What amount is "too much" for clothes?

Oct 15, 2015

    1. I have spent some nice money on doll clothes before. Mostly when I lived in Japan and would buy Volks clothing sets in person. That usually was max 75USD for the set.. However I really do draw the line on how much I spend on doll clothes. I refuse to spend more on my doll clothing than I do for myself. I just really cannot. I love having nice clothes for myself. So yeah sometimes I will order through luts and I did buy volks but usually it's more affordable things

    2. Once I stop buying new dolls I will probably be happier to spend more on their clothing. At the moment I've spent the most on acquiring my crew but when they're all finished with face-ups, eyes and wigs I should imagine clothes and props will become the main focus, and thus where most of my BJD money goes.

    3. It's normal! I admit I've spent maybe $200 on an incoming girl and I still don't have enough clothes for her!

    4. Personally I'm not sure what's too much. But I can say that all of my dolls are dressed in complete outfits including undies, socks and accessories + they have plenty of other clothes to change into. I'm never really spending hundreds on an outfit at a time but rather I'm always buying selected pieces that make up a total look. So by the time I factor in all the outrageous shipping from 5 companies - an outfit that might have cost $170.00 has actually cost almost twice that.

    5. I'm willing to pay a nice amount to get clothes for my dolls since their measurements are less common. For my personal clothes when I'm buying lolita, the most I allow myself to spend on a one piece or jumperskirt is 250-300. I try to stick around that area for my dolly clothes limit. The most I've spend on an outfit was $200, but I feel like the price was warranted considering it was for a bulky SD17 and relatively complicated. A lot of the time, if the price is worth it, I'll go for it unless it's over the limit I mentioned.

    6. I have been looking at my BJDs-related hoard, and I must say these things take more space than my BJDs themselves. I love buying clothes, but I like making them too. If there was a cheap 'machine sewing for your BJD' course anywhere near me, I would be over there like a shot, dragging my unused basic sewing-machine behind me. Come to think of it, a downloadable course would be far better.:3nodding:
I don't think there is a price that is too much for clothes, whether it is for human clothes or dolly clothes. It is all to do with how much money you can spare after necessities and common-sense stuff.
I'd love to buy Iplehouse:D, but I have no dolls of these sizes (thankfully!). My next doll will be considerably cheaper than an Iplehouse's, it will be more mainstream and hopefully, the clothes will be less expensive and the doll less tricky to sew for.

    7. Yeah this is exactly how I feel too. Not that I am in Lolita so my clothes are a bit less expensive but yeah. The most I spent was also high than usual because it was a cosplay. In general I don't spend so much on the doll clothes but there have been exceptions to it

    8. Things add up so quickly, so spending a ton is suuuuper easy. I don't think I'd be able to throw down $300 at once for clothing, but over a few months it'd be easy enough to do. I'd consider it the same as a lolita coord. You spend about $200+ for all the things you need, the tiny little bows and all the rings and accessories...once you realize the two hobbies have similar costs it gets a bit easier to spend. You don't feel as if you're throwing a ton of money at one thing only, you're throwing it at many things.

    9. I love beautiful things. My dolls are carefully selected and are imo beautiful, lasting little people who make me very happy to see every day. My dolls have been on the higher end of the financial pricing spectrum, but they offered exactly the aesthetic I want. It's basically investing in something that I will find joy in day after day, year after year. Sometimes that doesn't come cheap and I am in the position to be able to make these purchases. It's not impulsive, it's very premeditated and researched.

So, along those lines, I have spent a bit on quality and feel that if I am in the position, I will continue to make or purchase things with the same quality for my dolls. You wouldn't order a gourmet meal on a paper plate, right? Lol.

When I make headdresses for my dolls and for sale, I always always always carefully and thoughtfully select the best materials I can because of my principle. So, instead of plastic beads, I use real precious and semi-precious gems. I guess I feel that our imaginations should be rewarded with the quality, beauty, and uniqueness we all put into our dolls! And to be honest, when I sell a headdress, the majority of the funds go right back into buying the best materials to make another. :)

    10. yeah agreed. i think despite what i said about not spending a lot on my doll clothes when it's all added up it does cost a lot. But I am a bargin hunter through and through and I think they have nice clothes. I don't buy things I like just because it has a low price. I buy it because I like them and I also look for ways to have a new price. Also like I said I like to buy things in person (at volks) and save money hat way too.

Spending a ton is suuuuper easy but I am also reallly good at not spending that money in one sitting. And for me that's what I mean for being frugal.

And yes, it goes without saying that everyone should shop within their budget so that they aren't in a bad financial state because of it.

    11. It doesn't matter to me how much it is as long as it has enough quality pieces to justify the price.

$150 +shipping +pp fees for a single shirt? I don't think so. Don't really care how nice it fits...

$350 +proxy+shipping ... for a high quality 15 piece outfit that can be worn in all kinds of different ways ... maybe?

    12. So far the most I've spent on a single piece of clothing/outfit is around $40

I don't mind buying more expensive stuff for my doll if I really like it. I remember seeing a few outfits on etsy that were around $200+ each, so ^^

    13. Is there really a limit on clothes?

I guess there will be once I stop finding things that will "Perfectly fit his/her style." Until then, the limit is nonexistent. Well, as long as my wallet allows for it, of course.

    14. Personally, I just don't understand it when I see expensive dolls that are badly clothed, lack basics like shoes, or overall shoddily customized. The clothes make the man, as they say, and it's especially true for dolls. The doll itself matters a lot of course, but sometimes when I see how some people collect, you'd think the doll was 90% of the end-product and everything else was 10%. If anything, I think it's more 40%-60%. A cheap or less well-crafted doll can almost always still be made to be beautiful and much more valuable with the proper clothes, faceup, et cetera. But even the most gorgeous doll out there can easily be made to look cheap and ugly or boring with bad clothing and accessories, which sadly happens a lot in this hobby.

I aim for a small doll collection with a lot of accessories, and over the years I've come to realize that for me quality is kind. Quantity is important too, because I like options, but I will usually pay that extra for high quality if I can. Rather than any hard limit, what's 'too much' is whether the clothing's price matches the quality and quantity and how it compares to the established market. An outfit with many pieces, or extremely well-made, can be worth $100-$150. When looking at prices, I compare them to other similar items or quality from the companies I know: BlueFairy, Nine9Style, TTYA, Luts, Desers, DollHeart, et cetera.. When seeing a fullset outfit, I mentally break down what the price would approximately be for each individual item.

As an MSD-size collecter, I tend to limit my clothing purchases to a bit above the $100 mark for outfits and maybe $50 for individual pieces.
