1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. I really appreciate layaways, personally. The Mushroom Peddler had a doll that I absolutely fell in love with, but they only have one and I was not able to just buy it right off the bat. I think it is great if you know what your income is going to be, and there's a special or limited item that you would are really desperate for. It keeps the one baby you fall in love with on first sight from getting away!

    2. Many of these dolls take a very long time to make so rather than waiting to earn the lump sum, I'd purchase one in layaway if I was short on cash.

    3. I think is awesome but I can't apply to make layaway because I don't work and so I don't have any stable income of money. I need to save up everything I need and then pay it all at once :( but as I pay in one exhibition then I have to wait less :)

    4. Layaway is the saviour of many of us doll owners of average means who doesn't necessarily have the money up front to buy all the new release limited dollies we fall in love with, or for planning out larger dolly purchases. Any dolls I have owned with a total value over $500 have been bought via layaway and many of my smaller value dolls too.
The only issue I have with layway is that it makes it so much easier to feed the dolly addiction :sweat :kitty1 Muuuuch better than racking up a massive credit card debt, though!

    5. I often use layaway- but I always pay them off well before the final payment is due. I know sellers like to get their money as soon as possible so I think it's only fair to concentrate on paying that balance off first. In saying that I'm happy to let my DDE layaway go the whole 4 months cause it'll take at least that long for the order to be made and I can use extra funds for other treats in the meantime :)

    6. I love layaway, personally! If I were dealing directly with the company, I might not use it, since most won't start production until the full payment is in anyway. But since I currently buy my dolls through a dealer, I like being able to spread my payments out during the production time- it's less daunting to save for individual payments than the whole purchase price at once, especially with events!

    7. I want buy outright if I can and have avoided a layaway thus far. It cuts down on waiting and I feel a bit uneasy about layaway.

I feel like if I started with layaway, I'd remove the last bit of discipline that I have left. Which is not good because I want to enjoy the 5 1/2 dolls that I have right now! I don't need or want any more (okay mayyyyybe a body for my floating head). I already have borderline too many dolls, so I want to just stop and take care of them. I have a blank head right now and an incoming doll that I have yet to even play with. There are so many other skills in this hobby to perfect. But, if I started using layaway... I'd have so many dolls!

Not to mention that I don't know if I can financially handle a layaway right now. That's another thing to worry about.

I don't want a pile of dolls and I don't want a pile of debt or lost money!

      No layaway please!

    8. Layaway is great! I've got my several of my dolls here from the marketplace thanks to sellers who offered layaways! But, there was a time, last year actually, that I had all the money to pay one of my grail bjds up front, but my credit card didn't and still doesn't allow me to send the complete payment at once, so I have to pay in installments anyways. So... Thank you so much to sellers that offer layaways. And bjds companies too! :D

    9. I love layaway! I normally have the payment in full for my dolls these days but layaway makes the wait time better and go faster and I normally pay in full when the doll is finished and ready to ship anyways.

    10. I wouldn't have any dolls if it weren't for layaway.

    11. I would probably have more bjds if the company I love had that option. I think it's great for those interested in Limited Editions and there's no need to "save up" and wait. Besides it doesn't seem like a high expense making several payments vs one large payment in one go.

    12. The first time I was going to use layaway I didn't know how it worked. So I emailed the company I wanted to buy from to explain to me how to do it, but the answer that I got did not explain at all how I was supposed to do. I wasn't able to buy the doll and shortly after that it was discontinued, I was so upset and I still am. At least now I know how to do it, and it is a good think to have sometimes, just have to remind myself not to buy too many dolls at the same time :)

    13. I was actually asking myself "why the heck do layaways even exist?" lol. Because I never actually thought they act like "reserving" a doll once you pay some of the amount. I just thought why won't people just save the amount by themselves instead of paying a company more than once while the doll won't even be produced until the final payment, but you clarified it for me, thanks!

Are there any more reasons..? I know some people say that it's easier on the conscience to pay bit by bit so as not to get overwhelmed, and it's understandable, but in the end, you will pay the full price, so it's basically like lying to yourself, haha!

    14. Layaway is fine as long as you plan it VERY thoroughly. If you haphazardly do it, it can really lay waste to your online billing accounts.

    15. Most everyone I know has many more dolls if they can use layaway and I am the same. I would like equal payments until the doll is ready to ship.

    16. I've used it to pick up a doll who was part of a deeply discounted sale event; yes, I could have saved up and bought him at the end of my layaway period, but he would have been considerably more expensive at that point, compared to the price I paid by electing layaway at the start instead.

    17. I love layaway! But I'm sort of impatient, and doing layaway keeps me from really regretting dropping so much all at once on something I have to wait forever for, ahaha.

    18. I think layaway is wonderful. I have used it before on 4 other expensive doll purchases and had no problems at all with it.

    19. I've only done layaway once. While I see it as a valuable option, if I can avoid it, I do.

    20. I prefer to buy outright if I can, but like having the option of layaway. It makes me feel less guilty getting an expensive doll when I can work overtime and pay as I earn the extra money.
