1. It has come to the attention of forum staff that Dollshe Craft has ceased communications with dealers and customers, has failed to provide promised refunds for the excessive waits, and now has wait times surpassing 5 years in some cases. Forum staff are also concerned as there are claims being put forth that Dollshe plans to close down their doll making company. Due to the instability of the company, the lack of communication, the lack of promised refunds, and the wait times now surpassing 5 years, we strongly urge members to research the current state of this company very carefully and thoroughly before deciding to place an order. For more information please see the Dollshe waiting room. Do not assume this cannot happen to you or that your order will be different.

What are your opinions on layaway?

Aug 11, 2012

1. I am new so I'm not very familiar with layaway. I understand that you agreed on a payment term. I just want to know if the company only ...starts making the doll after the full payment is made? Normally how long does the wait after lawaway is (excluding the shipping period)?
So if someone is impatient, they pay the full amount right from the start and will they be able to get the doll faster? Or it doesn't matter if it's full amount of layaway, everyone will receive the doll at the same time?
How much extra fee is needed for a layaway?

2. Miss Era, it depends on the company. Some companies don't start until layaway is finished, others start when a certain percentage is paid, and others still may start when the deposit is made. Likewise, if you're doing layaway through a dealer, the doll typically starts being produced right away (they essentially front the cost and you pay them back). Not all companies offer layaway, but those that do will typically detail the terms of it in an FAQ somewhere--for instance, "Payment of only 3 even parts accepted," "$100 deposit, and the rest within 3 months," "Any deposit, the rest within 2 months" (the last is real; I did a layaway for a limited doll with a $20 deposit just recently).

If one is impatient, or if one has the money sooner than anticipated, then yes, they can pay off the layaway sooner. I've never seen this not allowed. However, it may or may not affect the shipping time for the doll; it all depends, again, on when in the process the doll is started.

Typically, there is no additional fee, but again, you will need to read the company FAQ to know for certain.

3. Awesome, thank you so much for the explanation! Really appreciate it.

4. I probably wouldn't be able to have my dolls without layaway! I can't work full time, so I don't make lots of money. Without layaway as an option, I probably wouldn't have dolls at all!

5. I love layaway. It is nice to be able to pay in instalments on something expensive. I think that since allot of dolls take some time to be produced that it's a great idea instead of paying up front and waiting .. But it also does feel good just to pay it of and not worry

6. Yeah, I did it's a good idea. Especially for limited dolls and such.
For me, I'd prefer to save all at once then order; but then I am a newbie and don't even have a doll yet!
But that's how I feel at the moment.

7. I prefer to just buy things straight-up. I like to know if I can truly afford a big purchase, which isn't so easy for me without having all the money there at once. But I can understand some people like it.

8. Never tried layaway. I want to but I worry I won't be able to make a payment or something happens and I lose my job. Stuff like that. I like being able to pay it off in one go and be done with the money side.

9. I prefer to pay things off in one lump sum. That being said, I do love layaway options. It is much easier to work a smaller chunk into the monthly budget for several months than it is to try to scrape together a full-sum for a doll.

It certainly does make the wait a bit easier for me, especially if they start your doll before the final payment!

10. Layaway is such a great thing. Being able to pay off little by little really helps in getting dolls. Yay for layaway :cheer

11. I have never tried layaway, it would be such a big burden for me >,< feels like I am in debt and might worried a lot...
But I heard most smart people use credit cards and do layaway on expensive items!

12. I never use layaway for my dolls because I find it enables me too much. It's hard to lay down € 700 or more for a doll in one go, it actually hurts. You feel the weight of the actual cost on your bank account. Not so much if you just pay € 140 a month for about 5 months, it seems so much less.

For me it's important that I understand the total value of the doll and this diminishes with a layaway. The price of a doll helps me to think twice about whether I really 'need' it or if I'm just 'wanting' something new. The dolls that I actually doubt about in the beginning but still purchase are usually the ones that stay the longest. Hence I usually pay everything up front, it's easy and secure for both parties involved.

13. Depends completely on the doll and it's price at the moment Layaway is a no no because I don't have a solid income, and the dolls I buy don't really hit past the £200 mark. But for some people I think it would be fantastic!

14. On one hand it's great! On the other I can see why some would stay away from it. Personally I've only bought from one compay and a dealer for that one company. All those times it was on layaway. I knew I'd have the money in the end to pay it off, but really the wait time didn't make much of a difference. The first doll I ordered was with a three month layaway plan. I waited an additional seven and a half months after paying before I recieved my doll. If I have the money and it's a fairly low price I'd probably stick with paying it all at once. If it's beyond a certain price, yeah I'd go with the layaway.

15. I tend to opt for Layaway, even though I usually have the money to drop all at once. I get paranoid about surprise expenses in my life (like, oops! car exploded! or something ridiculous..) and I just like to make sure that my account stays fairly well padded, in case of emergencies.

Paying a little at a time just gives me more peace of mind. =)

16. I think it's better to save up and being able to buy a doll with full payment, but lawaway are nice anyway. This is helpful for people who have a hard time to save up, or when you want a limited edition but you don't have the money at the moment. It's a great option to be able to get a doll at anytime but it should be used with caution.

17. I used layaway for my first purchase, it's a lot easier on my wallet then paying all at once. The distributor sends an email whenever the next payment is due and since I get emails through my phone, I never miss a payment. But I can see how it would be nerve wracking. If I didn't have a smart phone to keep track of such things I probably wouldn't use layaway.

18. I'd prefer to save up, but if its a company with good feedback on layaway I'd have no issues at all with choosing that option if need be. However if I were to buy a doll from a single person secondhand, or through some odd website, i'd likely just wait until I have the full amount ready.
Dont want to send a downpayment of like 100$ and then have them sell the doll underneath you; and then suddenly be out 100 bucks. :P

19. i used layaway for the first time with my tan pkf ante, only because i didn't know when they'd be offering tan again! i found it sort of stressful because we'd always be scrambling to make sure the money was in the account on the day it was supposed to be taken out. if you know you'll consistently have the money each month then it's a great option but i think i greatly prefer to save up the money myself and then pay in full.

20. I am using layaway with Iplehouse for the second time now. Without it I would not have gotten both Carina and Arvid and some clothes at the same time. I also like that in combining items the shipping is less. I am very glad they have it.
