It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I love layaway, having to pay to support myself paying $200 a month for a doll is much easier on me than lets say $600 all at once. I think it's wonderful for those who need to use it, yes.

    2. While I accept that others might need layaway payments in order to purchase dolls, I don't see myself ever using it as an option myself. I would much rather save up and pay for a doll immediately, because thigns come up, and I wouldn't want to lose part of a layaway payment.

In fact, my friend was laid off from work the day after she put a down payment on her first doll's layaway. Now she's stuck either trying to keep making layaway payments without a job, and she chose layaway because she didn't have the full payment at the time, or losing her down payment.

    3. I think it is great as it allows people who don't have so much cash at the time being to own the doll they want

    4. I think layaway is a great idea. Because realistically, we all have to pay for many things. Petrol, food, bills, etc. And its hard to come up with say $1000 without having to pull it from other things. Its also good i think, because I am horrible at saving. However if I have a layaway, then I've already committed to buying the item, and I put that much more effort into paying it off.

I know I wouldn't be waiting on two girls to ship to me right now if it wasn't for layaway.

    5. I'm great at paying back, but horrible at saving without something very specific to save for - that's why all my 'doll-fund accounts' have failed in the past!

Personally, I am very grateful when a company offers layway and never abuse it - you never know what new doll is coming out and how you are going to feel about it when it does. With particular reference to limited's that are out for maybe only a short time or a short run, layway is necessary to give yourself a chance.

At the end of the day, yes, saving is the most sensible option, but you could argue that spending hundreds if not thousands on a doll (saved for or layaway) was not the most sensible thing to do in the first place...but that's just my being the devil's advocate!^^

    6. Layaway makes it a lot easier to buy dolls. I think it's nice that so many companies offer layaway. It's of course good for them, because more people will buy, but it's also a risk they're willing to take, because some people might not pay on time or at all.
Personally, I don't use layaway that much, I only have for two dolls or so. But it was nice being able to use it. ^^

    7. I love layaway because it will take a few months to get the doll (in some cases) anyway. Layaway, for me, makes the wait seem much less bothersome. I can tell myself, "Well, they're not paid off yet so there's no use fretting." :)

    8. I love layaway and use it on other things, like antique jewellery, as well as dolls

    9. I prefer saving up so that I can pay in full. I feel better knowing that I don't need to worry about missing a payment or scrambling to come up with the money for the next payment. I can be a bit forgetful so while I think I could successfully accomplish a layaway one day I would just stress myself out thinking about it xD Better for my mental health to give the money all at once!

    10. I love layaways because it is helpful in ordering limited dolls, and breaking it down to smaller payments makes it seem I'm not spending too much in one go.

There would also be some money put aside as savings in case I'm a bit short with a payment, though it would be a bonus if I don't need to dip into it.

I would only really feel comfortable doing a layaway with a reputable company or dealer, if I need one with a private seller I would keep it really short like within 2 weeks in case something happens to the seller so they can't ship in a timely manner.

    11. I'm not a big fan for layaway options. Allthough I have used it for my first doll I'm not going to use it anymore. If I don't have the money to buy that doll even when it's a limited version I'm not buying it.
The reason that I used layaway for my first doll was that I saw her in real live and I just fell in love and I wanted to buy her no mather what. Even if I could only eat water and bread for months I would have done it for her. Also the fact that she was a limited and the only one that was up for sale that time made me to use the layaway option

I do think it's a nice option when you see your dream doll and it's the only way of getting it

    12. layaway can be a great thing as long as it's a trust worthy place because if you have to file a paypal claim/dispute you'll only get your last payment back because they don't cover things done in payments (unless you use your credit card, I think the company can go after the other payments but not 100%). I have thought about it but I'd rather just save up and pay it all off at once because I like doing it that way :D to each their own

    13. I have always preferred to pay things at once when buying from other countries, precisely because I would rather have the security of having my money back if something went wrong!
Until I sae some limited dolls that I feel in love with.
I simply had to have those dolls! :p So when it comes to BJDs, because you have to spend so much money on them, I think having layaway as an option really is a wonderful thing!

    14. I normally prefer to pay all at once for a doll if I can afford it. At first I thought that when paying layaway, there would be interest added to sum every month, but I found out it's actually not true. I would agree to pay layaway for a very expensive doll (in fact I'm doing it for the first time now), though it makes me a bit nervous that I might fail to do the other payments for a reason. I guess I'm a little paranoid. :)

    15. Couldn't agree more! Saving money for me always means spending it on necessities and let's face it - what frickin' fun is that??? In my opinion layaway IS a savings but instead of putting it in an account or hidden place it's going straight onto the doll. PLUS, my order goes in once I place it - why should I pay all at once and then sit and wait 3 months when I can take the time to pay off the wait and have any monies left over for what else I may need at the time? It feels better to me to pay off the production time.

I don't appreciate the snobbish views on layaway; if you have the money to pay for dolls at once then good for you, it must be nice to have a steady income. Not all of us are in the same boat right now. Layaway is quite useful for a variety of reasons. One day I'll get back to work and will be able to buy dolls on the spot, but could well still end up using layaway services because they're just too convenient. Especially if I have to wait out several months anyway.

    16. I love layaway! It allows me to participate in events, which I could never do otherwise. You never know when the company of a doll you've been eyeing up will begin some kind of event. So, if you've been wanting it, but just don't have the money to pay it off all at once, it's really nice to be able to buy the doll and still get the benefits of the event, all while being able to budget it out over a few months. It takes off a lot of burden. I'm doing a layaway on a Luts El right now, which I couldn't get if I wouldn't have been able to put him on layaway. Not because I can't afford him, just because when I happened upon him in the Marketplace I just didn't have the funds all at once. I know I'll have enough to finish the layaway by the second week of June, but I needed layaway to allow me to wait that long to finish the final payments. :)

    17. I bought my Ryuna from Dreaming Doll using layaway, the most wonderful thing was these: the store send me my Ryuna the day I finish the payment and she comes home one week later, that was hilarious.

But sometimes you can be in a hurry during the payment so that's why I didn't use layaway all the time.

    18. As a buyer, I'd never use a layaway option as I'm too impatient to wait out a doll. When I want a doll and find one for sale, I want him/her as soon as possible if it's applicable (not a pre-order). I do understand the necessity of layaway though for others and always am willing to offer it as a seller. :)

    19. I've never used layaways, but I've considered it. I think I'm too impatient to do it, though. XD When I buy something, I want it now! That said, I've been contemplating buying my next doll on layaway, simply because I've spent so much on the hobby this month. Spacing out the payments and thereby making myself wait would probably do me good. :P

Layaway is definitely a good thing, even if I'm too impatient for it!

    20. I used layaway once and it was to buy a limited edition doll, not a BJD though.
I was thinking of starting a layaway for a Littlefee Ante but I think I will save the money instead. I'm afraid I might lose interest if I do the layaway, plus I might end up spending more money in doll things than I should.
I would do a layaway for a very expensive doll or a limited edition one.
