1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I have never intended to put any doll on layaway, but sometimes you see a doll that you have been waiting for forever and you just don't have the funds for it at the time! I've been in this hobby long enough to realize that occasionally a dream doll will become available, and that might be your only chance to get it at that price, or at all.

So while I prefer to pay for a doll all at once, I really appreciate layaway for those times when you just don't have quite enough money, says the person with a doll currently on layaway!! D:

    2. I suppose it would depend entirely on an individual's income, and how they deal with carrying debt. For myself as a student, my income is completely unpredictable, and I use a good 90% of it for school and travel. I wouldn't feel comfortable putting anything on layaway in my current financial situation, because I am 100% certain I would have to miss payments, and that would a) stress me out majorly, and b) probably lose me any payments I had managed to make.

I always prefer to save on the side. My saving is really slow, and I have to dip into it often to cover overages in my budget. If my choice is get to school for the rest of the month or keep saving, I'm going to have to put money on my fare card first. There's just no other option for me right now! I would probably still prefer to do this if, in the future, I had enough disposable income to use on dolls without having to worry, mostly because I like to know that anything I owe has been paid off. I'm the sort of person who really dislikes having debts hanging over my head, so a layaway would probably rattle my bones until it was cleared and paid in full.

That said, though, putting a limited release on layaway from companies who offer it would be a good way to ensure that you had the doll you wanted, as long as you knew you would be able to pay for them in full eventually. Some limited releases are a lot more expensive than standard ones, and not having a thousand or more dollars on hand to instantly pay off what you've purchased is completely understandable.

    3. I always saved up enough money before I buy something so I've never tried to layaway.
I wanted to make sure that I will have enough to pay in time. If I use layaway method and some emergencies happens, I might lose track of payments. So, yeah, I pretty much want to pay it once and just chill, waiting for the doll. But that might risk me the chance to get limited dolls before they are sold out.

    4. I love it! I have a tendency to fall in love with limited or highly unavailable sculpts, often expensive, so layaway is my best friend. I currently have six dolls on layaway. However, I always know I will have enough to pay them all. I'm still in high school, and live home, so I have no expenses related to rent etc. I have work, and each month I use about 70% of my salary for dolls, and keep the remaining 30% should something unforeseen happen. I also know I won't be fired; I'm pretty much the most valuable worker at my workplace, because I'm effective and can work many shifts, but I'm working in a franchise, and technically I have three workplaces. Should the filial I'm working in now decide they need to shut down, the two others in my area would hire me "full-time" at once, since all three are short on stack. The owner of one of the ones where I don't work "full-time" has even tried getting me to relocate to her filial. And the whole franchise goes with a huge margin of profit, so there's no chance they'll be bankrupt any time soon.

    5. I'm not much of a layaway fan, I prefer paying things in full just to be done with it. I do have one doll on layaway at the moment though, due to her being limited and re-released at very short notice so I couldn't save up for her. What I like about it is that the saving-up happens while the doll is already being made, so it's half the wait for me. I might yet develop a taste for it :)

    6. I like the idea of layaway. When I buy a doll I have enough money to pay it off right away, I'm just not ready to part with it all at once XD What I usually end up doing is picking the layaway option and making my first payment but then not too long later I get impatient and I want to pay everything off as soon as possible haha.

    7. My godsend! I wouldn't be able to afford my boy if it wasn't for it!

    8. I am not very good at saving so layaway is great to budget funds, however I am not very patient and hate waiting for things. I have heard mainly good reports on layaways but you need to check the seller or companies policy on layaways before you decide.

    9. are you kidding i won't have any of my girls without it.
all hail the great layaway plans!!! :)

    10. I think layaway is good so that everyone has a chance to own their fave dolls :)

    11. I would be too nervous to miss a payment! I'm the kind to gather the money first, I was taught pretty old fashion things. Save up, then buy, personally I've found it made me appreciate the doll more and not feel like it was an impulse.

    12. I think layaway is great so that everybody has the opportunity to buy the dolls they want (they can be so expensive >.<) But at the same time, I think I'd be nervous about making the payments on time.

    13. Not a whole lot of difference between using layaway or putting it on a credit card, is there? I have yet to use layaway, as I feel very strongly about only buying something if I already have the money and can truly afford it, but I can see how it would help someone who is diligent in their payments.

    14. it's also good for us people who don't have a credit card or don't want one either.

    15. My grail doll is in development from a well-known (OT at the moment, I think) indie artist. I'm holding out hope, and keeping a Grail Doll fund, but I have no idea what the final cost of her will be or when she'll be released. It could be...well...years, or (SUPRISE!) next month. No clue. And my Grail Doll Stash might not be sufficient. So I'm glad she takes layaway, it'll give me some flex room for the unexpected.

    16. Far too stressful. I would rather just pay the doll all off in one payment.

    17. I love layaways its the only way I could have gotton some of the dolls I really want. I am not very good at saving money for things like that somthing always seem to pop up that I want. But with a laway I know each month I have to put X down for it and its easier for me to do it that way. As a seller somtimes I like that it helps out those who want somthing but just need a little more time to pay it off.

    18. The same anxiety goes through me when I think about layaway; I'd rather save all of my money up, and pay for it all at once! :)
That, and then it would help me from buying TOO MANY dolls. :sweat

    19. I really love having the option of layaway because it helps me manage the budget I have for straight away purchases. I only do a layaway if I could actually pay for it (but just don't want to part with the cash for psychological reasons) and plan to pay it off early, usually in a month. I am always glad when a company has a layaway but also a little happy too when they don't because I know for me it will keep me in check and keep me on budget. This is a pricey hobby, so many gorgeous dolls; and I can see how layaway makes it easy to potentially over extend financially or jump on an impulse buy. But the bottom line is that I think it's great because it allows many of us to stretch our budget and afford dolls that we wouldn't be able to otherwise.

I'd say for anyone considering layaway, give yourself some personal guidelines or rules so that you can keep everything manageable and enjoyable.

    20. Im not a big fan of layaway. I much prefer to just save up the money and pay for it all at once. I know myself too well Im not the best at managing money so when it comes down to it I would rather just pay it all at once. Although when I am selling a doll I don't have a problem with others doing layaway with me. Its just myself that can't pay for something using that option. lol.
