Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

    1. Layaway is a life-saver tool. Seriously, I hope that more companies offer layaway like Peakswoods. They have a 12-months layaway. That's a really great system for those with tight money, or students like me who doesn't love saving up.

    2. I think it's awesome that some companies offer layaways. It hurts a bit less than shelling out all in one go. I honestly never thought I'd use a layaway plan myself, but then there was an event for a doll that I decided then and there that I wanted. Hurr hurr. I do prefer to pay up front though, and if I do use a layaway I prefer to keep the layaway short and pay in bigger increments.

    3. I love layaway, without it I won't be able to get my dream doll.

    4. I am usually too impatient to do layaway . But I have had to do it before and it was helpful. I usually prefer someone to hold for a few days with a deposit.

    5. I've never had an experience with layaway, but from what I've read in the forums it'd probably be something I'd approach VERY carefully. I've read quite a few horror stories about dolls bought on layaway, or by people who have made partial payments and then the seller just disappears with their money D:

So I think I'd rather just stick to buying everything upfront without layaway payments, unless it's by a very trusted and respected seller. And even then, I'd be wanting receipts for EVERY payment and do everything through PayPal ;)

I know I'm probably being very suspicious, but these beautiful dolls are not cheap in the slightest, and for a lot of people it's months if not sometimes YEARS of saving up for them, so I'd need that security of knowing I'll get exactly what I pay for before I hand over any money at all.

    6. I haven't done layaway yet, but from what I've heard from other people, it's really great because it takes a few months for them to create the doll anyway, so making payments makes it more affordable for a lot of people and you wouldn't be able to receive the doll before then anyway. I'm seriously thinking about doing it for my next doll

    7. I thing I would love a layaway but the doll I want doesn't come with that option. :(

    8. Layaways are great! Especially for poor students like me! ;)

    9. Layaway is a great thing. I have a doll on layaway right now. I have one more payment and then she will be shipped out to me. I can't wait!

    10. I like layaway options because it does allow you to cut down on the amount of money at one time, making it more affordable. I've not really done a layaway with a Dealer or Company yet but I have done it with several trustworthy doll owners for second hand dolls. I really love that Mint on Card has a /six month/ option. I've priced out several things I wanted and that makes each month so affordable it's awesome. It's how I'd like toget Roary and a body for Antal. XD

    11. I think layaway is a great option for a lot of people. It's easy to create a schedule and stay on time with payments. It's a really great idea for limited dolls, so that way people can have the doll even if they cannot pay the full amount during the order period. I haven't needed to use layaway yet, but it's always nice to know it's an option. Of course things can go wrong and there are horror stories, but the same can go wrong when paying in full!

    12. They can be great (And I've done a layaway a few times in the past) as long as they're not used as an excuse to get a new doll when one really can't afford (and shouldn't buy) it in the first place. They can be really handy though, especially for unexpected limited dolls, where you only have a short amount of time available to actually order it.

    13. I like layaway options! ^^ I wouldn't have my limited full set doll without it. It also makes me feel a bit better rather than spending a lot of money on one go. I admit I occasionally get impatient and usually end up paying the layaway much sooner that expected. I completely agree that they're incredibly useful on those super limited dolls, or those discontinued dolls that are super hard to find in the marketplace.

    14. I have a second hand doll on layaway and was wondering some opinions as I'm not sure where I can ask this.

Is it being a bit ridiculous to ask for confirmation that the person received payment each time? Each time I send a payment I send a message saying that the money was sent and make sure you let me know when you receive it. Is this too much? Or is this a common thing most people do? Would it annoy you if you were selling a doll on layaway to someone?

    15. I don't think it is. When I had both my new Yo-SD and my second hand first MSD on layaway I always sent a confirmation of payment myself.

    16. I think layaway is great! I got my Little Fee from DDE on layaway, and it was really great way to manage the amount I spent. After Bills and Rent I have just a bit of wiggle room at the end of the month and I know I would blow handling the money in bigger numbers vs smaller increments.

    17. I also really like the layaway system. I placed my layaway order through Mint on Card and they've been very helpful and friendly during the process. I'm not always the best at saving up money because when I notice that I do have money saved up I often want to spend it on things I can get right away rather than things that I have to wait to be made then come in the mail. So I prefer it to be more like a bill because I'm more responsible about paying it. Then I also know how much I need to set aside each month to get my doll. Plus I figure if I'm gonna have to wait for it anyways I might as well spread out the payments so I don't have to spend so much all at once. I think if I spent the entire amount all at once I'd feel guilty about how much I spent. But having it on layaway gives me wiggle room within my financial budget and it feels like I'm not spending quite so much. I know its just a psychological thing but it makes me feel better about getting these dolls after 2 years of admiring them and thinking I'd never get one because they cost so much. With layaway these little beauties are within my reach :)

    18. I have used layaway on all my dolls but one. I don't think I'd be in the hobby without it. I even layaway some of the clothes I order from dealers so that I can get them in bulk.

    19. Layaway is pretty super. Since I have to wait several months for the doll to be made anyway, breaking the cost up into several payments makes it easier to fit into my budget than a big lump sum. I have a limited doll on layaway right now, actually. Even though I had the money to pay for him in full I just disliked laying out such a large sum at once without having taken my time, considered, and planned the purchase. I'm not an impulse buyer.... this is the first limited doll that has EVER hit me as a must-have. So I was a lot more comfortable with breaking the cost up and paying for him over a couple of months. This way I didn't miss his ordering period but I also didn't have to drop a really large sum of money on an unplanned purchase all at once.

    20. If I have money to buy, I pay immediately. If you I the desire and part of money, I can use the layaway. This is especially important in SOOM, sometimes I receive the salary when the sale is over =)
