few non-made by me pieces and even then I didn't go past twenty bucks. And shoes? I will pay 17 bucks for a good pair of shoes if I can find them and willingly.

    8. Yes I've spent over that amount just for one set of clothes. :(

    9. Before I got really into this hobby, I would have said $80. Oops. I don't even have one of the dolls I'm planning yet, and his coat is going to be ~250, because I need to commission a very specific one. If it's perfect for a character, I'm willing to spend a lot more money than I would for something that just sorta works. Jack had the perfect outfit in his fullset and as did Adriana, though for a lot of my other dolls I have planned, I'm going to have to commission people. I don't expect for it to be cheap.

    10. I actually find not being able to spend the money on stuff for the dolls I already have to be the most annoying thing about saving for a new doll. =P
I have 6 dolls right now and I love having tons of clothing, shoes, and accessories for them. I adore doll jewelry and shoes! As for clothing, I don't think I have a price limit. I'm much more likely to make their clothing, because I love fashion design and sewing--- it's one of my favorite things to do with my dolls. But I don't do it as a "cheaper" option, as I can easily spend as much or more picking out the perfect fabrics and notions for an outfit as I would have buying something ready-made. I just like doing it myself because it's fun!
But shopping for dolls is fun too. I do buy clothing as well, when it's something that catches my eye and seems super perfect for one of my dolls. I'll pretty much spend whatever I need to in order to have what I want for my dolls, since having lots of awesome wardrobe options for them and having each one dressed just right according to the personality I've imagined for them is a big part of what makes them fun for me.

    11. It's too much when you have clothes they have never used...

    12. I can't really say, because I like to get brand clothing for my dolls ^^;;;
I am very picky about quality and I have been buying clothing that is on the higher price end for my dolls. I am also very picky about the style so I don't usually splurge on clothing. So if it's something that I really really like and I want it. I don't mind paying high prices to get clothing for my dolls.

    13. It depends on a lot of factors, such as whether the outfits are for display or play, how difficult is it to find, how much you like it, and of course, what is the disposable income available at the time.

I'm okay with spending more on quality doll clothes I love than my own clothes because they last much longer and will always fit perfectly. And for me only having a couple really nice outfits for a doll is much better than having 20 okay outfits.

    14. While a lot of users here like to be "crazy doll ladies" I am one of the "crazy doll clothes ladies" ;) My real passion in this hobby is the doll clothes more than the actual dolls. The majority of my money spent in the hobby is actually spent on clothes, not the dolls.

The most I have ever and will ever spend for one doll outfit set is $2,000. Most of my doll's clothes were clothing sets that are handmade by famous seamstresses and most of them were $400-800, I've never bought an outfit that was less than $480 actually. :shudder It frightens me a little to realize this.

Because of the large amount of expensive doll clothing sets I have, with many of them being one of a kind works, I actually have an insurance policy specifically for my doll clothes in case there is ever a fire or other natural disaster where they are lost. I've spent over $6,000 on doll clothes and only around $2,000 on the actual dolls themselves.

The real funny thing about this is that I know how to sew and can easily sew clothing for my dolls, but there are still so many lovely outfits that I never would have thought up the design of on my own and I would like to reward those creative dressmakers by buying their clothing rather than attempting to imitate them. Depending on the design, clothing can be just as much a work of art as the dolls are! :aheartbea

So don't feel bad about how much money you've spent on doll clothing, OP. :) You're far from the only one here! I think people in general tend to have different areas of the hobby they spend the most money on. I have one friend who is a serious eye junkie and she's spent even more on doll eyes than I have clothes, haha.

    15. I will never spend more in a piece of clothing for a doll that I would spend in a piece of clothing for me. That's the only rule.
And it's difficult because good quality clothing for dolls is usually expensive, but I can say I have respected that rule for now.

    16. I'm cheap, so anything over 40 dollars is a no.

    17. The most I've spent so far is $250 and it was my holy grail outfit, original Cecile. I think my limit on most clothes would probably be $400 unless it was a very elaborate set or a commission. I don't feel guilty about spending the money because I cherish every piece.

    18. my problem is shoes and furniture! But for things that are well made I think you just have to pay what you have to pay :\

    19. Well, I am a former professional seamstress, so I make my dolls most of their clothes. I do like Iplehouse jeans and shoes for my Iplehouse dolls, and I have a weakness for Freedom Teller clothes. The most I have spent so far on doll clothes/shoes was $70 for their English riding boots, and $120 for a biker jacket from them. I don't think I would spend more than $200 or $300 absolute max on one outfit...and it would have to be TOTALLY AMAZING!

    20. As I mostly pretty tall men grace our house, clothing for them gets expensive. And as I own some really well-made and expensive pieces of clothing, some of them ridiculously expensive (yeah, I am looking at you, Iple biker leathers). But to me, it is simply worth it. As I am making most of my guys' clothing myself, I know how much material and time goes into the perfect outfit.

Therefore, too expensive does not exist for me. If it is worth to you, then the price is just right.
