1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I think it's a god send! seriously I would never had been able to buy my beautiful Anthony doll had MoC not offered layaway. However if the problem at hand is that you feel you would not have the money to pay it off then I offer this advise. When I ordered my Anthony doll I had two jobs and made more than enough to get him in a three month layaway but erring on the side of caution I went with the six month just in case. I already had almost half the money put aside when I made the first payment. And it was a good thing too not two weeks later I quit my job when the store owner decided to cut back everyone's hours. I just saved money here and there so that when the payments came I had more than I needed but only paid the minimum. The idea being if I managed to save the remaining balance I would simply pay it off in full. While I was unable to get my doll out early since I had began saving for the full balance ahead of time I always had the money with out issue, I always had the money a month early.

    2. Layaway is good & without it lots of collectors wouldn't be able to bring home their dolls. I pay outright where I can but have used layaways & so far, haven't had any problems ;)

    3. I agree with Tracy Angel ,I think layaway is a good thing too , especially for very expensive items, because without it a lot of people couldn't have access to some beautiful dolls...

    4. I think it's great that the option is there.
Personally I have so far always chosen to pay for my dolls right when I order them, though. I have a vary small income, but it is steady and my living costs are not that bad and also predictable. So while it's small it is fairly easy to manage. I prefer to set a little aside whenever I can on a separate bank acount so that i have a buffert for whatever life thows at me. There is usually enough money left after life have had it's share so that I can afford something hobby related every now and then. It takes a bit of patience, but I'm better with patience than with keeping track of extra bills.

And if (ehum... when?) the day comes when I get the chance to buy a doll I simply can not pass up I know there will be money there. It is mainly a matter of priorities I think.
And both ways to go about it is fine. We all know ourselfes and our own economy best.

    5. I was very happy to be able to order my first doll through layaway (made her final payment today!). I had already saved up some money, so I had a good idea of how much I could afford for each monthly payment based on that. I also hate waiting.

Before making my layaway plan I checked to see what the avg time was for the company to produce and ship the doll, that way I was able to figure out how long the layaway should be for me so that she should be arriving in a short time of when the dealer put the pre-order in with the company. I realize that there may still be delays, but it seemed like the best option for me.

I could make sure that I was only saving a small amount each month for my doll, and I would be making payments on her until about the time that she should be arriving from the company. Not to mention, since I went through a dealer in the US (Mint on Card), I was only charged shipping from them to me making it much, much cheaper.

    6. layaway is good actually, but im quite impatient so i dont think it will work for me >.< but i might consider it in the future

    7. I've used layaway twice...the first time I tried to figure the payments so the doll would be finished about the same time time I paid her off (I was off by 2 weeks). The second was for an instock doll that I didn't have the money for right at that moment..so l put her on layaway and will pay the balance this Friday actually (the following month).
I plan on using layaway again. I will continue to try to work it out so I am paying as they are making my dolls. I think I would go crazy paying a bunch of money upfront then waiting 4 or more months for my doll to come in. This is a lot easier on my nerves. :)

    8. Layaway is how I've purchased half of my dolls. I like stretching the expense over a few months as well as having less of a waiting period once I've finished paying!

Like every one else has mentioned, it really just depends on your own mentality and finances.

    9. I like layaway as an option because Fates hate my bank account -.- If I save up a lot of money in the 'expendable' budget, it most guarantees a catastrophic car issue or illness or a tornado hitting my house. I try to keep that budget small enough that the Fates don't want to bother with it. Don't think I'm not responsible! I am, I have the 'emergency' account that is not to be touched ever except ... well, except when I tempt Fates and they eat my transmission, or something else that eats the emergency fund and all other available cash. -.- It would be funny how this always happens, except it is not funny one bit when it happens. I take my fun in little bites, and am glad there are options like layaway.

I emailed someone today on the MP asking if they would consider me a candidate for layaway even though I'm new here. The doll is not expensive, but I have to arrange a secure mail drop before I could have it delivered since the post workers will no longer leave parcels due to thefts and have cut hours so I would have to turn clients away to go pick up a parcel.

Goodness this turned into a bit of a whinge, dinnit? ^.^ Sorry! But that is why I am happy there is layaway.

    10. I think if it helps people own the doll they want, then it's great! I think the idea of paying over time to me personally is easier than buying the doll outright, especially if you are waiting for them to be made.

I think problems only arise when people do it because they don't have (and don't forsee themself having) the money and can't pay the layaway, or when people expect there to be a layaway option because many places do it now... but thankfully, this seems few and far between.

    11. I think it's good to buying people, but maybe little confused to others..

    12. I think layway is a really good idea, especially when the doll you'd like to purchase has quite a dhort pre-prder period and you just might not have enough money to make the whole payment at a time.

    13. Ahh, I agree! I feel more comfortable paying everything off in one swoop, as I am extremely impatient . . . But I feel that if there was a doll that I truly wanted and I didn't have the total amount, I'll use layaway for sure, though only if I'm certain that I will have enough to pay the remainder.

    14. I was up to my eyes in debt about 12 years ago and got credit blacklisted, had to struggle to get a bank account, couldn't get a mortgage when I wanted to buy my council house, etc. So I am very wary of getting in debt/financial commitments/credit and would never buy a doll on layaway.

I use a catalogue for necessities like carpets, furniture etc. but I wouldn't get in debt for luxuries - and dolls are a luxury. If I don't have the full cash amount, or won't be getting the money in a couple of days (paypal don't debit your bank account for a couple of days) I won't buy it.

So a lot of dolls are out of my reach/off limits - I just admire them but never even dream of owning them, and I'm OK with that - it doesn't make me miserable as they aren't essentials in life, just the icing on the cake :)

    15. Layaway's are great for people who have a steady income but just don't want to 'shell-out' their buffer for one major purchase. Without a Layaway option, I'm sure a lot of limited and expensive dolls would go unsold and unmade. I'm happy people are so willing to allow this option.

    16. I like to save up, but I'm tempted to open a Layaway for a Luts Honey Delf.. bc there always seems to be something that comes up & I feel like I'm never going to get another doll. 45 day & the payments can be made twice, or 3 times.. if you order is over $300 with a doll in the order.

If anyone's budget can't handle to make layaway payments then it's not worth the risk of losing the money that was already paid to open it up in the first place. That would just make me sick. :(

    17. I think layaway is great. It makes it possible for people to afford more expensive dolls and it to me is nice for those who want a doll in say.. 6mths, but there's a long wait time or you know its going to take at least 2 to 3 months min. before you get the doll. Not shelling out all that money at once and then having to wait helps I think.

    18. I think doll sites that allow layaway are a wonderful things, since obviously not everyone has the full amount of money you need to purchase a doll sitting around. I don't think money should ever be a issue in a hobby, and the layaway make it easy and affordable to make small or large installments.

    19. I look at layaway as a way to get a doll without putting it on my credit card. I get to make payments, but do not have to pay interest. I also view it as a contract that I have promised to fulfill. I would not start one unless I knew I could finish the layaway. That being said, life does happen and one must be prepared to lose your money if you can not fulfill the contract.

    20. Personally, I don't like layaway, preferring having the complete sum to be paid at once - of course, if I have enough money. Layaway means that you have to plan your payments & deal with other expenses in everyday life, and if something 'wrong' happens - you just may lose everything as most of the companies & dealers do not refund the (whole) payment.
But I think it's a great opportunity, esp. for the newbies, and esp. for purchasing a doll that will be taken off the sales soon, as some just might not have enough money to pay the whole sum.
