1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I love layaway but I end up paying it off before my layaway is done. It's great for a more expensive doll. Though, you have to be careful with it because you have to make sure you have the money to pay it off that month.

    2. When you buy on layaway and the doll takes 30 to 60 days to deliver, does that time get used up by the layaway or does it only start accumulating after you pay in full?

    3. Love layaway. Layaway has saved my ass so many times. I almost always ask for layaway even if I can pay in full, because often if I were to pay in full at that time, I would then be totally broke. So it's better for me to spend a bit at a time, since I have a steady allowance from my parents and extra from babysitting jobs and the like. I think a couple of times I've been able to finish the layaway early for whatever reason, and then I get a doll sooner than I expected! I haven't actually used layaway directly from a company, since the majority of my dolls are second-hand, but I'm thinking about it for a couple of upcoming dolls...

    4. It depends on where you buy it. Some dealers, like Denver Doll, will put in your order right away with your first layaway payment. However, most doll companies won't even start your order until you're paid in full.

    5. I love denver dolls, I contacted them to see if they carry Supia dolls. Hope so.. or I guess I'll just have to save up the old fashioned way, eh? :)

    6. I love layaway, but doing long layaway's for high priced items from private seller's is a huge risk. I try to avoid doing that at all costs now unless I know the seller/buying directly from the company.

    7. Denver Dolls told me that Supia doesn't sell to dealers. So, I'm going to have save up for it. :(

    8. makes it easier, usually I only make 2-3 payments, as that's all I really need

    9. I like that companies have layaway and although I havent tried a doll layaway I have done retail stores and makes it much easier to be able to afford purchasing the item you really want because if one month you have more funds you can send and pay off sooner, or if strapped for cash can take the full time allowed.

    10. I love layaway options. with out it I wouldn't have been able to get my minifees.

    11. I appreciate layaway options (whether through the company themselves, or through a dealer reselling their dolls) when it comes to things like limited dolls or special sales. I've done two layaway purchases this year (and a couple more in the past, along with plenty of paid-in-full as well). One was for a boy who was on a significant discount; by using layaway, I was able to get him for the lower price, rather than having to save up and get him at a higher cost. I was also luckily able to pay him off early, and get him home sooner than expected. The other (who is still on order) is a time-limited doll who, while not expensive, keeps money free for holiday shopping and shipping by being held with a small deposit until all the end-of-the-year chaos is over.

I never put down money on a layaway, however, if I don't know I can afford all the payments as they come along. It's as irresponsible to do that as it is to spend the rent or bill money on a doll. So I've never had any concern about not being able to complete a layaway.

    12. I prefer to pay all at once, I'm too impatient to wait months and months and still have money I owe.

    13. I like the option of layaway, but I dislike using it...if that makes sense :'D
It's nice to know that when some limited, absolutely perfect doll gets released (or there's a great deal and passing it would be silly and more expensive in the long run) I might be able to get it with the help of layaway, but I definitely prefer ordering without it.
In five years of collecting I only ordered with layaway twice, but I had a few times were friends gave me money to order something.
I'm VERY stressed when I owe someone money, be it a friend or a company, so I always do my best to pay off quickly and I only take layaway when I know I'm capable of paying it off.
No gambling or hoping, a layaway is only okay if it's clear I'm able to pay it off, no matter what might happen.
I already had friends offering me money and I declined because I knew it would take me too long to pay it off.
Not to mention that something that is paid off belongs to you, completely, and no matter what might happen there is no risk to lose it due a lack of money. What's paid, is paid.

But I'm also not a person who constantly buys dolls so I have plenty of time to save for a doll, especially since I don't care for most of the limiteds.

    14. The idea is great because I use it for kmart for all my kids Christmas toys!! LOL, but I have yet to use it for a doll, but for me, I will use it because I can't afford to pay $300+ at once, payments definitely help soften the blow.

    15. I have not considered layaway yet. But I think it's a wonderful option for expensive dolls. It takes away a lot of the pressure that comes with spending a lot of money all at once.

    16. I like having the option of doing a layaway. Sometimes I can afford the doll all at once, but sometimes I need a little time. I wish Iplehouse did layaway on their doll choice dolls.

    17. I've only used layaway with resellers but did contemplate using the layaway offered on Soom or Denver Emporium. I wouldn't be able to afford dolls if layaways options weren't available.

    18. I have ordered direct and paid in full from Pipos and Luts, as they have amazingly short production periods. Layaway on Fairyland dolls from Denver Doll has been brilliant as a) they are efficient and know what they are doing and b) they order straight away. Other experiences with layaway through a dealer have not been quite so positive (for either me or them seemingly as they have stopped doing it).

My income is very erratic and I am being paid weekly at the moment so I simply don't get a big monthly chunk of money all at once. Having layaway also gives me the chance to sell one of my existing dolls (2 this month) to buy a new one on layaway and not risk losing an event/limited.

However, I may have to sell a kidney (joking) if Luts bring out the Tinytaurs again.

    19. Layaway is the only way I could participate in this hobby! I have a very low, but consistent income. With planning, I can easily make monthly payments. But if I try saving cash, the money just ends up getting spent on mundane household expenses.

    20. I love layaway, but trying to pay off as soon as possible.
